Masato and Norifumi 'KID' Yamamoto Join Forces at 'Stands Up Japan'

TOKYO -- Japan's two most popular fighters, 2003 and 2008 K-1 WORLD MAX GP champion Masato and Japanese MMA legend Norifumi "KID" Yamamoto, joined forces on Saturday at the Roppongi Hills Arena to promote the "Stands Up Japan" charity fight event in aid of victims of the March 11 Japan earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster. Masato stepped away from the ring in his prime in 2009, but he returned on Saturday to face two formidable opponents in one day in Shoot Boxing super welterweight champion and 2006 S-cup champion Kenichi Ogata and All Japan karate champion Kazuya Yasuhiro. With "KID" unable to fight due to injury, Shooto legend and former pacific rim champion Rumina Sato stepped up to take on on Jin Hirano, an Iwate-based figher who lost his home and gym in the tsunami. Many other icons of the Japanese fight sport industry participated to support disaster victims, and MMA Fighting.com was ringside to capture the action.

The Top Ten Moves of Masato Yoshino

Once again, a huge shoutout to the crew at PWG. This video wasn't happening, otherwise. Closing out the traditional Jr. Heavyweights(there's still one left, but he's not quite what many would consider the usual Jr. Heavyweight) with a spectacular wrestler in Masato Yoshino. Yoshino got his start in the Toryumon gym, alongside some of his fellow top stars. Originally, his look was very different, with cut up shorts and long hair. He eventually joined the Italian Connection, and became YOSSINO. At this time, he began a slow rise up the ladder of the company, even taking CIMA to the limit in the 2003 El Numero Uno tournament. Later that year, he defeated K-Ness in a match infamous for the dislocating of K-Ness' arm. During the Dragon Gate exodus, Masato Yoshino really came into his own, joining the Blood Generation faction, and keeping a strangle hold on the Open the Brave Gate Title. He would be part of the original ROH excursion, and turned many heads during his stay there. That summer, he and Naruki Doi began tag teaming, and dominating the scene. They lost a shot at the ROH World Tag Team Titles, but continued to dominate the DG front. In 2007, they joined the Muscle Outlawz, and continued their dominance over the tag team scene, winning the IJ Tag Team Titles, the Open the Twin Gate Titles, and the GHC Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Titles, all the while with Yoshino holding the Open the Brave Gate Title, defending it against the likes of Susumu Yokosuka and El Generico.
