Performing April 3, 2011, 8 PM Meany Hall on the UW Campus Seattle, WA Founded in 1952, Los Munequitos de Matanzas has been touring and electrifying audiences around the world for more than 50 years. The ensemble's singers, dancers, and percussionists have delved deeply into all forms of Cuban music from its signature rumbas and "sons" to the stories, songs, and rituals that are its African roots. Los Munequitos de Matanzas last performed for the UW World Series in 1997-98. Their return visit is long overdue!

earthcds.com A full length performance of traditional and contemporary styles of Rumba Matancera by one of Cuba's most famous music and dance companies. On the morning of Saturday, March 2nd 2005, having overcome some problems with their transport the 24 strong group, Afrocuba de Matanzas, travelled from their home city to the Havana base of the Conjunto Folklorico Nacional de Cuba. Afrocuba had been invited to share the bill, with the national folkloric group, for one of the famous Rumba Saturdays hosted on the shaded patio of El Palenque. The Conjunto Folklorico was to play the first set, followed by Afrocuba. As the instruments were being set up a light rain began to fall. The musicians and dancers of the Conjunto decided that this was enough for them to cancel, causing some consternation. Afrocuba stepped up with their characteristic enthusiasm to say 'no problem, we'll do all of it then'. The rain soon stopped and what followed was a superb, full length performance of some of Afrocuba's greatest rumbas, presented here for the first time on DVD. Live at el Palenque presents performances of el yambu, el guaguanco, la columbia and batarumba. Includes a 20 page booklet with notes and background information on Cuban rumba. www.earthcds.com "La Fuerza del Tambor" offers a rare look inside the Matanzas Afro Cuban religious community, capturing a piece of history that is in danger of being lost. This DVD features public religious celebrations, drumming demonstrations, and interviews with elders of the Lucumí Santeria and Palo Mayombe traditions. Chapters include never-before-seen footage of a unique set of Lucumi bembe drums, called Bembe Macagua, and a rare sequence of Palo Mayombe songs played with bata drums. It also includes more traditional examples of the power of the drums to communicate with the African deities known as Orishas. The film was recorded live in the home of Alfredo Calvo, widely regarded as the most knowledgeable Santero and Palero in Matanzas. In addition to the eight segments of live public drumming celebrations and the two drumming demonstrations, Calvo and several other respected members of the Matanzas Afro Cuban community are interviewed on such topics as the relationship between Palo and the sacred bata drums and the birth of the Bembe Macagua drums. Subtitles are included for all of the Lucumí and Palo songs, many of which are no longer sung anywhere in Cuba except Matanzas. Interviews are in Spanish with English subtitles. The show consists of 4 songs: "Still a Young Man", "Walk him up the Stairs", "Rainmaker", and "Since I Fell for You." This was filmed at FBA marching festival at Fleming Island High School in which the band got and deserved ALL SUPERIORS!!! This was brought to you by Justin Adkins, your fellow lead trumpet. MUNEQUITOS DE MATANZA Vengo con Ire
ISAAC DELGADO y los MUNEQUITOS DE MATANZAS interpretan VENGO CON YRE. LOS MUNEQUITOS DE MATANZA son unos de los grupos de mayor renombre en la isla de Cuba. Se conocen en el mundo entero por sus giras a distintas partes de nuestro planeta. Este grupo realmente lo comenzaron en Matanzas varios aficionados que tocaban con palos y botellas cuando escuchaban el fenomenal grupo de Arsenio Rodríguez, mejor conocido como EL CIEGO MARAVILLOSO. Los aficionados se reunían en un bar del barrio La Marina, de Matanzas. El grupo interpreta mayormente los cantos africanos cuya raíz procede del Abacua (Efik/Efo) y otras variaciones de la religión Yoruba. El grupo viene dirigido por Diosdado Ramos Cruz, quien usa el quinto, el cajón, el bata, y otros instrumentos de percusión. Unos de los percusionistas mas famosos del grupo lo es el famoso Jesús Alfonso Miro.

El presunto autor intelectual de las matanzas de San Fernando, Tamaulipas, fue capturado sin un solo disparo. Martín Omar Estrada Luna, El Kilo, jefe de Los Zetas en ese poblado fronterizo, estaba en su guarida de Ciudad Victoria, en la colonia Vamos Tamaulipas del fraccionamiento Peregrinos, cuando un grupo de élite de la Secretaría de Marina lo sorprendió hacia las 6 de la mañana, cuando dormía. De entre sus 24 cómplices, detenidos dos días antes, surgieron las pistas del lugar donde se ocultaba. MILENIO constató que durante la detención de esta persona, a la que se vincula con la muerte al menos de 217 personas, de agosto de 2010 a la fecha, siempre mostró resistencia. Testigos del operativo cuentan que el 16 de abril, a las 6 de la mañana, las fuerzas especiales de la Marina llegaron al domicilio de la colonia Vamos Tamaulipas, sitio en el que se refugiaba El Kilo tras cometer sus fechorías. "Lo sorprendimos, no se lo esperaba. Estaba muy rejego con nosotros. Oponía resistencia con mucha fortaleza física. Durante el tiempo que duró la captura no se mostró dócil, pero afortunadamente no hubo balazos", expresaron con alivio. Su localización, relataron, se logró gracias a las declaraciones de 24 personas ligadas a esa agrupación delictiva. Sin embargo, para llegar a estos sospechosos fue vital la información proporcionada por agencias de México y la DEA. El golpe se consumó el 14 de abril.
