A short walk up Blue Hill Avenue from Mattapan Square, passing by several landmarks: first, Mattapan Station, the end of the Ashmont-Mattapan High Speed Rail (which connects Mattapan to the Boston subway system, or T); second, the "Rise" statues in Mattapan Square; third, Capitol Electric Supply Co. at 1601 Blue Hill Avenue, the former site of the Oriental Theatre (1929-1971); Simco's Hot Dog stand at 1509 Blue Hill Avenue; several major churches, including St. Angela Merici at 1548 Blue Hill Avenue, and Jubilee Christian Church at 1500 Blue Hill Avenue; the overpass above the commuter rail and (potential) future site of the Blue Hill Avenue commuter rail stop (just north of Simco's); and finally, the iconic sign on the side of Mattapan Car Wash and Quick Lube at 1480 Blue Hill Avenue, "Mattapan is Best."

On a cool November day, we take a trip on the MBTA Red Line out to Ashmont for a ride on the old PCC cars. These trolleys were built in the mid 1940's by Pullman-Standard and have been refurbished and repainted into the Boston Street Railway orange. They run on the 2.6 mile Mattapan-Ashmont "High Speed" line. As you can see, it does not go any faster than the regular subway if not slower. The Ashmont--Mattapan High Speed Line or also known as the "M-Line" in Boston and Milton, Massachusetts is considered to be part of the MBTA's Red Line, even though it uses different equipment (trolleys) and passengers have to change at Ashmont. The only MBTA line to run through a cemetery, the line opened on August 26, 1929. The term 'high speed line' is vestigial, as the route is neither characterized by a fully dedicated, grade separated right-of-way, nor by high-speed rolling stock.

A ride on the Mattapan-Ashmont branch of the mbta red line. This line still uses the old PCC trolleys for regular service, my favorite cars of the mbta and possibly anywhere. These cars are originally from the green line but haven't seen service there since the 1970s or maybe 80s. They have been restored numerous times including once recently with air conditioning added and they're not going anywhere any time soon but their long term future is uncertain. As far as I know this is also the only us rail line to go through a cemetery

Two of the MBTA's PCC cars on the refurbished "High Speed Line". These are the "Wartime" model PCC's; the MBTA's "Wartime" cars were built by Pullman-Standard in 1945-1946.The cars have all been upgraded with air conditioning (the white bulge on the roof), and were last rebuilt in 2005. The PCC, or President's Conference Committee car was designed by a design committee in 1929, in which many major electric railways were represented. The PCC car was designed to provide fast, reliable, comfortable service to compete for business with the growing bus lines. Prior to the PCC, there was no real standard design for subway cars or streetcars, as companies built their own design to meet their individual requirements. The PCC provided a standard, modern design, which could easily be integtrated into existing subway and streetcar systems. PCC's featured noise-reducing tires, smooth acceleration and braking due to improved control systems, a modern, streamlined design, and a comfortable ride for the time, although compared to Boston's state-of-the-art Type 8's, they are noisy, rough-riding, jerky and dated in design and accomidations. Boston purchased its first PCC in 1937 and ordered 20 more in 1941. Through the 1940's, 50's, 60's and early 70's, the PCC provided the backbone of the trolley fleet in Boston. PCC's were not completley phased out on the Green Line until 1986, when the combined Boeing-Vertol (now out of service) and Kinki-Sharyo Type 7 fleet took full charge of Green <b>...</b>
