Ralph McTell - Streets Of London

Have you seen the old man In the closed-down market Kicking up the paper, with his worn out shoes? In his eyes you see no pride And held loosely at his side Yesterday's paper telling yesterday's news So how can you tell me you're lonely, And say for you that the sun don't shine? Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London I'll show you something to make you change your mind Have you seen the old girl Who walks the streets of London Dirt in her hair and her clothes in rags? She's no time for talking, She just keeps right on walking Carrying her home in two carrier bags. In the all night cafe At a quarter past eleven, Same old man is sitting there on his own Looking at the world Over the rim of his tea-cup, Each tea last an hour Then he wanders home alone And have you seen the old man Outside the seaman's mission Memory fading with The medal ribbons that he wears. In our winter city, The rain cries a little pity For one more forgotten hero And a world that doesn't care

Ralph McTell - From Clare To Here

Lyrics There's four who share this room as we work hard for the craic And sleeping late on Sundays I never get to Mass (Chorus) It's a long way from Clare to here It's a long way from Clare to here It's a long, long way, it grows further by the day It's a long way from Clare to here When Friday comes around Terry's only into fighting My ma would like a letter home but I'm too tired for writing Chorus It almost breaks my heart when I think of Josephine I told her I'd be coming home with my pockets full of green Chorus And the only time I feel alright is when I'm into drinking It sort of eases the pain of it and levels out my thinking Chorus I sometimes hear a fiddle play or maybe it's a notion I dream I see white horses dance upon that other ocean Chorus It's a long, long way from Clare to here.

Ralph McTell - The Ferryman

Oh, the traveller moving on the land, behold I give you, I give you the travelling man. And he's very heavy laden with the questions in his burden. Lo, and I give you the travelling man. He has crossed the mountains, he has forded streams. He has spent a long time surviving on his dreams. Many times he's tried to lighten up his heavy load. But his compromises fail him and he ends back on the road. Oh the traveller he is weary, the travelling man he is tired. For the road is never ending in his fear he has cried aloud for a saviour And in vain for a teacher, someone to lighten up the load And he's heard the sounds of war in a gentle shower of rain And the whisperings of despair that he could not explain. The reason for his journey, or the reason it began Or was there any reason for the travelling man. At last he reached a river so beautiful and wide But the current was so strong he could not reach the other side And the weary travelling man looked for a ferryman strong enough to row against the tide, And the ferryman was old but he moved the boat so well, Or did the river move the boat? The traveller could not tell. Said the ferryman, "You're weary and the answers that you seek, Are in the singing river, listen humbly it will speak." Oh, the traveller closed his eyes and he listened and he heard Only the river murmuring and the beating of his heart. Then he heard the river laughing, and he heard the river crying And in it was the beauty and the sadness of the world And he ...

"BLIND WILLIE MCTELL" - Randy Brook (BOB DYLAN song) - "Coffee-House Songs #2"

--CLICK HERE OR "MORE INFO" FOR NOTES & LYRICS--- - (Copyright music and lyrics reproduced by kind permission of Special Rider -- for original, exclusive ‬ ‪performances by Bob Dylan, check-out the official channel at www.youtube.com/bobdylan ) - "Blind Willie McTell" is a song by Bob Dylan, titled after the blues singer Blind Willie McTell. It was recorded in 1983 but was left off Dylan's album "Infidels" and only officially released in 1991 on the "The Bootleg Series Volumes 1-3 (Rare & Unreleased) 1961-1991". - The melody is loosely based on "St. James Infirmary Blues"...a series of plaintive verses depicting allegorical scenes which reflect on the history of American music and slavery. When black-market bootleggers first released the outtakes from Infidels, the song became recognized as a composition equal in power and artistry to anything Dylan had ever done. - DYLAN - "I started playing it in my live shows because I heard the Band doing it. Most likely it was a demo, probably showing the musicians how it should go. It was never developed fully, I never got around to completing it. There wouldn't have been any other reason for leaving it off the record. It's like taking a painting by Monet or Picasso - goin' to his house and lookin' at a half-finished painting and grabbing it and selling it to people who are 'Picasso fans." blues mandolin - Dark Night Blues - Blind Willie McTell

A mandolin version of one of Blind Willie McTell's best songs. 'Nobody can sing the blues like Blind Willie McTell', said Bob Dylan. It's the kind thing that could be said about many blues originals, but you can guess what Dylan might mean. McTell's singing carries overtones - of wistfulness, of resignation, of cocky salaciousness - that distance him from a Son House or Blind Lemon Jefferson. This is the only song, recorded early in his career, that hints to the consequences of his blindness and it's full of strong and dark imagery. The mandolin accompaniment does not reflect McTell's 12-string playing but owes a lot to players like Yank Rachell, Johnny Young or contemporary musicians like Steve James or Rich DelGrosso. I'm playing a mandolin made by Daniel Brauchli, now living in Tasmania. H also made one of my lapslide guitars.

Ralph McTell - Streets Of London (Cover)

This is my rendition of Ralph McTell's Streets Of London. Here are some facts about the song....."Streets of London" is a song written by Ralph McTell. It was first recorded for McTell's 1969 album Spiral Staircase but was not released in the United Kingdom as a single until 1974. It was his greatest commercial success, reaching number two in the UK singles chart, at one point selling 90000 copies a day [1], winning him the Ivor Novello Award and a Silver disk for record sales. [2] The song was inspired by McTell's experiences busking and hitchhiking throughout Europe, especially in London and Paris; although the individual stories are taken from Parisians, London is chosen for its arguably more sonorous name. The song contrasts the common problems of everyday people with those of the homeless, lonely elderly, and ignored and forgotten members of society. McTell left the song off his debut album, as he regarded it as too depressing, and did not record it until persuaded by his producer Gus Dudgeon, for his second album in 1969. A re-recorded version charted in the Netherlands in April 1972, notching up to #9 the next month.[3] McTell re-recorded it again for the UK single release in 1974. McTell played the song in clawhammer style with an AABA chord progression.[4] Over two hundred artists have made covers of this song [5] including Cliff Richard, Blackmore's Night, Mary Hopkin, Sinéad O'Connor, Schooner Fare, Anti-Nowhere League and Roger Whittaker. Blind Willie McTell - Searching The Desert For The Blues

You may search the ocean, you might go 'cross the deep blue sea But Mama, you'll never find another hot shot like me I followed my baby from the station to the train And the blues came down like night and showered me I left her at the station wringing her hands and crying I told her she had a home, just as long as I had mine I've got two women, and you can't tell them apart I've got one in my bossom, and one I got in my heart The one in my bossom, she's in Tennessee And the one in my heart, don't even give a darn for me I used to say a married woman was the sweetest thing that ever been born But I've changed that thing, you better leave married women alone Take my advice: let these married women be 'Cause their husbands'll grab you, beat you ragged as a cedar tree When a woman say she love you 'bout good as she do herself, I don't pay her no attention, tell that same line to somebody else I really don't believe no woman in the whole round world do right, act like an angel in the daytime, mess by the ditch at night I'm going, pretty mama, please don't break this rule; that's why I'm searching these deserts for the blues I'm going, pretty mama, searching these deserts now That's why I'm walking my baby home anyhow Lord, oh Lord Lordy, Lordy, Lord Oh Lordy Lord Lord, Lord, Lord When a woman say she love you 'bout good as she do herself, I don't pay her no attention, tell that same line to somebody else Lord, Lord Lord, Lord, Lord
