Meaningful Play: Getting Gamification Right
Google Tech Talk January 24, 2011 Presented by Sebastian Deterding ABSTRACT Foursquare, GetGlue, Nike+, Badgeville: From reading news to fulfilling your hearts' desires, more and more "gameified" applications and "gamification" vendors doll out points and badges to users, promising anything from increased user engagement and retention to plain mind control. While some hold that adding such game elements to non-game applications opens a new decade of design, others criticize current implementations as shallow "pointsification" and overselling of a new digital snake oil. What lessons do games really offer for user experience design? Which criticisms are valid? And what can designers interested in "gameifying" an application do to steer clear of the worst pitfalls? In this talk, researcher and designer Sebastian Deterding provides an overview of the current gamification movement, its most troubling blind spots, the motivational powers of games, and how to design for a playful experience that is truly meaningful to its users. Sebastian Deterding - Sebastian Deterding is a user experience designer and game researcher at the University of Hamburg, Germany, where he currently pursues a PhD on the motivational psychology of gameified applications. Abdur Raheem Green - Meaningful Mankind, The Purpose of Life
Abdur Rahim Green talks about the purpose of life under the topic "Meaningful Mankind, The Islamic Definition". Born in Dar-es-salaam in Tanzania to British parents, Green's father (born in England), Gavin Green, was a colonial administrator in the then extant British Empire. At an early age he moved back to the UK with his parents. His mother is of original Polish origin. At the age of 10 he attended a Roman Catholic Monastic boarding school at Gilling Castle and then went onto Ampleforth College and went on to study history in the London University. However, he left his education unfinished in an effort to devote himself to Islamic works. He became dissatisfied with Christianity at the age of 8, with it not making sense to him. Green researched and practiced many religions, including Buddhism (for 3 years) before embracing Islam. Whilst in Britain his father got a job in 1976 working for Barclays Bank International and was subsequently sent to Cairo, Egypt, to set up a branch of the Bank there. His study of the Noble Qur'an immediately attracted him to Islam and he embraced Islam in 1988. He has been a Daw'ah practitioner in Britain since then. Green now works in the London Central Mosque and Islamic Cultural Centre as the Visits and English Dawa Co-ordinator. Green is seen akin to lecturers such as Dr. Zakir Naik, Dr. Bilal Philips, Khalid Yasin and Yvonne Ridley, doing many lectures on Islam worldwide and also in London's famous Hyde Park, Speakers Corner.

In Search of Meaningful Work
In Search of Meaningful Work, part of the series "Inspiring West Virginians," profiles a couple who run a world-renowned research and medical clinic that treats genetic disorders in Old Order Amish and Mennonite children. D. Holmes Morton, MD, a pediatrician from Fayetteville, and Caroline Morton, from Beckley, founded the Clinic for Special Children about 21 years ago in Strasburg, Pa., after Holmes visited Amish families who had several children with debilitating genetic disorders. The physician/scientist model for the clinic - a place which includes home visits, on-site research and testing, and practicing close to the patients - is based on Caroline Morton's experience of the Raleigh County coal camps where her grandfather practiced for over 50 years, and her father's work as a family physician in Beckley, treating patients from birth to death. Holmes Morton overcame daunting hurdles as a high school drop-out to find "meaningful work," as he calls it. Morton's work in understanding Glutaric Aciduria Type 1 has led to preventive treatments. The screening programs developed in the clinic are now used for all newborns in Pennsylvania and in many other parts of the United States. DIY Gift Idea
Hey Everybody! This video is a little different. One of my new years resolutions is to get crafty. It's fun and helps me to relax. I think one of the best gifts to give somebody is a mug. It's useful because we drink everyday and if its a personalized one- it means it is going to be one of a kind. It's sedimental and can be meaningful. You don't have to be an artist to paint your own mug. It's all about the thought that counts. You can draw/write ANYTHING on the mug. Just enjoy the process. I started off using a Children's Tea Set from Toys R Us. Cost 6.99 (was on offer too wakaka). I bought my own mugs (6 mugs for 2.99) so what does this tell you? It's cheap to paint your own mugs!! It's so much more meaningful too! So this is just a suggestion. Obviously if you want to seriously get into it and make it into a hobby- you can buy your own actual porcelain paint like me (I have yet to try tehehe). The most meaningful element of a trip is "people", who give tourists their most lasting memories, and it is friendly interpersonal relations that make Taiwan a unique destination for tourists from all over the world. The Tourism Bureau invited director Johnason Lo, who has won international Promax, iF Design, and red-dot awards, and Michael Fimognari, a well-known photographer with two Emmy awards to his credit, to help produce the film, "Time for Taiwan—My Beautiful Island". The film takes a completely different perspective, and focuses primarily on interpersonal relations at their most unique. The film is designed in a way that escapes the constraints of a rigid government promotional film, and also abandons the old fashioned style of a drama or a scenic-spot-oriented film. The images in the film are seen through eyes of four groups of tourists and through their stories in Taiwan, which show vividly the excitement and discovery they experience during their journey. A trip can produce in tourists valuable memories and a desire to come again.
