MEDEA www.japansociety.org Shizuoka Performing Arts Center (SPAC) Greek masterpiece re-interpreted & directed by Satoshi Miyagi Friday, September 23, 7:30 PM — *followed by a members only MetLife Meet-the-Artists Reception Saturday, September 24, 7:30 PM Sunday, September 25, 5 PM Satoshi Miyagi, celebrated Artistic Director of SPAC and successor to the legendary director Tadashi Suzuki, transforms the Greek masterpiece Medea into a play-within-a-play set in a late 19th-century traditional Japanese restaurant where male members of the establishment call upon the female waitresses for entertainment. Performed to live musical accompaniment, Miyagi's Medea is a visual feast comparable to a kabuki play. With his signature bunraku puppet theater -inspired style that utilizes two actors per role--one to speak and one to move--Miyagi reveals Euripides' poignant story through the lens of Japan's imperialist and male-dominated Meiji era. New Yorkers will finally be introduced to this stunning and internationally acclaimed production, which has traveled to 20 cities and 11 countries since its premiere in 1999. Medea Benjamin, US Boat to Gaza Passenger

Passenger Medea Benjamin talks about why she is going aboard the US Boat to Gaza with the Stay Human Flotilla at the end of the month. Bio: Medea Benjamin is a cofounder of both CODEPINK and the international human rights organization Global Exchange. She has been an advocate for social justice for more than 30 years. Described as "one of America's most committed — and most effective — fighters for human rights" by New York Newsday, and called "one of the high profile leaders of the peace movement" by the Los Angeles Times, Medea was one of 1000 exemplary women from 140 countries nominated to receive the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the millions of women who do the essential work of peace worldwide. In 2010 she received the Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace Prize from the Fellowship of Reconciliation. Since the September 11, 2001 tragedy, Medea has been working to promote a US foreign policy that would respect human rights and gain us allies instead of contributing to violence and undermining our international reputation. She has traveled and written extensively about Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Egypt, Israel and Palestine. She has led five delegations to Gaza, bringing humanitarian aid. A former economist and nutritionist with the United Nations and World Health Organization, Benjamin is the author/editor of eight books. Her articles appear regularly in outlets such as The Huffington Post, CommonDreams, Alternet, TruthOut, the Daily Kos and OpEd News.

Maria Callas as Medea 01

This is a slide show made with photographs of Maria Callas as Cherubini's Medea, one of her greatest roles. The photos are from Alexis Minotis's production, performed in Dallas (1958), London (1959), Epidaurus (1961) and Milan (1961 & 1962), where Jon Vickers was Giasone. The sound-track is from the studio recording made in 1957, with the Chorus and Orchestra of Teatro alla Scala, directed by Tullio Serafin. Giasone is sung by Mirto Picchi. The pictures were chosen according to the text sung. If you like it, search for my other videos. This is Medea's entrance on act I. A guard commander announces to the King Creonte that a strange veiled woman is at the palace gates. When she enters and Creonte asks her "Chi sei tu?" (Who are you?), she unveils herself and answers: "Io? Medea!" The Argonauts want to chase her away immediately, but the chorus prefers to fly, for to stay there means disaster.

Medea, Jason and the Golden Fleece

Medea is a woman in Greek mythology. She was the daughter of King Aeëtes of Colchis and later wife to the hero Jason. Jason fled after obtaining the golden fleece, taking Medea with him. Medea bore Jason two children before Jason forsook her in order to marry the daughter of Creon, the king of Corinth. Medea got revenge for Jason's desertion by killing the new bride with a poisoned robe and crown which burned the flesh from her body; King Creon died as well when he tried to embrace his dying daughter. Medea fled Corinth in a chariot, drawn by winged dragons, which belonged to her grandfather Helios. She took with her the bodies of her two children, whom she had murdered in order to give Jason further pain. Occupy Wall Street, Medea Benjamin Interview, Zuccotti Park, New York, NY, September 26, 2011

www.hotindienews.com Occupy Wall Street Day 10, The Resistance Continues At Liberty Square By James Lane What/Who is Occupy Wall Street? Occupy Wall Street is a leaderless resistance movement with people of many colors, genders and political persuasions. The one thing they all have in common is that they share the mantra "We Are The 99%" that will no longer tolerate the greed and corruption of the 1%. The original call for this occupation was published by Adbusters in July; since then, many individuals across the country have stepped up to organize this event, such as the people of the NYC General Assembly and US Day of Rage. There'll also be similar occupations in the near future such as October2011 in Freedom Plaza, Washington DC Since the 17th of September, they've had thousands of supporters flood into lower Manhattan, set up beds, kitchens, peaceful barricades and occupy Wall Street and appear to be committed to stay until our policies change. Similar to recent activist movements in Egypt, Greece, Spain, and Iceland, they plan to use the revolutionary Arab Spring tactic of mass occupation to restore democracy in America. The use of nonviolence to achieve their ends and maximize the safety of all participants is strongly encourage despite what may have been recently reported by some corporate major media outlets. This country was founded in protest and changes to it's history and policies were created by movements such as this. Progressives in this country hope to see ...

Children of Dune - Alia's Medea

DISCLAIMER: Nothing except the video itself is mine. I don't own Children of Dune or anything to do with it (except for a copy of the DVD, of course) and the song isn't mine, either. "My Medea" belongs to the brilliant artist, Vienna Teng, and Children of Dune belongs to Frank Herbert, etc. Not mine, don't sue, you get the idea. And I'd be much obliged if this video stays up. LYRICS: Inside the labyrinth walls There lies a tiny child who sleeps alone And as the daylight falls The wind becomes so wild across the stone For I have made her prison be Her every step away from me And this child I would destroy If you tried to set her free So come to me my love I'll tap into your strength and drain it dry Can never have enough For you I'd burn the length and breadth of sky For it's my thoughts that bind me here It's this love that I most fear And this child I would destroy For I hold her pain most dear No haven for this heart No shelter for this child in mazes lost Heaven keep us apart A curse for every mile of ocean crossed For I must die for what I've done A twist of fate a desert sun For I see what I destroy Sweet reflection knife into me For I see what I destroy I can see what I've begun Okay, after about the 3rd time of all the gazillion times I've listened to this song, it struck me that it fit Alia's story very well. I'm not a HUGE fan of Dune, though it is a brilliant series and I do like it (it's like LotR for scfi people, lol), but once I get a good idea in my head ...

Medea Centaur Theater Andreas Apergis

Medea's monstrous magic still compelling to me Toula Foscolos October 18, 2010 "Who calls a play about how a woman exacts revenge on her husband by murdering their two children, their 'all-time favourite play?'"exclaimed media relations wiz-woman, Janis Kirshner, when I expressed my overwhelming joy at the news that Euripides' Medea was being staged by Skapegoat Carnivale Theatre and being performed at the Centaur starting this Thursday, October 21. It's really hard for me to explain my love for Medea, without sounding like a conceited, self-indulgent lover of classical Greek literature, but three years of Latin and Ancient Greek Studies (in Greece, no less) took care of that for me. I've studied them all, and Medea is, by far, the one that touches my heart the most. In a nutshell, the plot of Medea revolves around the emotional fallout occurring when the hero Jason leaves his wife Medea for King Kreon's daughter. Now exiled by the King, Medea has one day to plot her revenge against Jason, undertaking one of the most gruesome acts of revenge in history. Medea is filled with dark machinations, political upheavals and tragedy. Yes, it's all about how a scorned woman exacts revenge on her cheating husband by committing the most atrocious of acts, but it's about so much more. It's about exerting power in a world that allows women none, it's about a life reduced to nothing because you have sacrificed everything to one man who ultimately betrays you, it's about hurting the man ...

In the recitative and in her first aria, Medea appeals to Giasone to remember all that she sacrificed for him in the past. In the ensuing duet (see my next video), Medea will pass from supplication to threat.

Peter Ward: The Medea Hypothesis

press.princeton.edu Will we extend life into space before a catastrophe stops us permanently? Those going into space will be impelled by an exploratory urge. But their choices will have epochal consequences. Once the threshold is crossed when there is a self-sustaining level of life in space, then lifes long-range future will be secure irrespective of any of the risks on Earth (with the single exception of the catastrophic destruction of space itself). Will this happen before our technical civilisation disintegrates, leaving this as a might-have-been? Will the self-sustaining space communities be established before a catastrophe sets back the prospect of any such enterprise, perhaps foreclosing it for ever? We live at what could be a defining moment for the cosmos, not just for our Earth. The colonization of space is an evolutionary step similar to the colonization of land This would be as epochal an evolutionary transition as that which led to land-based life on Earth. But it could still be just the beginning of cosmic evolution. The enormous potential of future life is dependent on our actions today The first aquatic creatures crawled onto dry land in the Silurian era, more than three hundred million years ago. They may have been unprepossessing brutes, but had they been clobbered, the evolution of land-based fauna would have been jeopardised. Likewise, the post-human potential is so immense that not even the most misanthropic amongst us would countenance its being ...
