You already knew that Ken has no heart, now we find out that he has no brain, either! That's right, Ken can stop his brainwaves on demand. Actually—and in a more serious vein—this is the famous EEG machine recording where Ken enters various meditative states, one of which is a type of "thoughtless," "image-less," or "formless" state, whose correlate is that his brainwaves come to an almost complete stop, as clearly recorded on this portable electroencephalograph (EEG) machine. (This video is discussed in One Taste, April 10 entry.) We asked Ken to do a short 10-minute commentary on these various meditative states and the corresponding brain-wave patterns that are shown on the EEG machine in the video. Ken enters four meditative states (nirvikalpa closed eyes, nirvikalpa open eyes, sahaj, and mantra-savikalpa), each of which has a very distinctive brain-wave pattern. In his commentary, Ken emphasizes that the patterns shown on this machine may or may not be typical, but they do emphasize that profound consciousness states can be evoked at will, and these show immediate correlation in brain-wave patterns. Most forms of Buddhism distinguish between two classes of meditation practices, shamatha and vipassana, both of which are necessary for attaining enlightenment. The former consists of practices aimed at developing the ability to focus the attention single-pointedly; the latter includes practices aimed at developing insight and wisdom through seeing the true nature of reality. The differentiation between the two types of meditation practices is not always clear cut, which is made obvious when studying practices such as Anapanasati which could be said to start off as a shamatha practice but that goes through a number of stages and ends up as a vipassana practice. Theravada Buddhism emphasizes the meditative development of mindfulness (sati, see for example the Satipatthana Sutta) and concentration (samadhi, see kammatthana), as part of the Noble Eightfold Path, in the pursuit of Nibbana (Nirvana). Traditional popular meditation subjects include the breath (anapana) and loving-kindness (mettā). Recently while in Paris, sitting on the banks of the river Seine near Notre Dame I noticed this mesmerizing reflection on the surface of the water. With a wonderful composition of minimal music by Kevin MacLeod I offer you this video for meditation or relaxation. It was six in the morning, just before Paris was fully awake as I sat watching this wonderful reflection in constant motion, never repeating the same pattern. I thought about the thousands of years that this river has flowed by this very spot and never once shown the viewer the same reflection. I am fascinated by the chance and serendipitous encounters we make on our journey through life. This is not a computer generated image but a real reflection on a real river. I filmed this image from the banks of the river Seine in Paris. The equipment I use for creating my videos is a Canon 5d Mark2 camera with a EF 16-35mm 2.8 L II USM Lens, a EF 70-200mm 2.8 L IS USM Lens and a EF 24-70mm L USM Lens set on a Manfrotto Tripod. I record onto a SanDisk Extreme Pro 32gb Flashcard and all of this is stored in a Lowepro Flipside 400AW. I then edit on a MacBook Pro with several iomega 1tb hard drives.
