Oh! Señorita -- Foxtrot Cantado (Ch.Maduro) -- Raquel Meller, Odeon ca 1929 NOTE: Raquel MELLER - Spanish actress and singer, b. 1888 in Barcelona as Francisca Marqués López. She started performing on stage at an early age, and was mostly a "cuple singer" (couplets). Couplets were, basically, naughty songs and Raquel was considered to have been the best. Artists such as Charlie Chaplin and Sarah Bernhart considered Raquel Meller to have been genius. She performed extensively in the United States under contract for the Schuberts, and performances broke box office records at the time. She was popular enough to make the cover of Time magazine (April 26, 1926). Raquel Meller became a movie actress in 1919 with her first performance on film in "La Gitana Blanca". She would ultimately perform in less than a dozen movies but is still considered one of the most gifted Spanish performers of all time. As an actress, Raquel Meller performed in the following films, most of which have been lost: La Gitana blanca and Los Arlequines de seda y oro (1919) Les Opprimés (1923), Violettes impériales (1924), La Terre promise (1925), La Ronde de nuit (1925), Carmen (1926), Nocturne (1927), La Venenosa (1928), Violettes impériales (1932). Raquel Meller passed away on July 26, 1962.

The hands-on one-dayer is the latest addition to our programme of events at our Plymouth Canteen in Royal William Yard. Gill, together with Hugh, head of events Steven Lamb and guests road tested the new course to make sure it lived up to our own high standards. Thom, from the Channel 4 programme Hugh's Three Hungry Boys, will be hosting the course from April 24 onwards.
