Paris--Fashion is never just about physical clothes: it's the manner that physical clothes conceal the human body and reveal the clothed body to others. A great fashion show is one that evokes our emotions, one that provokes and questions our consensus and our ideals. More importantly, fashion is an emotional reaction to how the clothes look and feel on oneself and on others. For anyone who has followed Riccardo Tisci's work on menswear since his debut show in July 2008, the opening look--a long sleeved black shirt and shorts with bull dog prints, worn with opaque tights and leather high tops--has a ring of familiarity. They remind us of the black wool jacket, leather shorts, black knee tights and sneakers from back then. This silhouette and others--a chocolate knee length coat, leather vest worn with brown shorts, leggings and camel leather sneakers, a brown beaver short coat with dark brown shorts and lace up thigh high leather sneakers--are now Givenchy men's signature looks. In street talk, Mr. Tisci owned them. As he becomes more confident with menswear, Mr. Tisci is able to bring more of an emotional charge to his shows. He used the most diverse mix of models so far seen at any of the shows in Paris. This casting has now become an essential ingredient in how the message of the clothes is seen. An invitation to Le déjeuner sur l'herbe at Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana's Metropol Theater arrived in a brown paper bag. The catwalk was grass; the backdrop was leafy trees; home movies of picnicking families played on the video wall. Gee, what could the theme of the D&G show possibly be? It's been an intense week for the duo, with the 20th-anniversary celebrations of their signature men's collection (never mind the months of planning), and there must have been many moments when life's simplest pleasures seemed mighty tempting indeed. Fortunately for them, they have their second line to express such feelings. The collection was a hymn not only to simple pleasures but also to simpler times. Domenico and Stefano built it on the check fabric called Vichy, from the French town known for its production of cottons. It looks like every folksy napkin or tablecloth you've ever seen, and they used it for blousons, shirts, shorts, shoes, and the trim on collars and cuffs—just about anything, in fact, that could carry a pattern. It was positively invigorating. Then the designers riffed on an equally nostalgic motif: the tropical print. Pair a Hawaiian shirt with cotton drill shorts and you've got a look that says "out of office" more succinctly than any automatic e-mail message. That will hardly win them awards for innovation, but it goes a long way to serving a fundamental function of Spring fashion. The concept of the remix has been at the heart of pop culture for years, but Giorgio Armani invoked it today to describe a collection that consolidated the designer's classics with an updated twist here and there. Ease has been an Armani calling card since he first arrived on the fashion stage nearly four decades ago, and here it was made even easier. The show opened with a very serious coat contradicted by gray flannel trousers cut like track pants, and closed with a group of evening clothes in black velvet that were casual enough to make the transition from red carpet to gym. (You can imagine Armani's young Hollywood acolytes enjoying that notion.) The designer's ability to knock the stuffing out of the conventional remains untainted by time. A black leather top peeked out from under a windowpane-checked jacket, a double-breasted jacket was as soft as a cashmere cardigan, and the stripe down a trouser leg could have equally connoted tuxedo or, again, tracksuit. He's adapted his silhouette—trousers were slightly pegged; jackets were shorter, with a dropped lapel—and he continued with the longer coats that were a hit at Emporio the other day. But the lush monochrome of Armani's palette—this time, every shade of gray, from elephant to dove—is an enduring staple. Likewise the wry humor, here expressed in a sarong printed with one of his most famous publicity shots. You don't think he's laughing?
