A lot of people judge mental illness based on outward appearance. I think this is an unfair stereotype. Not all people with mental illness are lazy about their looks, and what you look like on the outside doesn't necessarily reflect what's going on inside your head!

Dr. Hyla Cass: First Do No Harm - Green Mental Health

Psychiatrist Hyla Cass says most psychiatrists simply label patients mentally ill based solely on symptoms and put them on dangerous and addictive drugs, instead of doing complete physical examinations to find and treat underlying medical conditions which can manifest as psychiatric symptoms. There are numerous non-harmful medical solutions that patients are not being offered. She also discusses the severe withdrawal effects of psychiatric drugs and what patients need to know about safely getting off of these drugs under a doctor's supervision.

Mental health care in America -- A Tragic story.

It seems like every week there is a story about someone with mental illness being miss-treated, prescribed incorrect medication, treated with indifference or ignored (in some cases to death) by the very places they went to for help. There was Esmin Green who died at Brooklyn's Kings County Hospital after sitting for nearly 24 hours she collapsed from her chair and slowly died on June 19 2008. She laid on the floor at the Brooklyn hospital for an hour before a nurse finally checked her pulse. After an autopsy and weeks of tests, the medical examiner's office concluded Friday that Green was killed by pulmonary thromboemboli, blood clots that form in the legs and travel through the bloodstream to the lungs. (Ignored to death?) Then there was 50-year-old Steven Sabock A mental patient died after workers at a North Carolina hospital left him in a chair for 22 hours without feeding him or helping him use the bathroom. Surveillance video showed hospital staff watching television and playing cards just a few feet away. (Ignored to death?) And then in 2001 there was Patience Lucas she went to ECMC (Erie County Medical Center) for help and was treated with apathy and indifference to her condition. Minutes after "treatment" she was dead. We love her and miss her.

Mental Hospital: Conditions and Treatments for Patients - History in the 1950s (1953)

DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org Psychiatric hospitals, also known as mental hospitals, are hospitals specializing in the treatment of serious mental disorders. Psychiatric hospitals vary widely in their size & grading. Some hospitals may specialise only in short-term or outpatient therapy for low-risk patients. Others may specialise in the temporary or permanent care of residents who, as a result of a psychological disorder, require routine assistance, treatment, or a specialised and controlled environment. Patients are often admitted on a voluntary basis, but involuntary commitment is practiced when an individual may pose a significant danger to themselves or others. Modern psychiatric hospitals evolved from, and eventually replaced the older lunatic asylums. The development of the modern psychiatric hospital is also the story of the rise of organised, institutional psychiatry. While there were earlier institutions that housed the 'insane' the arrival of institutionalisation as a solution to the problem of madness was very much an event of the nineteenth century. To illustrate this with one regional example, in England at the beginning of the nineteenth century there were, perhaps, a few thousand 'lunatics' housed in a variety of disparate institutions but by 1900 that figure had grown to about 100000. That this growth coincided with the growth of alienism, later known as psychiatry, as a medical specialism is not coincidental. The treatment of inmates in early ...

"Can" Documentary Film Trailer

This is the trailer to a 56-min documentary film "Can" which follows 37-year-old Vietnamese-American Can Truong's journey of healing from depression and bipolar disorder over a three-and-half year period. One of the first documentaries that focuses on an Asian American family dealing with a mental illness, it offers an intimate glimpse into Can and his family. They were among the million or more Vietnamese boat people who fled the communist regime of Vietnam in the late 70's in overcrowded, unwieldy boats, enduring life-threatening perils in search of freedom. Like many Asian fathers with traditional Confucian ethics, Can's father invested his hopes and dreams into his only son and fled to the US so that Can could become educated in the USA Can was a model student, excelling in many subjects and attending the University of Chicago in 1993 as a pre-med student. At the prestigious university, he was first diagnosed with his mental illnesses and was forced to drop out due to his debilitating condition. Over a 12-year period, Can was hospitalized 6 times, tried more than 20 different medications, entered several clinical drug trials, and underwent 15 electroconvulsive shock treatments.

Exposed Bipolar/PTSD Phenomena

Exposed: BiPolar & PTSD Phenomena This video is dedicated to ALL who suffer from BiPolar 1, BiPolar 2, PTSD & any Mental Illness. Dedication is also given to any supporter of a loved one who suffers. The intent is to inform and begin your journey of educating yourself if desired to better understand. The World Health Organization (WHO) study "Global Burden of Disease for 2004", neuropsychiatric conditions, together with organ disorders, accounted for 31% of the causes of disability among workers. Depression, which is a neuropsychiatric condition, ranked highest among the causes of disability for workers. Other mental conditions like alcohol use disorder, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and drug use disorder also ranked high in the list. *Most African Americans with bipolar disorder are going undiagnosed and untreated based upon cultural beliefs which vary from others. Several factors have contributed to African Americans not receiving help for bipolar disorder and other mental illnesses. Some of the reasons are: •A mistrust of health professionals, based in part on historically higher-than-average institutionalization of African Americans with mental illness; and on previous mistreatments, like such tragic events as the Tuskegee syphilis study. •Cultural barriers between many doctors and their patients. •Reliance on family and religious community, rather than mental health professionals, during times of emotional distress. •A tendency to ...
