Reno Air Race Preparation -- A Merlin Engine Inspection
In preparation for the 2011 Reno Air Races, Stu takes Merlin's Magic to Hollister for an engine inspection. Stu let's the folks of Air Sparrow Merlin Service know with a smile, "It's running really nice, don't %$# it up." I ask if it's okay to shoot video of the inspection, "it's not every day you get to see a Merlin up close." In unison I hear, "Yes it is" and go ahead. I learned about "Merlin blood" or oil, I learned about ADI, and I learned about the need for a positive gear-up locking mechanism. What a day! Beautiful sounds coming from two P-51Ds in Southern California. It must be the configuration of the the exhaust headers, but the P-51 has the best sound of all the Rolls-Royce-Merlin-engined aircraft, in my opinion!

This is a rover engine (similiar to the Merlin) just prior to installing on the street rod frame. All accesories are in place. Really nothing original left. I even removed the factory waterpump. I needed the output shaft to power accessories. Water pumps are now two stainless pedestal pumps, The power steering pump is a custom counter rotation unit and the alternator is from Summit Racing. The magnetos are gone replaced by dual ELECTROMOTIVE racing units. There is a crank trigger on the crankshaft. The intake on the front is an oil cooler I built from shaped sheet metal. Obviously, two holleys feed my custom manifold. The engine is hooked up to an Allison B400 6-speed automatic through a Caterpillar3208 housing. I am using a truck style DELCO starter located on the housing. Obviously no starter on the front anymore as I replaced it with typical automotive accessories.

Merlin (Meteor) Engine Powered Street Rod
This is a v12 Meteor engine from a British tank in a street rod. The engine is very similar to the Merlin engine that powered Mustangs and Spitfires except there is no supercharger. Unlike most of the "airplane engine" in cars you see, this Meteor was re-engineered to look like an old American street rod. I replaced the magnetos with direct fire units , the carbs with Holleys, and replaced the front water pump with modern accessories. This is the first test drive (April 20, 2011). Sounds really good hoever we still have body work to complete. This is what happens when good old British engineering meets Yankee "engine-uity"!!! Hope you enjoy the video. By the way there are two radiators, one stock 4-core 32 Ford style on the front and another one in the rear with cooling fans. By the way the steam you see at the very end of the video was due to inadequately filling the cooling system. With radiators front and rear the system needs to be basically filled from both ends. Since this video we have driven it on the street and no cooling issues at all. We will post a new vides in Dec 2012. The body is coming along nicely. ..John

Recorded some few weeks ago at my hometown during an old cars show. It was just mere luck to have gone there and seen it. How wrong I was at first when I thought it was just for static display! It´s the frist time ever in my life that I have the chance of seeing and hearing a real Rolls Royce Merlin engine just before my nose! It´s powerful roar left my ears buzzing for the rest of the day! After all, I had it just two or three meters before me! I guess they used a small propeller with shorter blades for safety reasons.

In 2002, I was out at the pylons at the Reno Championship Air Races and captured some Great Warbird footage. I viewed it once but never posted it. I ran across it again over my 2010 Christmas vacation and decided to edit the video and share the experience. Normally I shoot on a tripod, but I had to go handheld because the planes were just too close and fast to follow. Plus, from right to left, the follow is greater than 180 degrees. I used a broadcast quality shotgun microphone - the sound quality is simply the best! My old Sony VX-2000 is an SD (standard definition) camera, and the video was cropped for widescreen. Wish I had the HD back then. I'll post more clips as time permits, such as the Gold race that was shot from pylon 3. Steve Kauzlarich
