I keep hearing about Ethel Merman's original Broadway Version, but couldn't find it on YouTube so I'm posting the audio. (I've created a repeating video montage of some of Merman's photos, for visual interest). Here is a beautiful song by legendary singer and actress Ethel Merman. Ethel Merman (born Ethel Agnes Zimmermann, 1908 -- 1984) was a American actress of stage and film musicals, well known for her powerful voice, often hailed by critics as "The Grande Dame of the Broadway stage". Merman was known for her powerful, belting mezzo-soprano voice, precise enunciation, and pitch. Because stage singers performed without microphones when she began singing professionally, she had great advantages in show business, despite the fact that she never received any singing lessons. Merman began singing while working as a secretary for the BK Booster (automobile) Vacuum Brake Company in Queens. She eventually became a full time vaudeville performer and played the pinnacle of vaudeville, the Palace Theatre in New York City. She had already been engaged for "Girl Crazy", a musical with songs by George and Ira Gershwin, which also starred a very young Ginger Rogers (19 years old) in 1930. Although third billed, her rendition of "I Got Rhythm" in the show was popular, and by the late 1930's, she had become the first lady of the Broadway musical stage. Many consider her the leading Broadway musical performer of the Twentieth century, with her signature song being "There's No Business Like Show Business" (from "Annie Get Your Gun"). The Merman Medley
In the early 1950s, Ethel Merman began singing a special arrangement of a dozen or so of the classic showtunes she introduced on Broadway. Roger Edens provided the "Lady with a Song" introductory verse. This 1960 performance is updated to include "Small World" from Merman's current show, "Gypsy." For technical reasons, Merman was required to lip-synch the medley for TV instead of singing live. However, this ten-minute traversal of "Ethel's Greatest Hits" does offer a sense of the performer's legendary onstage electricity.

This is Ethel Merman's roof-blowing-off "Blow Gabriel Blow" from the one-off Broadway concert with Mary Martin in 1977. Cleaned from the LP, which was only given to donors with a large donation. There is a technical flaw that can not be repaired in one song, very audible when you clean the tape or LP, which may be one reason they haven't issued this, or of course the clearances. This is Ethel Merman singing "World Take Me Back" live, cleaned and edited from two performances for best sound when she played it on Broadway. "World" was one of two songs that Jerry Herman wrote for her and cut when she refused the part originally. Putting them back in was part of the deal of her taking over the show, the only time she did that in her career. She did record both, but in mono with nothing but piano accompaniment and hearing the full orchestra is really something. There is likely never going to be any issue of her performance, which apparently only exists in audience recordings and maybe one stage recording that was badly marred by the ramp used (off mike as it were). Pity. With the several versions that were recorded, I'm sure there's some story there why Merman's wasn't, probably a money dispute. She certainly sang it better than any of the other Broadway Dollys.
