Winner, UWA III 2011 & Jury prize of Machinima Expo 2011- This machinima is a metaphorical tale, questioning relationships established between reality and virtuality through our avatars and the play on the double meaning of the word 'avatar' refering to its original Sanskrit meaning of a spiritual quest. The Metaverse is our collective online shared space, created by the convergence of virtually enhanced physical reality and physically persistent virtual space, including the sum of all virtual worlds, augmented reality, and the internet. The word metaverse is a portmanteau of the prefix "meta" (meaning "beyond") and "universe". The term was coined in Neal Stephenson's 1992 science fiction novel Snow Crash, where humans, as avatars, interact with each other and software agents, in a three-dimensional space that uses the metaphor of the real world. Stephenson coined the term to describe a virtual reality-based successor to the Internet.Concepts similar to the Metaverse have appeared under a variety of names in the cyberpunk genre of fiction as far back as 1981 (in the novella True Names). Founding members are Maximillian Nakamura (SL name) aka Shintaro Miyazaki (Berlin), Miulew Takahe (SL) aka Björn Eriksson (Stockholm), Bingo Onomatopoeia (SL) (Regensburg), Hars Hefferman (SL) aka Harold Schellinx (Paris), Vit Latynina (SL) (Regensburg), Paco Mariani (SL) (Regensburg) and Frans Peterman (SL) (Amsterdam). Virtual Travel Metaverse
The MTG developed a streaming web service for sonifying virtual environment and a "Soundscape Generation" application for assist and fast sound design. The video presents the Virtual Island use case created inside the Metaverse1 project (www.metaverse1.org). The use case concerns the sonification of three real locations in the city of Las Palmas (Canary Island, Spain). As a final prototype of the Metaverse1 project, a virtual model of the city was designed and is currently available for visiting in Second Life. The virtual world representation is aimed in promoting tourist information of the Island. The sound enhance the realistic dimension of the simulation. For recreating the real location, the MTG elaborated an acoustic schema of the environment, categorizing sounds as events and ambience type. Events were recorded as monaural sounds, in order to be able to apply in real time the spatialization. The Ambiance were recorded using omni-directional microphone. The design is performed with the "Soundscape Generation" application written in SuperCollider. MTG releases the libraries and documentation of the application. You can use it in your sound design. California High Speed Rail: A Metaverse Vision
This is Avatrian's proposal for RailLA.org's call for design ideas to revitalize downtown Los Angeles. The goal is to integrate the neighborhoods around Union station with the arrival of the high speed train in LA. The machinima showcases various concepts, real world implementations and original designs. We used a virtual world platform in order to implement our ideas in a manner wherein it can be communicated effectively. 3D content were designed and built as needed in the specific scenes presented. This work has been possible due to the diligence of Avatrian's creative team of 3D modelers, graphic artists, digital film makers and project managers. We also sought out specific advise from professional city planners, style editors and audio specialists. The work has been happily collaborative.

Shintaro Miyazaki aka Maximillian Nakamura (SL name) played with avatar orchestra fellows in SL a mixed reality concerts at wien modern 2007 (24th of November). www.avatarorchestra.org composer: Andreas Müller (aka bingo onomatopia) The Onomatophone was created out of the idea to build an instrument with rean 3-dimensional sound. The result is an instrumnt that separates the control-interface from the sound-generation: six spheres sending out audio fly right through the audience, thus giving everybody a unique, continuously changing mix. WNK is not only a song I made for AOM but also a proof of concept that loop-based/rhythm-oriented music can be arranged/performed/mixed live in SL. Hence the dance/Drum'nBass loops. I simply wanted to see if they play back in sync in laggy live situations. These drum-loops are taken from the web or were freebies from synthesizer magazines; of course I processed them and did not use them unedited. The other loops were (like the rest of the samples used here) created from my library of field-recordings: There are, for examples the heating of a flat I once lived in for a while, a metal lid covering the public water-systems at the place we go to for flying kites and riding sleigh, the mouse-clicks of my old Atari and so on. Technically, it as a project for learning the coding of LSL (Linden Scrpting Language), I had to create an interface controlling the sounds as well as the movements of the spheres - plus visual feedback for the audience <b>...</b>

The University of Texas at Dallas Arts & Technology (ATEC) Island in Second Life will host an opening of its new art gallery, The Metaverse Gallery and Performance Space. This is the first major art space developed by a university in Second Life, and it is all designed and built by ATEC and Computer Science graduate students in the Online Worlds Lab. The show features Shoshana Epsilon, an artist who takes photos in Second Life of avatars, 3D representations of people in the game-like world.
