I recently completed shooting a music video in this space, which has become a local hot-spot for urban explorers and photographers. More than once while I was at the church, myself and fellow crew members were showered upon with loose bricks pushed down by pigeons, of all things. City Methodist is a very dangerous place, but even through the decay, it retains much of its beauty.

Ukena and Dupes lift Baker past Martin Methodist, 1-0 DECATUR, Ala. -- The 13th-seeded Baker women's soccer team is headed back to the NAIA final round of eight after knocking off Martin Methodist University, 1-0 for the second consecutive season in the 2011 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship. In a game that saw rain, wind, and snow, the Baker women never flinched. The Wildcats took a 0-0 tie into the break after being outshot by the Red Hawks 4-3. Goalkeeper Maggie Dupes made two key saves on point blank chances by Mor Efraim, but the momentum never seemed to shift. "I told the girls at halftime that this would be a game they would remember for the rest of their lives," said assistant coach Davy Phillips. "I thought the work rate was good in the first half and we needed to find some support off of Alix Schiraldi, and that's exactly what happened." In the 63rd minute Alix Schiraldi broke free from two defenders and sent a ball in deep to a streaking Ashley Ukena, who finished with a strike into the left side of the net to give Baker the 1-0 lead. Heading down the stretch, Maggie Dupes stole the show making three more key saves, one of which came in the final 50 seconds on a shot that deflected off Dupes and hit the crossbar before Skylar Baker cleared the ball for a Baker victory. Abandoned City Methodist Church in Gary, Indiana - June 2010. Urban exploration
The city of Gary, Indiana was founded as a booming steel city as the twentieth century passed, and areas downtown saw the construction of several impressive buildings during these prosperous early years. In 1925, a cornerstone ceremony took place at 577 Washington St. to commemorate the construction of a Gothic Revival church called City Methodist. It was completed 21 months later, at the cost of one million dollars - $385000 of which was contributed by the United States Steel Corp. (which also founded the city). Elbert Gary, the chairman of US Steel and origin of the city's name, donated a Skinner organ as well. The Bedford limestone structure consisted of a 50-foot tall sanctuary nave and elaborate stonework, and was able to seat 950 worshipers; City Methodist had a congregation of nearly 3000 members in its heyday. The building was also home to Seaman Hall - a 1000 seat auditorium, and a gymnasium with a full size basketball court. Storefronts were built into the building, with hopes that the income would offset the enormous maintenance costs. During the 1920s, Pastor William Seaman rallied against the power of the Ku Klux Klan in Indiana, and welcomed black worshipers into City Methodist during a time when African Americans were not permitted in "white churches." Gary entered a downward spiral during the 1960s, like many other industrial cities during the period.
