Yankale

This film considers the case of Jakob L (Yankale), a lowly civil servant who fails to turn up to work one day. We get to know more about him, his life, his childhood, and above all his relationship with his oppressive mother. His childhood is portrayed as a peaceful island, where time and formalities do not exist. The contrast between the square shapes of the office world and the rounded, organic forms of the sea and the island emphasize the conflict between our desires and our duties. This film won eight prizes at international film festivals. Trim Time

The film tells the story of a tree that during the course of the year receives a rather radical pruning of its foliage. In the course of this simple story we go through the four seasons of the year; The transfer from season to season is accentuated by the music, as well as by the change of colors from silent grays of the winter to vivid green in the summer. The comic effect in the film is achieved by the contrast between the lazy and sleepy character of the tree and the active and jumpy character of the barber. Igor Stravinsky - Duo Concertante, IV-V

Duo Concertante, for violin & piano (1932) I. Cantilène II. Eglogue I III. Eglogue II IV. Gigue V. Dithyrambe Dora Bratchkova, violin Andreas Meyer-Hermann, piano Stravinsky was introduced to American violinist Samuel Dushkin in 1931 by Willy Strecker of the publishing firm Schott, Mainz. The Violin Concerto in D was the first product to result from this relationship, and Dushkin performed the Concerto in numerous countries with the composer conducting. The two toured as recitalists in 1932-34, and Stravinsky early on saw the need for one of his own works to be part of the concert program. Until this time he had not written an appropriate piece, apparently because of an antipathy toward the combination of violin and piano. The Duo concertant received its first performance in October 1932 in Berlin, and became a regular feature on Dushkin and Stravinsky's recital programs. In addition, Stravinsky made several arrangements for violin and piano of earlier works, such as the Divertimento and the Suite italianne. Stravinsky gave the five movements of the Duo concertant titles that evoke musical forms and idioms of the past. Rapid repeated notes on the piano and an aggressive violin part characterize the opening of the Cantilène, which is cast in ABA form. The central section features furious violin double stops. The two Eglogue movements evoke the pastoral nature of the traditional eclogue. Eglogue I opens with a drone on the violin, and some of the ensuing violin parts are ...

Jason Rhoades at ART UNLIMITED, BASEL 2011

WAM-webartmagazine.com presents a clip on Jason Rhoades (1965 - 2006). Common to Jason Rhoades's practice is an underlying interest in the conditions in which art is made and the subversion of any conversations that stand in the way of its production. Up to his untimely death in 2006 at 41. he carried our a continuous assault on aesthetic conventions and rules governing the at world. Made up of 96 neon lights hanging from the ceinling, this work was originally par of the artist's seminal installation My Madinah: in pursuit if my ermitage... Following its initial installation in 2004 Rhoades grouped together individual components to create unique artworks that each reflect a specific aspect of the overall project. My Madinah forms part of the artist's Pussy Trilogy (including Meccartuna, 2003, and Black Pussy, 2005 / 06. Together the three projects constitutes a complex investigation of contemporary manifestations of religion, cultire, sexuality ad consumerism, and were inspired in part by the collectove trauma caused by 9 / 11. The multi-colored neon words in this work belong ot Rhoades's larger porject of creating a cross-cultural compendium of synonyms for female genitalia. While Medinah is a reference to the holy city of medina in Saudi Arabia, its english pronunciations presents a further play on this research experiment by loosely rhyming with "vagina". As Eva meyer-Hermann notes, "the whole installation becomes a satirically exaggerated cult space. where spiritual ...
