Far, far from each other Matthew Arnold (1822 -- 1888) Far, far from each other our spirits have flown, And what heart knows another? Ah! Who knows his own? Blow, ye winds! Lift me with you! I come to the wild. Fold closely, O nature! Thine arms round thy child. Ah, calm me! Restore me and dry up my tears. On thy high mountain platforms, where morn first appears. II. Where is it that our soul doth go? Heinrich Heine (1797 -- 1856), trans. KF Kroeker One thing I'd know, When we have perished, Where is it that our soul doth go? Where, where is the fire, that is extinguished? Where is the wind? Where is the wind but now did blow? Where is it? Where is it? Where is it that our soul doth go? When we have perished. III. Music, when soft voices die Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792 -- 1822) Music, when soft voices die, Vibrates in the memory. Odours, when sweet violets sicken, Live within the sense they quicken. Malena Ernman (Mezzo-Soprano) Vocal Range 3.5 octaves {C3-F6}

The prodigious vocal range of Swedish mezzo-soprano Malena Ernman, a singer whose vocalism I admire. Her voice has the richness of a contralto but her upper register is free like that of a soprano, and she has natural agility. She is versatile enough to sing both opera and pop. Given her range, agility and versatility, I consider her a true Soprano Sfogato.

Max Emanuel Cencic: HAENDEL « Mezzo-soprano », airs d'opéras. mp4

O you, the Evening Star, the star of woe on high, Your beam is silvering the distant withered plains, And both the dreamy bay, and murky rocky chains. I love your vague glow there in the heavenly height; And all my sleepy thoughts were woken by your light. I do remember you, o star how you were rising, Above the peaceful land where everything was pleasing, Where slender poplars raised their crowns above the dales, Where tender myrtles slept and cypress in dark veils, Where in the middle of day the songs of waves were haunting. Long time ago when I was there upon the mountain Above the sea I dragged my thoughtful laziness, When all the huts were drowned into the sleepiness, A maid who looked for you into the darkness came And to her lady friends she called you by her name." by Aleksandr Sergeyevich Pushkin

"A Charm" by Benjamin Britten, sung by Sarah Connolly (mezzo-soprano)

Superb British mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly, accompanied by pianist Eugene Asti, sings "A Charm" text by Thomas Randolph, one of five songs from Benjamin Britten's "A Charm of Lullabies", a range of takes on the subject of night's arrival and the need for sleep. The setting of Randolph's "A Charm" is anything but soothing; it fusses for quiet even as it subverts it. From a recital at Wigmore Hall, London, 8 March 2010. She also performed "A Charm" at a recital in Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Centre, New York on 14 April 2011. For the New York Times review of that recital, see: goo.gl "A Charm Quiet! Sleep! or I will make Erinnys whip thee with a snake, And cruel Rhadamanthus take Thy body to the boiling lake, Where fire and brimstones never slake; Thy heart shall burn, thy head shall ache, And ev'ry joint about thee quake; And therefor dare not yet to wake! Quiet, sleep! Quiet, sleep! Quiet! Quiet! Sleep! or thou shalt see The horrid hags of Tartary, Whose tresses ugly serpants be, And Cerberus shall bark at thee, And all the Furies that are three The worst is called Tisiphone, Shall lash thee to eternity; And therefor sleep thou peacefully Quiet, sleep! Quiet, sleep! Quiet!" Photo: Julieta Cervantes , New York Times
