Michael Giles (from King Crimson) - Progress

Michael Giles is an English drummer, best known as a co-founder of King Crimson in 1969. Prior to the formation of Crimson, he also co-founded the short-lived Giles, Giles & Fripp with his brother, Peter, and Robert Fripp the previous year. Giles left the King Crimson in December 1969, though he played as a session musician on the band's second album, In The Wake Of Poseidon. He joined Ian McDonald to record an album called McDonald and Giles, which was much lighter in style than King Crimson, but just as challenging musically. Giles then worked as a session musician for the duration of the 1970s, working with many popular artists including Leo Sayer, Steve Winwood, and Yvonne Elliman. A solo album, Progress, was recorded at his home studio in 1978, but wasn't released until 2003. He continues to work as a session musician.

The Contortionist by Michael Giles

The magician takes two cards from a regular deck, one of them being the queen. He proceeds by telling the audience about the circus and all the side shows, particularly about "The CONTORTIONIST." With the queen representing the flexible little dynamo, he begins to fold the two cards and demonstrates. Placing the queen behind the other card and in a crisscross pattern, he zigzags the top half of the queen from the bottom. After the spectators put their tongues back in their mouths, he restores the queen back together again. The magician clearly shows this to be the case. He shows both sides of the cards to prove that only two cards are being used. Having no mercy for his audience, the magician folds the two cards (the queen lengthwise and the odd card width-wise) so that only the backs of the cards are seen. The queen is nestled inside the fold of the odd card. He then pushes the folded queen through the odd card and the queen turns face-up, still folded (in a "Card-Warp" fashion). Knowing that there may be magicians in the crowd, the magician opens the folded cards. Leaving them in an unfolded and crisscross pattern, he then proceeds to push the face-up queen under the face-down card, causing half of the face-up queen to turn face-down. Impossible? He proves this to be true by tearing the queen in half and showing half to be face-up and the other half to be facedown. The best part is while the audience is bowing to the magician, he repeats this effect with only the torn ...

Suite No.1 - Giles, Giles and Fripp

This track is from The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles & Fripp: it's an album recorded in 1968 by Robert Fripp, Peter Giles and Michael Giles. It's a very good album, though it's not very well known (to my knowledge). For more infos: www.elephant-talk.com (sorry, but the audio quality is not very good)

Is She Waiting? - McDonald & Giles

The third track from Ian McDonald and Michael Giles 1971 album McDonald & Giles. Fresh from King Crimson, McDonald and Giles got together to record this single album before going there separate ways. Giles brought in his brother Peter Giles to play bass but most other instruments are handled by McDonald and Giles themselves (Steve Winwood and Michael Blakesley make short appearances on other tracks). Unlike the dark and majestic work of King Crimson, McDonald & Giles is much folksier and lighter, yet maintaning much of the proggy and jazzy elements, especially the flowing drumming of Giles and moving saxophones, mellotrons and flutes of McDonald that was essential to early Crimson. This particular track, while not an absolute highlight of the album (if you ask me that is) is a rather pretty and moody acoustic ditty credited entirely to McDonald. Lyrics: Is she waiting Is the ashtray by the bed Beside her Is she waiting With the book that's never read I need to know she knows I'm on my way home Curtains closed I'm back on the road Is she lonely Painting pictures of the sea To show me In the morning She'll be there and I will be Beside her is the place I know I should be See her face Shine smiling at me Is she sleeping Half awake to hear the door At sunrise Is she waiting Just to be with me once more I know she is

Epitaph - King Crimson

"Epitaph" (Fripp, McDonald, Lake, Giles, Sinfield). From their debut studio album "In the Court of the Crimson King", 10/October/1969. * Robert Fripp -- Guitar * Ian McDonald -- flute, clarinet, saxophone, vibes, keyboards, mellotron, vocals * Greg Lake -- bass guitar, lead vocals * Michael Giles -- drums, percussion, vocals * Peter Sinfield -- lyrics, illumination * Barry Godber -- cover illustrations. Lyrics: The wall on which the prophets wrote Is cracking at the seams. Upon the instruments of death The sunlight brightly gleams. When every man is torn apart With nightmares and with dreams, Will no one lay the laurel wreath When silence drowns the screams. Confusion will be my epitaph. As I crawl a cracked and broken path If we make it we can all sit back and laugh. But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying, Yes I fear tomorrow I'll be crying. Between the iron gates of fate, The seeds of time were sown, And watered by the deeds of those Who know and who are known; Knowledge is a deadly friend If no one sets the rules. The fate of all mankind I see Is in the hands of fools. Confusion will be my epitaph. As I crawl a cracked and broken path If we make it we can all sit back and laugh. But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying, Yes I fear tomorrow I'll be crying. (including "March for No Reason" and "Tomorrow and Tomorrow"). ============================================= I do not own King Crimson. High in the hawthorne tree Bee and butterfly Seek fortune in the leaves Under the sky. Follow the road that winds up to the sky, There's no reason do not wonder why. Dappled green summer glades Where swallows fly And laughing children play Under the sky. Follow the road that winds up to the sky, There's no reason do not wonder why. King Crimson - Epitaph
