One of the most underused, under-appreciated appliances in any kitchen is the Microwave. Most people think it's used for just warming things up, and occasionally defrosting meat and poultry, but it can actually do far more than just that. For today's video, I'm gonna show you one of those uses: making apple sauce. To start, take a few apples and peel them. Once they are clean, slice the apples into very thin pieces. Take the pieces and put them in a microwaveable safe bowl. Wrap the bowl in plastic wrap and pop it in the microwave (the wrapping doesn't have to be perfect). With most types of microwaves it takes about two minutes to cook. If the apples look soft enough to puree, you'll know it's finished. Then simply put the now mushy apples into a blender, add any additional ingredients (cinnamon is very common add-in), and blend. Now you have ready to serve apple sauce, courtesy of your microwave. This is an experiment that I devised to help visualize where the hot spots are inside of a microwave oven. I came across some thermal paper yesterday and decided to put it to use. The microwaves inside of a microwave oven are electromagnetic waves and are reflected inside the oven. These waves interact with each other and form interference patterns that result in areas that are intense and areas that have essentially zero microwave energy. The thermal paper forms a thermograph of the interference pattern. I performed the experiment three times, once with the thermal paper at the bottom of the oven, once with it two inches above the bottom, and once with it on the carousel.
