The „Last Sunday" -- erroneously called „THAT Last Sunday" -- was composed by Jerzy Petersburski in 1936. It is a nostalgic tango with lyrics by Zenon Friedwald describing the final meeting of former lovers who are parting. The Polish title was "To Ostatnia Niedziela" ("The Last Sunday"). The song was extremely popular and was performed by numerous artists (best kown performance by Mieczysław Folg). Along the way, it first gained the nick-name of "Suicide Tango" due to its sad lyric (although, the real „suicie song" in the night restaurants of Eastern Europe -- where the shoot in the brow at 12 at night was not any unusual happening - was In 1930s another sad „Sunday": the „Gloomy Sunday" (in Polish: „Smutna niedziela") by a Hungarian composer Rezső Seress. (Soon, an international hit; in the US sung by Billie Holiday). But this Polish „Last Sunday" song also had a terribly sad fate. During World War II In the concentrations camps it was often played while Jewish prisoners were led to the gas chambers and ovens, to be executed. Mieczysław Fogg revealed once that he had recorded as much as one thousand of sides before the war; it is quite probable when we add his recordings as a soloist to those recorded still with his vocal Mother-ensamble -- Chór Dana. Fogg, being a famous soloist in thirties, whenever only was able, was joining his 'singing colleagues' to make tours or to record new songs and this recording of our present tango may be a good example for such an action. Fogg, as a soloist with orchestra, has been already presented by Grzegorz 240252, whereas my proposal refers to the four-voices approach with a delicate accompaniment and 'Pan Mieczysław' on the first plan. Czy ty pamiętasz? (Do You Remember?) Fox-rumba z filmu "Wonder Bar" (Warren/ Lipski) - Mieczysław Fogg & Ork. Syrena Rekord, Syrena-Electro 1935 NOTE: This is one more tribute to Jerome David Saliger, a great American writer who died in Cornish, New Hapmshire on the 27th January, 2010. In autumn/winter 1937-38, as a 18 year old boy, he happened to be on a few months practice in the City Slaughterhouse in my home town of Bydgoszcz, Poland. It was so much against his emerging young writer's personality and his feelings - these hogs and pigs slaughtered in front of his eyes - however, he surrendered to the decision of his father, Solomon Salinger, the owner of a big ham & cheese export-import in New York. So, this movie is my reminding of the city Bydgoszcz as it used to look to the eyes of young visitor from New York City, in the Fall of 1937. And this lovely fox-rumba from a fashionable American movie "Wonder Bar" was, perhaps, played by some band in a main street cafe, when Jerome was just passing by? This tango was one of greatest Mieczysław Fogg's hits before 1939. The titla translates as: My Loved One. Photos show the streets of pre war Warsaw confronted - on the last shot - with what remained of it after the Warsaw Uprising in August- October 1944. The total demolishion of the city - which was the revenge on the rebellious city taken by Adolf Hitler in one of his last crazy orders - was obediently and systematically fulfilled in the last months of the WWII by Wehrmacht soldiers & the Einsatzgruppen SS: house after house, and street after street... While the Red Armny stood and waited on the other bank of Vistula River, until the ashes of the capital of the country they were planning to incorporate into the USSR, will cool down.

Not only tango, as a kind of popular music was in fashion in Poland in pre-war times; modern rhythms of jazzy origin arrived in the country on Vistula river as a storm wave -- in 30's most popular were foxtrots. A special sub-kind, if I can called it that way , were foxtrots with "Russian air", mostly composed by Russian musicians living for many reasons outside their home country. "Tańcz Maszka, tańcz !" (Dance Mashka, dance) was composed by Oskar Strock and gained great popularity in Poland; present recording was made in Polish by M. This blues from 1932 Polish movie "Biała trucizna" (The White Poison) is one of the most beautiful tunes composed in Poland during the inter-war period. The composer Władysław Dan was also a founder of the most popular in pre-war Poland revelers group "Chór Dana". Mieczysław Fogg was a member of it, though he also took care on his career as one of two-three most popular Polish soloist in the record business as well as a stage performer. The third great person who contributed to the popularity of the movie was the performer of the main role, Stefan Jaracz - a real giant in the history of the Polish XX century theatre. The melanchiolic text of the song, written (under the pseudonym Oldlen) by a poet Julian Tuwim, is the complaint of the abandoned lover, who - without much hope -tries to bring the dead love back to life, with this melody. Very quickly, the tango gained enormous popularity: Yet in these days nothing was possibly so current like the title "I'll Be Back, My Love". For many Polish families deprived of their fathers, brothers, sons or Polish women waiting in vain for months for their husbands, fiances to give the least sign of life, this song was symbolising all their pain and all hope. Played in cafes or by pavement musicians or circulating as hand written sheet notes it became one of the main tunes in occupied Warsaw. Germans however, having at last realised the spiritual significance of this tune for Poles, had banned its public performances on territory of Poland, what only increased popularity of this song. Epizod na maskaradzie (Episode at a Masquerade), Op. 14 (1908, unfinished; completed by Grzegorz Fitelberg in 1913) The last symphonic poem by Polish composer Mieczysław Karłowicz (1876-1909). The content of the programme is uncertain. According to certain sources, the tone poem depicts an encounter between former lovers at a boisterous, hectic masked ball; others have suggested that the work is based on Ivan Turgenev's short story "Three Meetings", in which the narrator meets a woman who is very disturbed by the sight of a former lover at a ball. Grzegorz Fitelberg (1879-1953), the composer and conductor who completed the piece which was left unfinished at Karłowicz's death, believed that the key to the programme of the symphonic poem lies in a fragment of text found in Karłowicz's sketch: "SHE (aloud): I do not know you ... Mieczysław Karłowicz (1876-1909) Symphonic poem "Sorrowful Tale" or "Sad Story" ("Smutna opowieść"), op. 13 (1908) The piece is illustrating the thoughts going through the mind of a suicidal person. He is depressed and tired with life, but the happy memories keep coming back, causing the emotional struggle. Unfortunately the will of life fails and the hero kills himself... For some music historians this piece was supposedly one of the proofs, that the composer's untimely death in Tatra mountains (an avalanche) was in fact a suicide. However the theory is very unlikely, according to his close friends and family, and has been proven wrong by his fellow mountainers. Today it is mostly assumed, that the piece was inspired by death of a writer and a friend of Karłowicz family - Józefat Nowiński (author of the play "The White Dove", to which the composer wrote a musical prologue entitled "Bianca da Molena"). Mieczysław Karłowicz (11 December 1876 -- 8 February 1909) was a Polish composer and conductor. He was born in Vishneva (present-day Belarus) into a noble family being part of the Clan of Ostoja. His father Jan was a Polish linguist, lexicographer and musician amateur. As a child he studied the violin, for which instrument he later wrote his only concerto.Karłowicz studied at Warsaw with Prof. Noskowski, Piotr Maszynski, and Gustaw Roguski. He later studied in Berlin with Heinrich Urban. From 1906 to 1907 he studied conducting with Arthur Nikisch. His music is of a late-romantic/fin-de-siècle character, showing some affinity with Richard Strauss, Alexander Scriabin, Gustav Mahler, Arnold Schönberg and Jean Sibelius. Karłowicz wrote a symphony (Revival), a violin concerto (in A major, opus 8) and his output also contains several tone poems, including Eternal Songs, Stanislaw and Anna Oswiecimowie and The Returning Waves.
