Mike Martello Tribute

Here is a short montage Dana put together for our fallen friend and teacher Mike Martello who passed away at age 42, 9:30 this AM (June 2) in Belgium. Safe journey brother, and save me one of the good seats next to you. We love you. Jake & Dana
Playful Qin Na by Mike Martello Laoshi

My teacher and friend Mike Martello Laoshi, 05.10.1966 - 02.06.2009. He was a very generous, warm hearted, wise and honest person, also a Martial Arts Prodigy. I met him in 2006 and he convinced me that white people can be top notch at Kung Fu. But then again, he was more Chinese than many Chinese. Thank you Laoshi, for those inspiring years. You changed my life.

Practical Practice - Part I

Rou Shou, Push Hands, Yuejia Sanshou and Fun... Some basic practical ideas with my students for Rou Shou, Push Hands and Basic Shuia ideas... Again, these ideas here are very raw in approach and energy, as I am refining via the practical practices. I use my students in a raw approach so they can get the basic foundations of the ideas and connected flow of the two people, by simple transmission through the playing. I allow them to use power and force if they catch me then great, its a learning process after all... I use my students as training partners (not students with no skill) and as myself practicing ideas so i can learn deeper of the internal mechanisms and connections. What looks subtle, soft and flowery is nothing of the kind. I am around 5ft1 and 135 lbs, I cannot use power to do what I show, its logistics, size and strength, all which I just don't have... Here is a great comment, translated from a chinese forum... "Good, it really shows how Taiji can make the small overcome the strong. In the first clip, the foreign students use physical force, dumb strength against their teacher. They have not grasped Taiji's usage of smart power; their waists and upperbodies are too stiff, they don't have twisting and turning, their centers move along with their strength, once their teacher dissolves their power they will immediately lose their balance. They have not yet understand the theory of the necessity of having both Yin and Yang, upward and downward powers, left and ...
Warm-up Talk Video Part II - 15 Minutes

Okay why this, Part II? I have been getting many e-mails and questions about my stretch vids... Many like them, Thanks more to come, and many think they are, well, to aggressive or violent as one said, and that I am bouncing and I should not be stretching that way because I will get hurt, it should be gentle and relaxing and yadda yadda blah blah... I made it smaller so its not so long to watch.... For more info: mikes-vid@wutang.be ------ Excerpt from DVD and Book to come --------- .......Martial Warming Up and Stretching....... As a martial artist "athletic warm-ups" are good to fit into your training but do not have the foundations that are needed to your martial goals (ie martial warming up). Cross training is beneficial but it should also fit your goals of training, for example; a runner doing warm-ups does not do weight lifters warm-ups or a martial artist doing warm-ups does not do tennis warm-ups. Although the end result of a warm-up should be the same, to raise your core body temperature to get your blood flowing and body warm, the means of the warm-up should reflect in what foundations you are building. Your goals in these early stages should be to build; subtleness, flexibility, pliability, resilience, springiness, strength and endurance conditioning into your martial arts growth. As a martial artist over time you should extend your knowledge beyond your style and begin to research and understand physical fitness training and body mechanics. Many athletic and ...

Master Zhang is currently a 6th-dan(level) Wushu Coach and Chief Instructor of the Beijing People's Martial Arts Association. He is known for his excellent methods of building martial power and superb fighting skills. Taiji Fan

I learned this form living in Taiwan many moons ago, my teachers teach styles just a bit different than Mainland. So if my form is not standard, well who cares, I enjoy the rooting verses fluffy... I use Johnny Cash as background musac, because I am so tired of the fan music. Back then it was for warmup, you played taiji fan, 24 form, 37 form, 108, roushou and taiji dancing... Back then I didn't realize that Taiji dancing was good, I saw it as, well dancing to say the least. Really it was and is good for relaxed moving the joints but not empty, as all Taiji should be, full and connected, soft and hard and yadda yadda... Well to say the least I want to show there is a connected soft side to what I do.... Enjoy.. I hope all enjoy objectively... mike martello www.wutang.be

Thanks to Jake Bourrohs for hosting this seminar on Tanglang, Qigong, PaiDa, Qinna, Body Awarenesses, Ke Shou Kao Da and other aspects of CMA... Besides the partnering is loads of fun.... Just watch Jake!! LOL what a laugh we had.... I hope all can enjoy objectively! www.wutang.be

Bagua Xiao Kai Men Zhang

I made this small vid one day after watching many vids here about Bagua (good and bad). I could not help to feel sadden by the state of what many peoples perception of TCMA/IMA are these days. And surely what I do and percive TCMA/IMA is subjective and open for comment.... Forms are forms and should not be the end all to what we are learning. Xiao Kai Men, which literally means "small opening form", begins by teaching linear and square body movements first, which later stages turn circular and smooth. After the smoothness and basic ideas are understood, we re-apply the linear and square moves to circles and walking the circle... As a baby first steps are in a line first so must we to see clearly how to turn effectively... I talk about theory and ideas on training in levels and stages and what to look for in each... I also demo linear only stages.... Ba Gua is a martial art that employs subtle movement, explosive power and a unique form of maneuvering. I hope all enjoy objectively... mike martello

Qigong Class 101

Swimming dragon and eight brocades basics. These basics introduce students into what is qigong about... Basic qigong should be about using the mind, body and energy together for total body usage, it should cover stretching and engaging muslces and tendons (basic strength and connected softness). I tell my students think of it as,`get to know your body qigong` then later we can explore the more esoteric ideas... I hope all enjoy objectively.
Ba Gua 八卦- Da Dao

Competition video from circa 1990's. The large Sword is a fairly heavy blade, about 10 lbs. The form is to build whole body connection for weapon usage. The large sword should circle around the body and look light and playful. And yes that is Jose Figiorolo, in red.

Miao Dao 苗刀- Grain Leaf Saber (long form)

The Miao Dao, Grain Leaf Sword, combines the fighting features of broadsword and spear. Its handle can be held with one hand or with two hands, while held in one hand it can attack distant targets. When held in two hands, both the arms and the waist can be applied with full force. The movements of the Miao Dao are fluent yet compact, with the body supplying power to the weapon, while the waist steers the blade in its motions. An attack is always wrapped inside a defensive technique, while a defensive movement immediately transforms into an attack. Its interlinking movements and rapid evading footwork makes the Miao Dao wielder an unpredictable foe. I hope all can enjoy objectively.

Pushhands, Roushou Practice and fun... Some basic practical ideas and listen skills with my students for push hands and roushou ideas... These ideas here are very raw in approach and energy, as I am refining myself via the practical practice. I use my students in a raw approach so they can get the basic foundations of the ideas and connected flow of the two people, by simple transmission through the playing. German Seminar 2005 Yue Jia - QinNa

A seminar in 2005 for a combat Hapkido School in Germany. A one day intensive on body control, mechanics of alignments, body usage, stretching, and finally basics to Yue family style QinNa... The seminar was to help enhance the ideas of Hapkido locking and throwing controls, through inner connections and alignments, of CMA. You will see the size of the German students compared to my small frame. I had a load of fun and was a good test for myself due to the large size of the students, I could not use strength to overcome them, which was the fun part of letting the soft internal controls overcome there strength and size. The day was a success for them and me, and we ate traditional German food and drank Big Beers afterwards!! Thanks to Master Gregor Huss for hosting this event.
