This show aired several months before Mike Smith had that terrible accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down. Tragedy Mike Smith died in 2008. By Tom Law The ashen and dirt-specked face of Mike Smith told the story of the day as the Racing Hall of Fame rider made what seemed like an eternal walk from the Churchill Downs main track back toward the paddock shortly after he finished second aboard Zenyatta in the $4545000 Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) on Saturday. Smith was greeted by encouraging cheers from fans that were still lined up along the paddock. The calls were mostly positive, ranging from "we still love you Mike," to "great ride, Mike," to "pick your chin up." Despite the positive words from the fans, Smith took all the blame for the loss on Zenyatta, officially a head decision to Blame. "It hurts more than you ... than I can explain, just because it was my fault," Smith said, choking back tears in a post-race press conference. "She should have won, and it hurts." Zenyatta was last through the homestretch the first time, around the clubhouse turn, and up the most of the backstretch, racing nearly 15 lengths behind the leader through the first half-mile and more than ten lengths back entering the far turn. She finally got in gear around the turn, picking off rivals while racing inside and outside of her opponents. Smith said Zenyatta did not break particularly well or handle dirt in her face in the early stages. "She just wasn't leveling out like I wanted to; the combination of the dirt hitting her face was a lot of it," Smith said. "Just left her with too much to do. In August of 2005, several artists, many of them veterans of the British Invasion, came together at BB King's in Manhattan to honor Mike and to celebrate his work. The musicians on that special evening included Billy J. Kramer, Denny Laine, the Zombies, a reunion of Peter and Gordon, and the Fab Faux. It was an amazing evening and the FF remain honored to have been a part of it. Mike passed away on February 28th, days before the induction of the Dave Clark Five into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Anyone who had the pleasure of meeting Mike, or the even greater pleasure of working with him, will not soon forget him.

Near the end of her farewell to racing and welcome to Kentucky ceremony at Keeneland, Mike Smith puts his arms around Zenyatta's neck and gives her a hug. Over 1000 people had braved the 17 degree weather, snow, cold, and a two hour delay of Zenyatta's plane due to weather conditions, to greet her at Keeneland. The ceremony was originally scheduled for the saddling paddock near the track, but had to be changed to a lighted place. Zenyatta once paraded in this very ring as a yearling, before being led into the auction ring to be sold to Mr. and Mrs. Moss. Five years later, she was back after a stellar career, to give her fans one last dance before retiring to Lane's End farm to a life as a broodmare. At the first ever BTCC race at the Birmingham Superprix. There was a lot expectations and excitement going around with the supporting bill of the BTCC at the street circuit. The race started off well at the first corner. But then radio DJ, Mike Smith loses it at the exit of the chicane at the first lap and crashes into the Armco.
