Battle for Kurram Agency and Militancy - Pakistan Army launches Operation Koh-e-Safaid

PAF s' Multimedia paffalcons.com Military offensive has been launched against militants in central tehsil of Kurram Agency and families have started fleeing the conflict zone, sources said. A senior official in Peshawar confirmed that a 'full-fledged operation' had been launched in the valley on Sunday. Two weeks ago, the government had notified 80 square kilometres of the area in central Kurram as conflict zone. "I have no specific details, but operation has started in the mountainous area," the official said. Central Kurram is adjacent to Tora Bora, reportedly the stronghold of Al Qaeda in Afghanistan. Militants having lost their positions in Waziristan and other parts of Fata and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have set up their sanctuaries in Central Kurram. The sources said that troops had been dropped from helicopters in Manato and Zaimukhet and army and paramilitary forces, backed by air force, were conducting a joint operation in the area. They said that thousands of troops were taking part in the operation. The military offensive has triggered displacement as large numbers of families have started moving to lower part of the tehsil where a relief camp has been set up at Durrani area. The Fata Disaster Management Authority has set up two registration centres where 500 displaced families have enrolled themselves so far. According to official estimates, over 4000 families are likely to flee their homes because of the military operation.

PAF s' Multimedia paffalcons.com Lt. Gen. "I have five brigades over there — about 20000-25000 troops." Malik says he is losing men in the area, killing insurgents and terrorists. But the US is impatient for Pakistan to strike the Haqqani network, a militant organization named after its leaders that finds sanctuary in North Waziristan. Peshawar, Taliban issue Video of attack on Bannu Jail

The Pakistani Taliban, on Tuesday, released a video showing the attack carried out by them last month to release prisoners from the Bannu jail. The video shows the pre-attack planning, the jailbreak operation and the release of Taliban prisoners, including Adnan Rashid, a key suspect in the attack on former president Pervez Musharraf. The 34-minute video by militants, begins with a previously recorded message from former Tehrik-i-Taliban (TTP) chief Hakimullah Mehsud and the Meshud Taliban chief Waliur Rehman Mehsud and goes on with a tirade against Pakistan's army and democratic and judicial systems. The militant leaders are also seen making renewed threats to continue such attacks to for the release of Taliban prisoners. In the pre-attack phase, the video shows militants' planning with hand-made maps and sketches of Bannu Central Jail's surroundings and interiors, showing security pickets and details of security cordons. At an unknown location believed to be in North or South Waziristan tribal areas, a masked militant instructs the fighters, detailing how they are supposed to carry out attacks on the security pickets of the jail from all sides and the main gate. "The main motive of our attack is to set free innocent people from the custody of the tyrant rulers and provide them easy and cheap justice," Waliur Rehman says, with a white flag in the background. Nigeria: Militants Not Backing Down

Militants fighting for self-determination in the oil-rich Niger Delta say they will battle on despite deadly shelling by government forces. STORY: Rebels battling for a self-reliant region in the Niger Delta appear unbowed by days of shelling by Nigerian government forces. Asari Dokubo is leader of the Niger Delta Vigilante Force militants. [Asari Dokubo, Leader, Niger Delta Vigilante Force]: "We will not stop, it will not stop. I will continue. We will continue to proceed by any means necessary. If they bring peace we will hold on to peace. If they bring war we will hold on to war because we cannot be treated like this and we cannot just be raising our hands and falling and dying." The army says it's rescued at least 17 people being held hostage and destroyed a major militant camp. Rights watchdogs in the region are warning that the wave of shelling by helicopter gunships and gunboats has triggered a mass exodus of villagers. This footage was handed out by rebel groups who say civilians are among the casualties of the military offensive. Nigeria's main militant group, The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, on Friday declared all-out war. The groups attacks in Africa's biggest oil and gas region has cut Nigeria's crude output by a fifth since 2006 and forced foreign firms to withdraw all but essential staff.

Why Is President Obama Keeping a Journalist in Prison in Yemen?

Via Jeremy Scahill of The Nation: "On February 2, 2011, President Obama called Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh. The two discussed counterterrorism cooperation and the battle against Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. At the end of the call, according to a White House read-out, Obama "expressed concern" over the release of a man named Abdulelah Haider Shaye, whom Obama said "had been sentenced to five years in prison for his association with AQAP." It turned out that Shaye had not yet been released at the time of the call, but Saleh did have a pardon for him prepared and was ready to sign it. It would not have been unusual for the White House to express concern about Yemen's allowing AQAP suspects to go free. Suspicious prison breaks of Islamist militants in Yemen had been a regular occurrence over the past decade, and Saleh has been known to exploit the threat of terrorism to leverage counterterrorism dollars from the United States. But this case was different. Abdulelah Haider Shaye is not an Islamist militant or an Al Qaeda operative. He is a journalist...".* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down. *Read the full piece: www.thenation.com Subscribe to The Young Turks: bit.ly Find out how to watch The Young Turks on Current by clicking here: www.current.com The Largest Online New Show in the World. At least forty soldiers of Chitral Scouts were killed and many others wounded when militants from Afghanistan attacked border checkpoints in northern Chitral district Saturday, Geo News reported. According to local sources, a large number of militants launched pre-dawn attacks on several posts with rockets and heavy weapons. Several rockets landed on the camps of Chitral Scouts and Pakistani forces retaliated inflicting heavy casualties on the militants, reports said. According to local sources the Taliban attacked Pak-Afghan border checkpoints including Arson, Dameel Nisar, Bodebar and Mirkani. Militants have blocked Arando Road near the Pakistani border area of Bodebar which is making retaliation difficult for Scout forces, sources added.
