But the from the bench, their usual 2-3 MOA performance with standard FMJ ammunition is a bit underwhelming (Ranch, Tactical, NRA models). How will it perform in real world tactical shooting? Come on along as buddy "InadvertentSmell" and I pit a Mini-14 "Tactical" against two of the best tactical carbine designs, the AK-74 (variant) and AR-15. The competitors are an Arsenal SGL31 in 5.45x39mm and a Rock River Arms "Entry Tactical" model AR-15, both highly proven shooters in Nutnfancy RunNGun courses of fire, including "The Sledgehammer." This course involved some pistol shooting for both fun and training (FNP9 and SW M&P9 at 12 yds) and then engaging paper bad guy targets from both kneeling (or prone) and barricaded positions. Distances were 50, 76, 80, and 175 yds (rusted propane tank...forgot the "Evil Roy Steel" plates to setup full SH Drill). Smell and I wore DL 2 level loadouts for the multiple runs on this sunny day in the desert (nice change from all the snow!). With a new set of standard sights on the Mini 14 and not wanting you use the big guns much I took out my mini 14 and a couple hundred rounds of ammo, at 300yds we found out it was shooting high, and so I had to adjust. With the sun making everything seem all the better I tried shooting from kneeling and standing and found that the weight of the rifle (or lack of it) really helped me. I have been told the mini 14 is useless after a 100yds, well I took it to 600 with without being correctly sighted in and using mediocre ammo I managed to achieve reasnoble groups. Model #5847 is reviewed here but its representative of the whole Ruger Mini-14 Tactical and Ranch rifle lineup. The accuracy criticisms held some truth as the older Mini-14s (and their poor quality, pencil-thin barrels) often had heat-stringing issues and about 4-7 MOA accuracy (with rack-grade ammunition). In this thorough Nutnfancy review of Mini-14 Tactical model (and NRA Model providing more data points), I cut through this chaff and attempt to get to the truth. Redemption for the Tapco Mini-14 magazine! As I had stated in my June 2010 criticisms of the Gen 1 magazine, I had complete confidence that Tapco would correct the issues. Collaborating directly with Tapco, the is the result. Welcome to the best magazine in the world for the Mini-14: Tapco GEN 2s. The best improvement is the steel lug strapped that I had called for in my initial review. It's a now a reality! This provides excellent durability and gives a rock solid lockup equal to that of the Ruger factory steel Mini-14 mags. Improved and more rigid polymers, feed lips, and body are also part of the Gen 2 makeup. And they only weigh 5.2 ounces, almost half that of the still excellent but brick-heavy 9.0 ounce factory 30 rounders! A minor downside still persists: these still don't like steel cased ammunition and hiccups will occur with it. Perhaps for most guys, this isn't a big deal as brass is used for more serious work. But with brass ammunition in 100s of rounds fired (shown), this Gen 2 Tapco mag rules the roost. It only took me 28 years to finally get a really nice trigger in a Mini-14. It was something I always wanted to do but never go around to do doing...until now! Here experienced Impact Guns gunsmith Terry Gardner (call sign from me: "Yoda G") opens up his shop and candidly shows his technique on achieving a crisp, 2-stage 3.5 lb trigger pull on this Mini-14 Tactical model. Don't kid yourself though. While Terry makes it look easy and downplays the difficulty, there will be many opportunities for you to dick it up if you try it yourself (I've learned this on other guns myself). This is a test of a new rifle and new camera. Every young American man ought to have both of these items. Hehehe. This new Canon camera is wonderful. I really like the quality. And, hey, the Mini 14 is a great rifle (but I didn't need to videotape it to know that). The video was edited with Sony Vegas 9.0. Another great purchase (pretty much required if you want to edit the Canon's highly-compressed files).

Some disappointing performance from the new Tapco Gen 1 Mini-14 polymer mags. I think the performance will be improved with future iterations but the feed performance, wobbly fit, and difficult mag well insertion (when full) all need to be corrected. This is my 581 series ruger mini 14 ranch rifle with 18.5inch barrel. I have it in a ATI folding / telescoping stock, with a two stage muzzle brake, vertical grip with pop out bi-pod, hawke high definition mil dot scope, liberty sling, and 2 ruger 30 round magazines - one 20 round mag, and a promag 30 round magazine. With 5.56 xm193f ammo this rifle is capable of 1.5 inch groups at 100 yards. Ruger did a great job with re-tooling the mini 14 rifle, the accuracy is much better than the pre 2008 models. This rifle has never jammed in over 2000 rounds of mostly bottom shelf silver and brown bear .223 ammo. The only problem I have ever had was related to crappy after market magazines which I promptly returned. Cleaning is very simple, the rifle breaks down into a few basic components. I would consider this rifle as reliable as a ak style rifle. It is a great choice for hunting, varmint control, or even as a self defense or tactical carbine rifle.

Firing my new Ruger Mini-14 Ranch Rifle at the range for the First Time. I love shooting this rifle. First shot at 25 yds, then 50 yds without scope. Added scope at 50yds and sited it in. Very accurate. Next shot at 100yds with scope, had some groupings, but nothing great. I need much more practice. Using 20 round Ruger magazines with .223 ammo. * Thanks for your Support. This is the 3 or 4th time I have filmed Lee shooting at the range. He is a gunsmith and shooter and is always more than happy to allow me to film him. Shooting my new Ruger Mini-14 tactical. The weapon had not been "sighted in" prior to this day at the range. It was new out of the box. And yes, it was a very windy day but I was really trying to crunch some time. Initial shots were fired from approximately 55 yards. First group shot low and off target. Adjustments were made resulting in a tight group left of center. Final adjustments were made. The part 2 of the video shows my results on target. I then fired 40 rounds from approximately 20 to 30 yards. All 40 rounds were fired from the standing position resulting in a pretty tight group. My first few were high. This was my error and I quickly corrected my self. Hope you enjoy the video. The accuracy with this particular model is far greater compared to other previous mini-14's And I highly recomend picking up one of these bad boys! Purchased mine for about $680.00 More videos to come now that I'm back rockin the mini! I appologize for having to upload 2 videos. My software cant splice them worth a shit. lol
