g-speak - minority report os demo

If youve been waiting for that Minority Report-style interface to really come to fruition, you can finally exhale. One of the science advisors from the Steven Spielberg film has created a real-world implementation of the computer systems seen in the film. Dubbed g-speak, the mind bending OS combines gestural i/o, recombinant networking, and real-world pixels, to deliver what the creators call the first major step in [a] computer interface since 1984. The G-Speak system basically "consists of an off-the-shelf DLP projector and special gloves embedded with reflective beads."

Kinect Hand Detection

This is a graphical interface inspired by the movie "Minority Report". It uses the Kinect sensor from Microsoft, and the recently released libfreenect driver for interfacing with the Kinect in linux. The graphical interface and the hand detection software were written at MIT to interface with the open source robotics package 'ROS', developed by Willow Garage (willowgarage.com). The hand detection software showcases the abilities of the Point Cloud Library (PCL), a part of ROS that MIT has been helping to optimize. The hand detection software is able to distinguish hands and fingers in a cloud of more than 60000 points at 30 frames per second, allowing natural, real time interaction. 3D Multi-touch Prototype for Augmented and Virtual Reality

In this video I demonstrate the 3D interaction prototype that I have developed during my Master Thesis at Fraunhofer FIT in Bonn, Germany. The system uses a depth sensing camera, which is based on the time-of-flight principle and measures phase shifts of a reflected infrared signal. My contribution is the computer vision algorithm, the gesture recognition technique as well as the concept and implementation of the demo application.

The Mouse Glove

Computer mice are so 1995... Time to step it up and WEAR it! After watching Minority report 5 times in a row I decided it would be cool to feel like my hand is REALLY controlling the computer. This is when the mouse glove popped into my head. Now this is just an early prototype, but today I will show you how to put on a simple glove and have hours of fun touching various surfaces with your hands whilst still controlling your computer. PointScreen - Minority Report Style Interface (2003) by Monika Fleischmann & Wolfgang Strauss

PointScreen is a novel interface to manipulate digital artefacts touchlessly based on enhanced human body energy. Currently, the control, ie cursor movement and selection, of computational devices is dominated either by mouse-click for desktop applications or by touch-screen-press for public terminals. The PointScreen interface enables the user to control the computer intuitively with a simple pointing gesture and to navigate or execute commands simply by pointing at the screen - without touching it at any time. Thus, it is highly suitable for application domains in the public or semi-public space like in museums, exhibitions or for interactive window-shopping. Beyond, areas with a high need of hygiene eg as surgeries, may be interested in the system since it is operated touchlessly. PointScreen is easy and economically to install and maintain: the system can be placed invisibly behind any non-metal material and integrated easily with any normal display or projection surface. As first application, the "Info-Jukebox", a digital multimedia kiosk system, was developed. g-speak: Oblong Industries Gestural Interface Computers Coming Soon!

Hollywood blows me away sometimes. If you look back at Star Trek, we use so much of that style of technology today. Flip phones look like Starfleet communicators and the doors that open automatically come to mind. When I saw Minority report a few years back, I was blown away by how Tom Cruise was using this amazing computer by just waving his hands around, well, it looks like we are just a few years away from that becoming a reality too thanks to Oblong Industries!

Intel Real Time 3D VR - TFOT

At CES 2009 Intel showcased a unique 3D virtual world powered by the companys new i7 Core processor. This rear projection 3D capacitive touch panel (no multi touch sadly), highly resembles the holographic technology depicted in Steven Spielbergs 2002 movie Minority Report. Intel has no known plans to market the technology but it does give us a look at the amazing power of modern computing technology.
