Minotaur Project - Synthetic Minotaur (featuring Cobus Potgieter on drums)
The story of this video is that the guy who first gave me the idea to make videos of my songs came out with a "songwriting challenge" (sort of...), in which he proposed his drum tracks to be used to create a new, original song. Since it was about time for me to compose new material (and my latest isn't exactly finished yet), I decided to jump on the idea, so this song is made for the contest. Cobus Potgieter was a drummer I always wanted to play with, and even that I'm after my long journey (1300km) to find a new home, I am still too far to make it happen. Now I got the chance. His recording was made as a cover for Breaking Benjamin's I Will Not Bow, he played drums over that song. I turned it into something else, something I'd rather call my style. Something Minotaur-like, as usual :) Something before any flame-wars: I recorded the song way before the video, which means what you see when I play is not exactly what you hear. I think it's pretty obvious that I consider myself a composer and a fan of music videos rather than a studio musician who actually can improvise the same thing twice (yes, on the bass a lot of the stuff was improvised by watching Cobus playing the drums, later on that was nearly impossible to recreate... or I just didn't give a damn, really). "A Minotaur rocket with a low-cost, high-tech demonstration satellite was launched from the eastern coast of Virginia at 7:55 pm EDT this evening" - Space Flight Now (spaceflightnow.com "WALLOPS ISLAND, VIRGINIA NASA'S Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia was the site of the launch of an Air Force Minotaur I rocket carrying the Air Force Research Laboratorys TacSat-3 satellite and two secondary payloads. The TacSat-3 launch was the third Minotaur vehicle launched from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceports launch pad 0B on the southern end of Wallops Island. The launch was seen throughout the mid-Atlantic area. The two secondary payloads are NASAs PharmaSat microsatellite, developed at the Ames Research Center in California, and NASAs CubeSat Technology Demonstration experiments, which includes three four-inch cubed satellites, developed by universities and industry. Air Force Space Commands Space and Missile Systems Centers Space Development and Test Wing at Kirtland AFB, NM, has overall management of the mission. One of the most professional applications I recieved came from Petra, who also proved to be one of the most delightful person I've worked with on the Minotaur Project, not to mention one of the most experienced female studio singers ever. She actually had more experience with working an outside composer, than I had with singers from the distance (check out her earlier songs, she worked with pretty amazing guitarists before me) - which made the workflow pretty flawless from my end, and caused a result we both are proud of. This is also a great experience for me, because I wrote the vocal melodies (a guide actually) for the first time in Minotaur Project history. Bioshell seemed to be a nice idea to begin our work. Long ago in the Iron Age a shadow loomed over a lonely village. For generations the village youths are stolen from their families and delivered as sacrifice to a mythical beast - the Minotaur, that dwells beneath a great palace. Theo, haunted by the loss of his love in an earlier sacrifice is convinced that the beast isn't real and that his girl still lives as a slave within the palace. His father Cyrnan, the village leader, tries to reason with Theo not to go but Theo is driven by blind rage. He devises a plan and is taken with the other youths who are dragged screaming from their families.
