The producers do not tolerate or support racism in any form. In fact, they find racism to be abhorrent. This is merely a look at how black have been portrayed in the past using a historical clip from the 1949 feature film, Hollywood Varieties. One does not have to look far to find many other examples of racial stereotyping in popular media in the first half of the 20th century. Radio shows, movies, and comic strips were filled with caricatures of Blacks, Native Americans, Hispanics, Asians, Jews, and every other minority. It is to our great credit that we have evolved as far as we have since then, but we should preserve our history and not try to rewrite it in some Orwellian attempt to excise those parts of it that we now find abhorrent.

This group was the brainchild of Randy Sparks who named it after the folk/balladeer troupe "Christy Minstrels" formed in 1842 by Edwin P. Christy. The idea was to bring together a collection of unique talents be they vocal and/or instrumental into one "super-group", and the New Christy Minstrels met with a lot of success early on. "Today" is a song that was used in the soundtrack of a Glenn Ford comedy called "Advance To The Rear", and through the spring and summer of 1964 was a huge hit reaching #17 on the pop charts. At the time of this original recording, the group was in a state of flux so the membership was ever-changing with Randy remaining a constant. Among the many members the New Christy Minstels have had included Kenny Rogers, Kim Carnes, Barry McGuire, Gene Clark of The Byrds, and The Association's Larry Ramos. I would like to personally thank Randy Sparks and Becky Jo Benson of the New Christy Minstrels for their assistance and encouragement in the creation of this video presentation of "Today" for YouTube.

Charlie is playing the Irish drum, or The bodhrán (pronounced /ˈbɔrɑːn/[1] or /ˈbaʊrɑːn/; plural bodhráns or bodhráin) is an Irish frame drum ranging from 25 to 65 cm (10" to 26") in diameter, with most drums measuring 35 to 45 cm (14" to 18"). The sides of the drum are 9 to 20 cm (3½" to 8") deep. A goatskin head is tacked to one side (synthetic heads, or other animal skins are sometimes used). The other side is open ended for one hand to be placed against the inside of the drum head to control the pitch and timbre. One or two crossbars, sometimes removable, may be inside the frame, but this is increasingly rare on modern instruments. Some professional modern bodhráns integrate mechanical tuning systems similar to those used on drums found in drum kits.
