I mentioned I had learnt this song on my cavaquinho the other day, so I thought I'd post a video of it. This video is especially for Ivan, the kind donator of my new cavaquinho! I hope to be able to write a song on it soon - just need some more practice! Admittedly about 2 tones to high for me, so apologies for the vocals, but such is the way of this song - it has to be played in an open tuning - it meant I would have to tune the cavaquinho down an entire two tones, but that would be sacrilege! This cavaquinho is tuned to DGBD - ie an open G major chord. In case you're wondering why I'm not playing a ukulele - the cavaquinho is the instrument that all ukuleles are descended from! Originally written by a man, about a woman, you'd be forgiven for thinking that with me being a heterosexual female I would change the "her" to a "him". But the "her" is integral to the rhyming scheme of the middle section of the song. It would be the equivalent of changing "Brown Eyed Girl" to "Brown Eyed Boy" - a travesty.... I know it's full of "baby"s and it's a cheesy bond theme, but I recently learnt this song for Jonathan (CJ) Westwood, who "purchased" it during my PledgeMusic fund-raising project (THANK YOU JONATHAN!) It took me a while to learn it, so I thought perhaps the rest of the world should hear it too after all that effort! (I really hope he doesn't mind!) My version is a mixture of my own arrangement and a few bits of the one posted by Mr. Ukulele Hunt... I had most of it figured out and then realised he'd tabbed it too, which was very useful indeed! My version is slightly different, I use a few different chords here and there and some of the twiddly bits are played differently. Here at The Crypt Sessions, it doesnt take much for us to put extra icing on our cupcakes, but this week were partying extra hard. Not only is it our tenth episode but were featuring Sophie Madeleine to boot. Bring on the hundreds and thousands. Armed with her trusty ukelele, a voice to die for and a penchant for hirsute gentlemen, Sophie has been taking the web by storm. A DIY video for her Beard Song has recieved 136000 hits on YouTube, while her fabulous album, Life.Love.Ukelele, is winning plaudits from the blogosphere and beyond. Its not hard to see why. With a masters degree in songwriting, Sophies sublime pop songs are perfectly crafted creations charming, sunny, very funny and as pretty as their mother. Sophie played most of the instruments on the album herself, but even a talent such as hers doesnt stretch to playing three instruments simultaneously.
