[TemptingReviews] Asus Eee Slate EP121 - Windows 7 Tablet

Finally...a slate that is worth the dollars asked. The ExoPC (which I also wrote a review about) being $800 pales in comparison to the Eee Slate which is $300 more. Based on the specs of this beast, I would say the ExoPC is overpriced by about $400. Nice machine, but just comparing specs. This device has two things that make it not quite appealing to everyone: The weight and the battery life. The weight makes it not that desirable for lengthy holding, though it is no more heavy than any of the Motion Computing tablets. IN fact, spec-wise this is comparable to the Motion J3500, it just doesn't have the same battery life (and obviously, this is because it's a lot slimmer than the Motion tablet). Contains the same Gorilla Glass which by itself makes it infinitely more valuable than any other tablet out there, but the back seems to be simple plastic rather than ruggedized, so I figure the machine could still break and you'd just have a flawless piece of glass. Who knows. On a scale of 10 I would give it an 8. Battery life and weight are the only factors holding it back. Again THIS IS NOT AN IPAD COMPETITOR. I would go out on a limb by saying this isn't even really a consumer device. I'm not sure why they put 7 Home Premium on it (64 bit Home Premium at that), because it just doesn't fit into a consumer market with the Android tablets and the iPad. My advice: Upgrade it to 7 Ultimate or Professional, and use it in a business environment as a mobile computing solution. ARE YOU ...

[TemptingReviews] Asus Eee Slate Boot Speed Comparison

The Asus Eee Slate is pitted against three devices: the Exo PC, the 11.6" MacBook Air (2010), and the 17" MacBook Pro (2010). All four devices have solid state drives which represents the fastest possible boot scenarios. The only device that booted faster than the Eee Slate was the Big Apple, and not by much.

[TemptingReviews] M-Audio Fast Track Audio Controller

Allows custom controls of recording sources, ie microphone, guitar, etc. and direct output via USB to a PC/Mac, or stereo analog audio to a receiver or recorder. It then becomes the managing device for the level of output of the audio as well as the headphone audio (if you choose to use headphones when you record, which you should). Works perfectly with GarageBand/Logic on the Mac, though you should realize that it will take over the audio level control.

Review of the 17" MacBook Pro (2010)

I like it call it the Big Mac. An amazing laptop for any developer or someone who needs the extra screen real estate. I submit though: the 13" and 15" MacBook Pros aren't slouches. They're solid machines themselves, so really, get the one that has the screen size most comfortable for you. Each one can handle the most extreme of tasks fairly easily.

[TemptingGuides] Droid Bionic Battery Life Part 1 - Widgets

First in a six-part series that gives you some helpful tips and tricks for optimizing the battery life for the Droid Bionic. Some people are widget fanatics. I want to tell you that widgets can and will kill your battery. I know they're cool, but you need to learn to work without them if you want better battery. if you absolutely require the widgets then you need to accept that your battery will stink.

[TemptingReviews] Samsung Fascinate (Verizon Wireless)

The first in a series of high quality reviews, brought to you by Franchise-Net Media. The Samsung Fascinate from Verizon Wireless is a phone with two personalities. Out of the box it's a piece of garbage. Those who are bold and "root" their phone will find that the device is in the upper echelon of devices ever released. iPhone clone? Only if the clone surpasses the mold.

[TemptingGuides] Droid RAZR - Smart Actions 101

The Droid RAZR is the first and only (hopefully for now only) Android phone to feature the Smart Actions application, which lets you set fixed templated actions that fire based on triggered events. While there are third party applications in the Market that attempt to replicate the behavior, this application is quite versatile and capable of managing a lot of rote tasks. This video will talk you through the basics of Smart Actions. It is critical that you have at least basic organizational skills to understand how the Smart Actions need to be configured. If your life is scattered and unpredictable, or you want to play with your phone constantly, Smart Actions won't help you much.

[TemptingReviews] Asus Eee Slate / Wacom Penabled Digitizer

Requested by a viewer. The Asus Eee Slate will work with Wacom Penabled Digitizers. Here I demonstrate one with the side button. I recommend not installing the drivers as for some reason I lost pressure sensitivity when I installed them from Wacom. Might have blew away the pressure sensitivity settings, but when I pay $1200 for something I expect it to "just work" and don't want to have to futz with settings if I don't have to.

[TemptingReviews] Samsung Fascinate vs. Verizon iPhone 4

Remember...there is no such thing as the "best" device. It depends on what you need your phone to do for you. There's no one size fits all, no matter what anyone tells you. If you're embedded in Google, the iPhone will frustrate you. If you're infatuated with Amazon, the iPhone will restrict you. It's really that simple.

[TemptingGuides] Droid Bionic Battery Life Part 2 - Accounts and Sync

Part 2 of the six-part series for the Droid Bionic's battery life. A lot of people have all sorts of accounts doing push synchronization. These are battery hogs and will destroy your battery life. The question is, can you learn to live with a little delay? Logically you should be working or studying at school or doing something during the day, and you don't need to have stuff pushed down to your phone, so maybe you can set your schedules to run once every 5 minutes instead?

[TemptingGuides] Droid Bionic Battery Life Part 3 - Data Settings

Part 3 (and the largest) of a six-part series for the Droid Bionic's battery life. You can control how much data your phone uses on a daily basis. This does require some manual intervention on your part, but if you leave all data on and free, you will destroy your battery. Certain settings will allow you to get the same basic experience, but just manually controlled, which will increase the battery life available.

[TemptingGuides] Tablet Tech: iPad, Nook Color, Galaxy Tab

An objective view of some of the tablets available, moreso for the form factors and use cases. The iPad is probably the perfect device for the simplest of applications - someone who wants to sit on the couch and check email or browse the web, or stream Designing Women. The Galaxy Tab is near flawless if you're into Google and/or Amazon. The Nook Color is a cheaper alternative for those that want an Android tablet but can't justify the high prices.

[TemptingReviews] Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1" (Wi-Fi)

Samsung's newest version of the Galaxy Tab offers a form factor that rivals the iPad 2 in size. But beyond that, Samsung did not compromise on the specs of the machine. Honeycomb 3.1 provides the most clean and intuitive Android experience to date, and the memory and processor lend themselves to a speedy, efficient machine. Probably the only negative is the lack of any sort of external storage without the purchase of third party accessories; hopefully a price drop is in the near future for this in order to set itself apart from the iPad 2.

[TemptingReviews] WD TV Live Hub

Two-part review. First is the hardware and a brief introduction to the device. Stay tuned after that for the interface review. Complaints: - Western Digital really should release a non-hard drive version and drop the price. The OS can remain in flash memory like other devices. - No built-in wireless, but Ethernet is probably a better choice for streaming anyway. Still would be nice, so that I could take it with me on travel. - Cover art not consistent across all views. On a 10 scale I'd give it a solid 8. It's a great device for what it offers - but you really should hire someone (not Geek Squad) if you don't know what you're doing.

[TemptingReviews] 11.6" MacBook Air (2010)

The MacBook Air has been redesigned from the ground up, both internally and externally. It was long overdue for a refresh, and it is now a solid machine in the Apple lineup. I wouldn't put it through too much in terms of heavy lifting, but for the majority of regular, casual users, this machine is the perfect balance of efficiency and portability. The only open question is whether the price is worth it for that balance.

[TemptingReviews] Droid RAZR Part 3 - Screen Quality

The Droid RAZR features AMOLED technology combined with a Pentile display (which most Motorola devices have). The combination results in battery savings over standard LCD such as the Thunderbolt and Rezound from HTC, but drops image quality in areas. Phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S II, Fascinate, and others that feature AMOLED technology have higher than normal contrasts and extremely wide black levels; the RAZR shares this quality with these phones. One big downside I noticed with the screen is that the resolution is noticeably lower than that of the Bionic and even the Thunderbolt. Normally this would not be an issue, but icon text and certain fonts look bulky and oversized, resulting in a crowded appearance. Android does not allow you to adjust dpi settings, so there's no way to get around this.

[TemptingReviews] Apple Wireless Technology: Airport Extreme, Airport Express, Time Capsule

Overview of the three Apple wireless devices currently available and comparisons of the three devices. I did mention I would show Airport Utility, but decided against it due to length considerations. In summary, there is no one device that fits everyone. They are more expensive compared to their non-Apple counterparts, but if you run Apple computers in your home, the wireless works tremendously better with Apple computers than non-Apple routers will. Additionally, if you buy an Apple computer and have a Time Capsule or Airport Extreme, they will be covered under your Apple's AppleCare plan which is a nice bonus. Currently I use the Extreme and the Time Capsule; the Time Capsule serves my older devices, the Extreme serves my three Mac computers. It works out very nice for me.

[TemptingGuides] Droid Bionic Battery Life Part 4 - Wi-Fi

Part 4 (And the smallest) of a six-part series for the Droid Bionic's battery life. Wi-Fi by itself is better for your battery than wireless data. However, you should be aware that if your phone is not near a known or desired wireless hotspot, it will constantly try to connect when it is unable to. This may affect your battery life without your knowledge. You might consider manually controlling the Wi-Fi state when you are not near a known or desired hotspot; you can also use JuiceDefender to manage this for you, but at a cost.

Part 5 of a six-part series for the Droid Bionic's battery life. The Motorola Task Manager is a quick way to manage running applications, and set auto-end conditions for applications that should not be running. However, you need to keep an eye on this area; don't trust the auto-end, as it may not terminate all applications completely. Some will re-run themselves, especially after a reboot. [TemptingReviews] HP TouchPad (16GB) Unboxing, Hardware Review

The HP TouchPad is the latest in tablets, the first to feature WebOS. In a time when we are literally flooded with Android tablets, and iPad is hitting legendary sales numbers, HP is attempting to release something that goe in a different direction. Given the nature of this tablet and the timing, this will be a two-part review: one for the hardware and one for the OS. This is absolutely necessary, because as with the Palm Pre before it, the hardware is really what holds things back. WebOS on the right hardware has always had the potential to be something great. Unfortunately, the TouchPad hardware isn't the right solution, and it's clear that HP was on a mad dash to get something out before the iPad 3 was released.

[TemptingReviews] Brookstone Personal Speaker (previous generation)

The Brookstone personal speaker allows any device equipped with a 3.5mm line out jack to project its audio more powerfully than some built-in speakers. Doesn't matter if it's a cell phone, computer, iPad, iPod, or other device. It has rechargeable batteries and can be charged using any regular USB charger, computer or power strip with a USB port. While it does not support any wireless or Bluetooth transmission, you can purchase adapters that will allow you to stream audio instead. The device is powerful for its size, but isn't going to blow away standard home stereo surround systems. It can though, provide enough power to decently fill up a workspace or bedroom with richer audio than you might get otherwise.

[TemptingReviews] Logitech Personal Bluetooth Speaker Z515

The Logitech Bluetooth Speaker features quality audio at a slight premium. If you are wanting to stream music from your portable device this is something you may consider using. It features built-in Bluetooth for any device that supports it as well as a standard line-in jack for those that don't. For older computers it comes with a Bluetooth dongle, so you can still take advantage of true wireless streaming of your audio library. The Z515 can last on battery for approximately 6-8 hours of continuous Bluetooth streaming. If you're using this to enhance computer speakers, you might consider just leaving it plugged in. One minor downside is that there is some feedback when the speaker is being charged. I didn't notice it at first, and you may not ever hear it if you have the music at a certain volume or higher, but I note it here just as a side.

[TemptingGuides] Droid Bionic Battery Life Part 6 - Display

Last in the six-part series for the Droid Bionic's battery life. As with other Motorola Droid phones, the Bionic features the Pentile display, which features slightly separated pixels. Some may be bothered by this effect, and it appears to the user as though there is a low quality "grid" over the display. However, the Pentile display actually increases visibility outdoors, and uses significantly less battery than other higher resolution displays. If you can learn to deal with the Pentile display, you will find the display is quite easy on the battery. This video focuses more on the auto brightness and the fact that you may drop the brightness down to a lower, fixed level in order to save a bit of battery. You also may want to disable animations.

[TemptingReviews] 13" MacBook Air 2011 vs. 13" MacBook Pro 2011

On the fence? Can't decide? it's not a hard choice to make. The #1 reason to choose the Air is to have a slim machine. If that's really all you care about and 2 pounds is too much for you, the Air is perfect. The reality is, the Pro is upgradeable. It can have ANY hard drive you want in it. You can have up to 16GB of RAM if you want. The screen is superior. The build quality is superior. The processor is faster. The case has better ventilation for the heat generated. I'm not saying for a moment that the AIr doesn't have a place. It does. It's a great companion machine, great for being on an airplane. It's not going to be a viable primary laptop unless all you do is browse the web and hit up Facebook. The reality though is that the Pro has more long term value than the Air.

[TemptingReviews] Amazon Kindle (3rd Generation)

The Kindle is the standard by which other e-readers are created. To date, no other e-reader has managed to do everything as well as the Kindle. Its only true limitation is the "walled garden" of books - you can only read books that you buy from Kindle, and PDFs. If you ever get a chance to try the Kindle at Best Buy or Frys do so. It's a solid device for those that just want an e-reader.
