This is my tribute to the railroad which has inspired my entire life. The photos of the abandoned line at the end were actually taken by me, with the exception of the photo of the bridge with rails not mine, however. The Missouri--Kansas--Texas Railroad was incorporated May 23, 1870. In its earliest days the MKT was commonly referred to as "the KT", which was its stock exchange symbol; this common designation soon evolved into "the Katy". At the time of 1870 incorporation, consolidations were also made with the Labette & Sedalia Railway Co. and the Neosho Valley & Holden Railway Co. At this time MKT also acquired the Tebo & Nosho Railroad Co., the St. Louis & Santa Fe Railroad Co., and the Hannibal & Central Missouri Railroad Co. Combined with the Union Pacific Railway, Southern Branch these small, newly built railroads formed the foundation on which the Katy would build. The MKT was also the first railroad to reach Texas from the north. The MKT, like many other railroads experienced a great downfall due to astringent government regulation in the railroad industry, which was only made worse with the introduction of the Freeway system. MKT Train Extra 327 passing North St. Louis, 4-10-1988
On April 10th, 1988, a few months before the Katy's Demise, Extra 327 passes two large industries in North St. Louis, Missouri. Note all the Railroad owned trailers on this Train, Santa Fe, Seaboard System, Burlington Northern, Conrail, etc. After the MKT merged witht he Union Pacific, all 4 of the Locomotives went to Diffrent Railroads. The 327 became Albany and Eastern #2001, the 330 became Wisconsin and Southern #3803, the 187 became EMDX Leasor #187, and the 181 became Dakota, Minnisota and Easteron #4001. The Caboose on the train is MKT Wide Vision Caboose #133, and was retired by the Union Pacific on November 15th, 1989, and is presumed to have been scrapped. Lincoln is back with the latest iteration of their Flex-based MKT. This refresh features My Lincoln Touch and a spruced up exterior. "Compared to the fixed-rate damper standard on the 2012 MKT, the CCD damper on the 2013 MKT offers dramatically expanded control range. CCD utilizes 46 inputs to feed data to a sophisticated control unit that continuously monitors more than 23000 packets of information per second. Three distinct driving modes -- Sport, Normal and Comfort -- are easy to select using the MKT's new Lincoln Drive Control and the shift lever. The standard engine for 2013 is a more powerful and efficient 3.7-liter V6 that includes twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT). The ability to vary camshaft timing to optimize the opening and closing of intake and exhaust valves increases the engine's power and efficiency. Horsepower for 2013 increases to 300 from 268, a 10 percent increase achieved with projected fuel economy ratings that improve to 17 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, a 1 mpg highway improvement. The MKT now offers more standard horsepower than the Audi Q7 and Acura MDX and nearly matches the 302-hp Mercedes-Benz R-350. Fuel economy for the MKT achieved on regular unleaded fuel surpasses these competitors by as much as 4 mpg highway. Nine out of 10 MKT retail customers opt for twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, an engine that provides V8 performance with the fuel economy of a V6. CHECK OUT LINCOLN MKT SPY PHOTOS: www.edmunds.com It's no secret that the 2010 Lincoln MKT is well on its way to showrooms, but this is the first spy video of the upcoming luxury utility vehicle in action. Caught hot-weather testing in Death Valley, California, the MKT is a new seven-passenger Lincoln crossover that rides on the same platform as the Ford Flex. Given the positive reaction to the concept shown in Detroit, it's not surprising to see that the Lincoln MKT hasn't changed much. Unlike the boxy Flex, the MKT gets a more elegant Lincoln grille, a laid-back windshield and a lower overall roof line. The result is a more athletic- — and more upscale- — looking vehicle that gives up little in terms of size to the Flex. Big rear doors should make for easy entrance into the second-row captain's chairs. There will be a third row of seats as well, although the lower roof line of the MKT might compromise headroom slightly. The wheels have a similar look to those used on the concept, but are slightly smaller at 19 inches. A set of 235/55R19 Pirelli Scorpion tires suggests that Lincoln is aiming for a fairly sporty ride. Ford has already confirmed that the MKT will get the company's new turbocharged 3.5-liter Ecoboost V6. Expected to produce around 340 horsepower and 340 pound-feet of torque, the Ecoboost engine should return decent mileage for such a big vehicle.
