Google Tech Talk June 16, 2010 Presented by Thad Starner. Our explorations in gesture recognition and tactile interfaces for wearable computing have revealed some surprising applications for mobile computing and the Deaf community. Mobile Music Touch, a glove with embedded vibrators, allows users to learn to play piano melodies while performing other tasks, such as reading this abstract. The Textile Interface Swatchbook demonstrates seven functional GUI-like interface widgets rendered on fabric with embroidered conductive thread. BuzzWear uses electro- and vibro-tactile displays on a wristband to present incoming alerts and to provide feedback for gesture input using proximity sensors. The MAGIC toolkit addresses the false triggering problem that limits the use of gestures to initiative interactions with motion sensor equipped mobile devices. CopyCat is an educational game that use our computer vision-based American Sign Language recognition system to help young deaf children acquire language skills. SmartSign teachs parents of deaf infants sign through sign lessons delivered on mobile phone. Finally, BrainSign attempts to recognize sign language gestures directly through brain signals in the motor cortex. Thad Starner is an Associate Professor at Georgia Institute of Technology's School of Interactive Computing. Thad was perhaps the first to integrate a wearable computer into his everyday life as an intelligent personal assistant. Starner's work as a PhD student would ...

More info: chrisharrison.net Scratch Input: Creating Large, Inexpensive, Unpowered and Mobile Finger Input Surfaces We present Scratch Input, an acoustic-based input technique that relies on the unique sound produced when a fingernail is dragged over the surface of a textured material, such as wood, fabric, or wall paint. We employ a simple sensor that can be easily coupled with existing surfaces, such as walls and tables, turning them into large, unpowered and ad hoc finger input surfaces. Our sensor is sufficiently small that it could be incorporated into a mobile device, allowing any suitable surface on which it rests to be appropriated as a gestural input surface. Several example applications were developed to demonstrate possible interactions. We conclude with a study that shows users can perform six Scratch Input gestures at about 90% accuracy with less than five minutes of training and on wide variety of surfaces.

I'm Alex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Technology Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Today we tell about some of the top technology developments of the last ten years. The technological revolution is changing the way we work and play. Mobile phones became smartphones, with abilities like computers. Many people started reading books on electronic readers. Televisions became high-definition and the screens became flat. Digital music players got smaller in size but large enough for people to download their entire music collections. Worldwide broadband subscriptions passed five hundred million. And, at least two billion people were expected to be online by the end of two thousand ten. Stephen Baker is the vice president of industry analysis for the consumer electronics market research group NPD. He says the technological developments of the twenty-first century have brought about some historic advances in consumer electronics. He said ten years ago might as well be a hundred years. If you look back at the way people interacted with electronics in two thousand and the way they interact with them today, there is no comparison. Ten years ago there were no flat panel televisions. There were no mobile web devices or smartphones. There were no e-book readers. And very few people had notebook computers.Bruce Bachenheimer is with the MIT Enterprise Forum in New York City. He is also the director of entrepreneurship at Pace University. He talked about what he believes ...

Finally...a slate that is worth the dollars asked. The ExoPC (which I also wrote a review about) being $800 pales in comparison to the Eee Slate which is $300 more. Based on the specs of this beast, I would say the ExoPC is overpriced by about $400. Nice machine, but just comparing specs. This device has two things that make it not quite appealing to everyone: The weight and the battery life. The weight makes it not that desirable for lengthy holding, though it is no more heavy than any of the Motion Computing tablets. IN fact, spec-wise this is comparable to the Motion J3500, it just doesn't have the same battery life (and obviously, this is because it's a lot slimmer than the Motion tablet). Contains the same Gorilla Glass which by itself makes it infinitely more valuable than any other tablet out there, but the back seems to be simple plastic rather than ruggedized, so I figure the machine could still break and you'd just have a flawless piece of glass. Who knows. On a scale of 10 I would give it an 8. Battery life and weight are the only factors holding it back. Again THIS IS NOT AN IPAD COMPETITOR. I would go out on a limb by saying this isn't even really a consumer device. I'm not sure why they put 7 Home Premium on it (64 bit Home Premium at that), because it just doesn't fit into a consumer market with the Android tablets and the iPad. My advice: Upgrade it to 7 Ultimate or Professional, and use it in a business environment as a mobile computing solution. ARE YOU ...

[Proof of Concept] We played Xbox Live on the middle of a bridge on top of the Missouri River via my Droid Incredible's Internet connection. This is the result of my project I've been working on for the past 3 weeks. How to Tether Android to Play Xbox Live: www.youtube.com How it works: The actual Pod is built from a standard storage rack which consists of a top & bottom rack with 4 legs. On each corner, I took twine, and connected the top rack with the bottom. This prevented the bottom rack from falling out when we lifted it up. On the bottom rack, I have my APC UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) which powers everything on the Pod via it's built-in battery which is charged prior to the trip. (It can also be charged in the car via a power inverter plugged into a standard cigarette lighter in the car.) Also on the bottom rack is the Xbox 360, 13" MacBook Pro, (Which is running Windows 7 Ultimate) and the Bose Companion 3 Subwoofer. On the top rack, there is a 19" 720p Samsung HDTV, my HTC Droid Incredible, and 2 satellite speakers (which are connected to the sub below) How it really works...: My Xbox 360 is connected, via ethernet cable, to my 13" MacBook Pro which is running Windows 7 Ultimate. The computer is connected, via USB, to my HTC Droid Incredible. The Incredible provides internet to the computer via the PDAnet application. The computer then bridges the connection it's receiving from the phone with the Xbox 360. (Phone --) Computer --) Xbox 360) This allows the ...
