Using Suitcase Connectors for Model Train Track Wiring - Part 2

See how simple these inexpensive connectors work and how much time they will save you. I bought the connectors for about $7 a box that has 50. My layout took about 125. This is still from my first video session, so I am sorry about items of interest not fully in the shot at times. I promise, in the coming weeks, I will have much better results. I just wanted to make sure I captured this on video to help others. I kept reading about these things, and saw them, but I had no clue how to use them. The ones I used I have 14 gauge wire for the bus, and 18 gauge wire for the feeder. These connectors can be used for the middle of the wire, end to end even connecting two parallel wires.

HD video: Very realistic model railroad with awful track .wmv

The footage shows awful track - that works! - on a model railroad featuring 90's era CSX. Two main segments are shown - handlaid yard trackage, and a mainline attempt at realistic jointed rail. The layout is a small one on an outdoor porch, so when you hear the sound of crickets in the mix, that is actually real. All of the trackage, scenery, equipment, and weathering was last worked on some 6 years ago, when I was in my teens. The layout has actually been dormant for 6 years with stuff stored on top and cats sleeping on the foliage. I revived it to take a record of the best portions. Most of the yard tracks are handlaid n-scale rail on tiny wooden ties, with ample kinks. The yard lead and siding are even more deliberately designed to cause trouble. I put cardboard shims under the middle 30' ft. of each scale 40' ft section of rail, and then spiked the joints down to create the characteristic bowed effect of poorly maintained jointed rail. You'll notice that this is done with N-scale rail on a curved piece of track that heads into a curve switch - I have no idea how the trains stay on the track! The joints are more pronounced on the siding track shown at the end of the video, which is laid with cut 40'scale code 83 rail laid on plastic ties. I intended to film the manifest leaving and some more switching, but ran out of time. Hopefully next time I visit I can capture some more. This video is incredibly misleading about the overall railroad, though, as it is really the ...

Soldering Rails on an HO Model Railroad Layout - Wiring Part 1

This is my very first instructional video on building my model train layout. I know it is not perfect, I have things running out of the shot, and some other issues, but this was done with a Canon Digital still cam that takes videos. If I get a good response, I am going to do more details on how I build my layout. I learned a lot in this first video, and how to make the rest much better, plus I am shopping for a good digital camera to make them oh so sweet! This video is about how to prepare and wire your model train layout above the main board. A lot of people wire their layout below the main board, and they crawl under it, but I cannot since I am in a wheelchair. So I have wired this on the table, but it will be all below the landscape. All of the wires will feed back to a main panel, so I can make changes or additions on the fly, from a simple panel. I will be putting wires all throughout the layout, for stuff I have, and for future use, that way, I can pull out wires when I need them for new cool stuff. This layout is going to have automated crossing gates, a wig wag signal, and oh, so much more. Follow me in my journey while I build this cool layout with lots of bells and whistles, literally!!

Model Trains

If you are a fan of G scale model trains, the LGB model train display at Living Desert in Palm Springs is a must-see attraction. California travel expert Veronica Hill of www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com tours one of the best examples of model train layouts in California. This adorable train set features more than 3000 feet of track and the world's largest G-scale wooden trestle. You'll be charmed as seven unique trains chug by old mining towns, below Mount Rushmore and past the historic Wigwam Motel. One of my favorite parts of track follows the Grand Canyon Railway from Williams Depot to the Grand Canyon South Rim, where passengers are dropped off at the historic El Tovar hotel. Nearby, above the rushing Colorado River, you'll find a cluster of Indian Cliff Dwellings and Navajo hogans. Next time you're in Southern California, don't miss this fun model train exhibit. It's sure to captivate the entire family. LGB Model Train Exhibit The Living Desert 47-900 Portola Avenue, Palm Desert, CA 92260 760-346-5694 www.livingdesert.org

Layout on PBS show "Tracks Ahead"

This is a video segment that was shot and produced by the PBS show "Tracks Ahead" for their upcoming season which airs January 2009. There are 14 shows (1 each week, check showtimes in your area), and each show has 4 segments, all dealing with TRAINS! This particular segment on my railroad was shot by "Tracks Ahead" in April of 2008 during the G Scale National Convention which was held in the Phoenix area. I think the segment turned out really nice and I would like to share it with you, 4 months before it airs on PBS. By the way, the young man and three small kids are my son and his three children (my grandkids), and they have a great love for trains just like me. They love to come over and play trains with me! They will probably inherit this wonderful layout when I am long gone. I hope you enjoy this video. If you have any comments about what you see, please feel free to contact me. Have fun!
