2-Part Mold Star® 15 Mold | Mold Making Minute from Smooth-On

www.smooth-on.com for more mold making and casting videos, galleries, and materials. Mold Making Minute: 2-Part Mold Making The original model is a plastic sphere. The 2-part mold should be split along the horizontal axis. Process Overview 1: One half of model is embedded in clay 2: The first half of the mold is poured and allowed to fully cure 3: The mold is turned over and clay is removed 4: Release agent is sprayed to prevent bonding 5: The second half of the mold is poured The mold is allowed to fully cure prior to demolding. Making the First Half Build a mold box. Seal seams with hot glue. Secure with a mold strap. The model must first be partially embedded in clay. Begin by building a clay bed inside the box. Press the model into the clay bed until only the top half is exposed. Use more clay to fill in any open spaces. Level the clay surface to the model's midpoint. Flatten and smooth the clay surface. Embed small acorn nuts in the clay; reason: creates registration keys between mold halves. Mold Star 15 1:1 Low Viscosity Platinum Silicone Dispense equal amounts 1A:1B by volume. Dispense parts A and B into mixing container. Mix parts A and B as directed. Slowly pour into one corner of the mold box. Pour 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) over model's high point. Allow Mold Star 15 to cure. Making the Second Half Begin by removing the mold box. Turn the mold over and remove the clay. Do not remove the model from the mold. Carefully remove the acorn nuts without removing the model ...

Mold Making and Casting: Casting R2 Rigid Foam

Here are 2 methods for achieving a good matte, paintable surface on rigid, urethane foam. Both baby-powder and primer (sprayed into the mold and allowed to dry) may be used to create a cast part with a matte surface for easy painting. New Prime-it primer may also be used to simplify the painting process.

Mold making basics: Silicone Block Mold

Block mold explanation. This is the most basic mold method for silicone rubber. This is a good method when speed is more important than overall cost. We used 73-45 platinum silicone for this particular mold. A cut block mold like this works best with rubber that is shore A20 or higher. This means a medium rubber. Soft rubber such as Gel-10 would be too soft and would distort at the seams.

Types of RTV Mold Rubber for Mold Making and Casting, Pros & Cons

www.smooth-on.com to see more video tutorials and image galleries. Examining the different types of RTV mold rubber available for mold making and casting from Smooth-On. Advantages of Latex * Least expensive mold rubber available. * Very elastic, thin-walled and strong. * Lasts a long time. * Offers good abrasion resistance. * Good for making glove molds. Disadvantages of Latex * Strong ammonia smell. * Can only be brushed onto an original. * Many coats are necessary. * Can take up to two weeks to make mold. * Shrinkage. Casting with Latex * Good for casting concrete, wax or plaster. * Generally not used for casting urethane, polyester, or epoxy resins, or low-temp metal alloys. Advantages of Polysulfide * Soft, stretchy, and durable. * Last a very long time. * Moderate cost. * Will cure against water clay or clays containing sulfur. Disadvantages of Polysulfide * Accurate gram scale to weigh components. * Offensive odor. * May stain white plaster during casting. Casting with Polysulfide * Good for casting plaster or wax only. * Will not handle concrete, resins, or low-temp metal alloys. Advantages of Silicone Rubber * Best release properties of all the mold rubbers. * Model surface preparation minimal nor not necessary. * Release agent for casting often not necessary. * Most heat resistance to high temperatures. * Can cast low-tempmetal alloys such as tin and pewter. * High tear resistance. * Knotty tear propagation. * Very good chemical resistance. * Longest mold life ...

Reusable Mold Making Material, Making parts without the cost.

Here is a short demonstration of the use of ComposiMold. Low cost, easy to use, and reuse. ComposiMold is a reusable mold making material that works by melting and pouring. Many casts can be performed using the same mold. ComposiMold is good for the mold maker and craft artist because it can be reused to make different molds without worrying about wasting mold making material (such as urethanes, silicones, or Alginate). ComposiMold is an excellent material for those wanting to learn and become involved in sculpting, modeling, and mold making without having to worry about mistakes or wasting material. ComposiMold is flexible, rubbery, molding material that can be melted poured and reused. This material is a thermoplastic mold making material that is great for small mold parts using many different casting materials including plaster, cement, epoxy, polyurethane, and others. ComposiMold can be used for molds, mold making and as a resin. www.ComposiMold.com for more information on ComposiMold. www.ComposiTherm.com to order your own ComposiMold

www.smooth-on.com for more information about Smooth-On silicone rubbers. Making a Brush-On Mold with Rebound 25 Liquid Silicone Rubber (Part 1 of 2) For this demonstration we are going to use a small plastic model. Step One: Secure Model to Baseboard Hot-melt glue is used to secure model to baseboard. Step Two: Measure and Mix Rebound 25 Silicone Rubber Measure equal amounts of Part A and Part B. Combine Parts A and B into a mixing container. Parts A and B are mixed thorougly for at least 3 minutes. No color streaks indicates liquid rubber material is well mixed. Step Three: Apply First Layer "Detail Coat" A thin first layer ensures minimal bubble entrapment in the finished mold. Use brush to work rubber into fine detail. Do not over-apply rubber. Create rubber flange: cover baseboard at least 3 inches (7.6 cm) out from the base of model. Ensure thorough coverage: check model carefully for missed areas. Mix and apply more rubber if necessary. Let the first coat cure for a about 60 minutes at room temperature until tacky. Tacky = Sticky to the touch by does not come off onto glove. Mold Maker's Tip Touch rubber off model. If rubber comes off onto your glove, it is not ready for the next layer. Rubber is tacky and ready to receive next layer of rubber. Step Four: More material is measured and mixed for the second, thicker coat Dispense equal amounts of Parts A and B. Mix thoroughly for 3 minutes. No color streaks indicates material is well mixed. Step 5: Apply Second Layer ...
