Mono Lake, California
Mono Lake is a hypersaline/alkaline lake located east of California's Sierra Nevada, at the western edge of the Great Basin. Dissolved salts in the runoff from Eastern Sierra streams are trapped at Mono Lake. Mono Lake's water is now about 2.5 times saltier than the ocean and eighty times more alkaline. In 1941, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power began to divert fresh waters which would normally flow into Mono Lake. The water diversion eventually resulted in a drop of 45 ft in lake level, from 6417 ft in 1941 to 6372 ft in 1981. As a result of the drop, once-submerged tufa towers became exposed.

from: Gobi The Desert [EP] (1999) Monolake is Robert Henke Monolake is an open project dedicated to computer generated music, founded in 1995 by Robert Henke and Gerhard Behles. We were impressed and influenced by Minimal Techno music and Drum&Bass and at the same time discovered the sonic richness and sophistication of academic computer music. These poles became the source and inspiration for our own creations. Our first releases on the highly acclaimed Berlin Techno label Chain Reaction, an offspring of Basic Channel, brought us some public attention. Due to our involvement with the Elektronische Studio der Technischen Universitat Berlin we also had the chance to do comissioned works for occations like "50 years of Music Concrete" and numerous other projects. The first Album from 1997, titled Hongkong, combined processed environmental sounds captured during the International Computer Music Conferernce 1996 in Hong Kong with synthesized timbres. It became the blueprint for a specific Monolake style which is often permutating complex rhythmical structures interacting with rich textural elements, providing depth and color. Gobi. The desert', a 34 minute epic track from 1999 was completly done in our own software, mostly Max/MSP but also with the beta version of Native Instruments Reaktor, since Gerhard Behles wrote the sampling and re-synthesis part of it. Dedicated to the original Native Americans of Yosemite, Mono Lake and Hetch Hetchy, the Yosemite-Mono Lake Paiute people. Every photo is of Paiutes in Yosemite. Chief Tenaya, who was born at Mono Lake, took several hundred of our people to live in Yosemite. There Chief Tenaya established the Paiute Colony of Ahwahnee after many of the original Ahwahnees died of a diease that was brought to this land. Sample taken from Mono Lake, California. Viewed with a Swift FM-31 Field Microscope and Nikon Coolpix 885 at 400X. Mono Lake is a soda lake [sometimes called an "alkali lake"] with a high salt content and a high pH. Such water is toxic to humans and most animals, yet a large population of microorganisms lives in Mono Lake. The algal cells are similar to Chlorella and coated the bottom of the shallows. Numbers of these Amoebae were found, busily munching the algal cells.

Just add SUNSHINE! I didn't even dare to have a background music of any kind, as it would've spoiled the real magic... The whole landscape changes as sunlight slowly "sculptures" the morning colors of a brand new day. It's a very soothing and pleasant experience at a place where nature is constantly at work creating one of a kind, one at a time only, breathtaking masterpieces of art.
