Richard Dawkins On Morality

I have been attacked on this subject an awful lot and I find it so very fascinating that 'religious' people just do not understand that I can possess any kind of morality as I have no God to guide me. Absolute codshit! I live my life as a good person, because I want to, not because I fear God's wrath or an eternal punishment in Hell. I do not lie, I do not cheat and believe it or not, all because that is what I CHOOSE. I know right from wrong. It is in the best interests of Humankind to 'get along'. If we all killed each other off then we wouldn't be able to carry on generation after generation. Killing each other and doing harm goes against all of Evolution! It is increasingly disturbing that people of many religions seem to be exhibiting the Atheist = No Morals attitude AS IF without God there is a moral vacuum. I have heard first-hand Christians say that without God everyone would be rapists and child molesters because they definitely would if they weren't obeying some higher law. This is CODSHIT - morals only have real meaning when they come from a personal code, not a dusty old 2000 year old (and therefore extremely out of date) book. If you had no 'God' to guide you would you be a rampant killer?

Morality Without God

Atheists often hear the question, "How can you be moral without God?" The real question is, "How can a moral person accept God?" If the scriptures are true, God sets a terrible example for Goodness.

Justice: What's The Right Thing To Do? Episode 01 "THE MORAL SIDE OF MURDER"

PART ONE: THE MORAL SIDE OF MURDER If you had to choose between (1) killing one person to save the lives of five others and (2) doing nothing even though you knew that five people would die right before your eyes if you did nothing—what would you do? What would be the right thing to do? Thats the hypothetical scenario Professor Michael Sandel uses to launch his course on moral reasoning. After the majority of students votes for killing the one person in order to save the lives of five others, Sandel presents three similar moral conundrums—each one artfully designed to make the decision more difficult. As students stand up to defend their conflicting choices, it becomes clear that the assumptions behind our moral reasoning are often contradictory, and the question of what is right and what is wrong is not always black and white. PART TWO: THE CASE FOR CANNIBALISM Sandel introduces the principles of utilitarian philosopher, Jeremy Bentham, with a famous nineteenth century legal case involving a shipwrecked crew of four. After nineteen days lost at sea, the captain decides to kill the weakest amongst them, the young cabin boy, so that the rest can feed on his blood and body to survive. The case sets up a classroom debate about the moral validity of utilitarianism—and its doctrine that the right thing to do is whatever produces "the greatest good for the greatest number."

Both agree that morality exists independently of divinity. ----- Journalist Susan Jacoby, philosopher Colin McGinn, and theologian Denys Turner explore questions such as: Is humanism another kind of religion? Is it religion's evolutionary future, rather than just one of several alternatives? What light does the recent scientific study of religion throw on these possibilities? Can't Have It Both Ways

Some people don't even realize what they believe. If you didn't understand the end, that's okay. I realize I was being more than a bit silly and vague. Many theists have used dishonest argumentation with me, which no doubt causes them to suspect that I, too, am using dishonest argumentation (projection), which can ironically cause them to be skeptical about the wrong things. That was the point of the misdirection and subsequent alien. Pretty pretty please check out my new channel!!! www.youtube.com I believe it is wrong to harm others. That is my opinion, which is subject to change under different circumstances. Furthermore, even my definition of "harm" is subjective. While I believe indoctrination of children is causing harm, there are religious people who see it as vitally important. Our opinions don't get to decide ultimate truth, though. So who is objectively correct? Neither of us. It isn't so simply black or white. Is it better to know a harmful truth or to believe a comforting lie? Which is moral? If the vast majority of us agree upon what is good or bad for human beings, for all intents and purposes, that can be like objective morality, and I could see how one could justifiably call it objective, but that's not entirely accurate, and I don't wish to call it objective because that implies transcendence, which is baseless. When something is objective, it is true independent of our minds, yet our minds are a requisite of morality. For morality to be objective, you <b>...</b>

Scientific Thinking And Moral Philosophy

Science & Reason on Facebook: tinyurl.com Richard Dawkins @ Big Think: While science is indelibly distinct from the field of ethics, Richard Dawkins believes that there are a number of ways in which its facts and reasoning could greatly benefit our ability to understand and repair the worlds suffering. --- Please subscribe to Science & Reason: • www.YouTube.com • www.YouTube.com • www.YouTube.com • www.YouTube.com --- Question: Can science shed light on any moral issues? Richard Dawkins: Science is not in the business of shedding light on moral debates, but I think it can do sometimes -- the whole subject of moral philosophy, of examining moral questions in a logical way to expose inconsistencies, for example. When you're looking at moral questions, so-called moral questions, like abortion or euthanasia, you can show that people who take a very strong absolutist line may be being inconsistent with themselves because they are taking a strong line on one thing while at the same time inconsistently not taking a similarly strong line on another. So that would be a scientific way of thinking; it's not science per se. It's moral philosophy, but it's a kind of scientific way of thinking. But also I think scientific facts can illuminate moral debate. In the case of abortion again, for example, a scientist might contribute to the debate information about at what point during the development of an embryo the nervous system comes into being. And presumably, before the nervous system <b>...</b>

Richard Dawkins - The Shifting Moral Zeitgeist

Richard Dawkins speaks about the shifting moral zeitgeist. How do our ideas of what is moral (racism, sexism) change so drastically over relatively short amounts of time in history? It is clearly not from scripture or from a closer reading of religion. Indeed, it is despite of scripture that women are allowed equal treatment in our society, for example. Patricia Churchland - Morality and the Mammalian Brain

Self-caring neural circuitry embodies self-preservation values, and these are values in the most elemental sense. Whence caring for others? Social problem-solving, including policy-making, is probably an instance of problem-solving more generally, and draws upon the capacity, prodigious in humans, to envision consequences of a planned action. In humans, it also draws upon the capacity for improving upon current practices and technologies. Unlike other mammals, humans have developed highly complex language, and highly complex cultures. This means that our sociality, and consequently ours systems of ethical values, have become correspondingly complex. Professor Patricia Smith Churchland is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, San Diego, and an adjunct Professor at the Salk Institute. Her current work focuses on morality and the social brain. She has been President of the American Philosophical Association and the Society for Philosophy and Psychology, and won a MacArthur Prize in 1991 and the Rossi Prize in 2008.

Objective Morality vs. Christianity [William Lane Craig]

I don't think that arguing against objective morality, or arguing FOR it but towards a naturalistic source, are the only options. Take a look at what happens when we (even hypothetically) concede that it has a theistic basis! It certainly doesn't do Christianity any favors. SCRIPT IS AT www.nonstampcollector.com OTHERS at www.nonstampcollector.com Why couldn't an objective morality simply make sense? Why does looking at morality through the lens of Christianity make such LITTLE sense? Well, it's obvious why - Christianity and its god is nonsense. There could be no clearer sign that Christianity is a man-made bunch of bollocks, than to look at its claims on objective morality. All these special pleadings about context and new vs old covenants are the dying gasps of a belief system that before long won't have anyone even TRYING to make it make sense. You'd be better off trying to argue that Joseph Fritzl is the greatest father that the world has ever known (within a certain context). Look elsewhere for an objective moral law giver, other than Christianity, for the god that you are convinced must exist. It can't hurt - and the bible has caused enough problems on this planet, with its contradictory and wicked claims and commands. Don't support, or give cover, to those who want us to base our modern societies around that absurd mess of a book. Be honest with yourself, and reject it, as people do who take a real, open, honest look at what it says. It isn't divine, it is <b>...</b>

What is Morality?

This is part one of my new series on morality. Before we can really discuss anything, we first need to establish a decent, all-encompassing working definition of morality, so we can build from there, which is the focus of this video.

What is morality?

What is morality? Does morality really exist, or is it a fantasy we made up - like the gods - to comfort ourselves and control others?

The Evolution of Morality (1-5)

This was the keynote speech on Darwin Day 2010 at Broward College in South Florida. I was supposed to land in Ft. Lauderdale a full day before I did, and I expected to use that time locked in my hotel room rehearsing and revising my presentation. But record snow falls in Dallas and Atlanta caused my flights to be cancelled, rescheduled, and rerouted through other airlines, all amidst the threat that both airports might have to close. Consequently, I spent all my prep time flitting between gates and calling sponsors trying to secure another flight. I ended up getting in absurdly late, and missing sleep. Then I went before a hundred scientists trying to freely recite a 6000 word speech that I refused to just stand there and read, although there were a couple moments that I wish I had done that. :-P

Atheist Comedy - God's Moral Framework

It's hard to believe that people think our laws are based on the bible. It is quite clear that the commandments, especially the revised ones (NONE of which are laws today), are the meaningless traditions of an ancient, superstitious people - not an objective moral code sent down by some mysterious, all-powerful, never-seen being. Furthermore, I think it's comical the way the Jews were frequently seeing the great "God Himself", to be revered and feared, but then they constantly turned around to stab Him in the back - so unrealistic. The bible is an ancient Jerry Bruckheimer movie. Music by: Kevin Macleod @ www.incompetech.com
