But now the insatiable global demand for the oil is threatening this 'tree of life'. The argan tree not only sustains the local people of South-West Morocco, it is also key to the local ecosystem. But its miracle oil, known as 'liquid gold', is now a must-have for Western cosmetics and the booming demand is destroying the forest. "Without that tree, the whole population will migrate to the cities to find work." With no simple solution in sight, the scramble for profit poses a bleak future for an ancient way of life. LongTreks Morocco - Episode 7: Gorge Du Dades

Last episode, the crew journeyed into the Saharan dunes for a romantic evening with camels and two days lathered in sunscreen. A three day break altogether from skating makes them eager to get back on the road, starting from Ourzazate, traveling east through Valee Du Dades, coincidentally for the Festival of the Roses in El Kelaa M'gouna. Passing off the festival and opting to skate the Gorge du Dades, one of the most radical designs in roadwork, the Long Treks team skates into the massive Gorge. Unfortunately, Adam is the last of the three to be struck with a powerful and tormenting stomach flu. Need not to go into detail, Aaron and Paul enjoy a day of skating switchback after switchback in the famous Moroccan Gorge.

Morocco... Spirit Of World

is a country located in North Africa. It has a population of more than 36 million and an area of 710850 km², and also primarily administers the disputed region of the Western Sahara. It is part of the Maghreb region, in addition to Tunisia, Algeria, Mauritania, and Libya, with which it shares cultural, historical and linguistic ties. Morocco is a constitutional monarchy with an elected parliament. The King of Morocco holds vast executive powers, including dissolving parliament at will. Executive power is exercised by the government but more importantly by the king himself. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the two chambers of parliament, the Assembly of Representatives and the Assembly of Councillors. The king can also issue decrees called dahirs which have the force of law. Parliamentary elections were held in Morocco on 7 September 2007, and were considered by some neutral observers to be mostly free and fair; although voter turnout was estimated to be 37%, the lowest in decades. The political capital is Rabat, and the largest city is Casablanca; other large cities include Marrakesh, Tetouan, Tangier, Salé, Fes, Agadir, Meknes and Oujda.

Tangier - Tanger , Marruecos, MOROCCO !

Tangier, also Tangiers Tifinagh Tanja, archaic Berber name: Tingi, Arabic: طنجة Ṭanǧah) is a city in northern Morocco with a population of about 1.400,000 (2012 census). It lies on the North African coast at the western entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic Ocean off Cape Spartel. It is the capital of the Tangier-Tetouan Region and of the Tangier-Asilah Larache prefecture of Morocco. The history of Tangier is very rich due to the historical presence of many civilizations and cultures starting from the 5th century BC. Between the period of being a Phoenician town to the independence era around the 1950s, Tangier was a place—and, sometimes a refuge—for many cultures. However, it was not until 1923 that Tangier was attributed an international status by foreign colonial powers, thus becoming a destination for many Europeans, Americans and others. The city is currently undergoing rapid development and modernization. Projects include new 5-star hotels along the bay, a modern business district called Tangier City Centre, a new airport terminal and a new soccer stadium. Tangier's economy is also set to benefit greatly from the new Tanger-Med port. Tangier's sport team IRT (or Ittihad Riadi de Tanger) is the main football club and has the most followers. Tangier will be one of the host cities for the 2015 African Nations Cup soccer championship, played at the new Ibn Batouta Stadium and in other cities in Morocco www.facebook.com

Morocco home to Africa's biggest mall

The Moroccan city of Casablanca is the country's largest, so it should come as no surprise that it is now home of the largest mall, not only in Morocco itself, but on the entire African continent. The project is a joint venture with Moroccan group Aksal and Al Jedaie group of Saudi Arabia; it is worth $242 million and spans 10 hectares of land in the main port city overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The goal of the mall is to draw in around 14 million visitors each year, consequentially creating 5000 direct jobs and 21000 indirect ones, according to developers. "The main idea was to build a mall for people where all Moroccans and tourists who come to Morocco can feel as if the mall is becoming part of their experience. For Moroccans, it is almost like an extension of their living room. For tourists, it is another reason to say that Morocco is quite a unique country. It is not only the old traditions of the Medina, the surprise, the souks, the markets that you have there with their smells and the spices, the beautiful colors, but is also a sign of modernity," said mall architect Davide Padoa. The mall houses about 600 international brands, from high-end fashion shops to restaurants, as well as an aquarium, an ice rink, and the continent's first IMAX cinema. Strawberry festival in Morocco informs producers of better methods

The second International Strawberry Festival came to close on Sunday in the Moroccan sea resort of Moulay Bousselham after having attracted participants from across the globe, including Peru, the birthplace of strawberries. "Through this fair, we seek to improve both the quality and the production of strawberries and also to make small farmers aware of the necessity to organise themselves in the shape of co-operatives or associations so they could benefit from exporting their product and the high earnings of exportations," said Chaoui Belassal, chairman of Moulay Bousselham community council. The festival spotlighted the fruit from Morocco's Gharb (West) region and acquainted farmers with advanced irrigation methods and the hazards of misusing pesticides and insecticides. Academics such as Professor Abderrahman Tenkoul of Ibn Tofail University said their involvement was crucial to the festival as scientific research could uncover ways to improve quality standards while safeguarding consumer health. The Nalsya Foundation for Development, Environment, and Social Action, a local non-governmental organization, collaborated with Moulay Bousselham communal council in coming up with newer, more efficient irrigation techniques, which could potentially save up to 35 percent of water usage. Over 3300 hectares have been devoted to strawberry farming in Morocco, mostly in the Northwestern area of the country. A large proportion of harvest is exported, and the strawberry industry ...

Saffron: Morocco's mystic spice

The small town of Taliouine in southern Morocco is home to the country's largest saffron fields. In many countries saffron is revered as a mystical spice with religious connotations. Despite being known as one of the world's most expensive spices, farmers earn only a small profit from huge sales around the world. The production of one single kilogram of saffron comes from 150000 flowers. The delicate task for separating the stamen from the flower is predominantly done by women. Depending on the quality and quantity of saffron one gram can cost on average US$6.28. For centuries saffron has been cultivated in the region and valued for its rich flavor as well as healing qualities. The yellow spice is also used as a coloring agent to enhance fabric and food. Unique purple flowers cover the southern Moroccan fields which produce the stamens from where saffron is derived. Efforts are being made in Taliouine to ensure farmers get their fair share of the proceeds for cultivating the spice. Moroccan authorities are encouraging farmers to plant further saffron crocus flowers to increase the local economy through escalating exports which will bring extra profit back into the North African country. The local branch of the Department of Agriculture created the initiative to offer support to thousands of farmers. Free seeds, water and advice were provided to help farmers produce more. Ishmael El-Hamdi said the saffron grown in this area is highly rated because the soil and climate ...
