Spectacular video from "Can mosquitoes fly in the rain?" authored by Andrew Dickerson, Peter Shankles, Nihar Madhavan, and David Hu (ArXiv 13 Oct 2011) arxiv.org Abstract: Collisions with raindrops are one of many obstacles insects face during flight. In this fluid dynamics video, we present a series of high-speed films of impacts between mosquitoes and raindrops. We also present drop impacts upon insect mimics, which are unsupported styrofoam balls of the same mass as mosquitoes. High-speed videography and particle tracking during collision are employed to determine the insect position versus time. We determine the magnitude of acceleration by considering the momentum transfer and impact duration. Experiments with live mosquitoes indicate a surprising ability to quickly recover flight post-collision, despite accelerations of 30-300 gravities over durations of 1 ms.

Without mosquito control, the quality of life in California would be greatly reduced. This video beautifully illustrates the reasons why. See the wave of West Nile virus from New York to California in just five short years. Emerging diseases are real and will always be a threat, just like West Nile virus was when it emerged in New York in 1999, and just like Dengue fever is that recently emerged in Florida. As long as mosquitoes exist and as long as there is water, there will always be mosquito-borne diseases. Mosquito control districts are independent special districts - public health agencies - created by the people and for the people, and are responsible for the health and welfare of every Californian. Mosquito-borne diseases affect anyone of any age and are largely avoidable with public education, mosquito surveillance, and mosquito control. Mosquito control is essential to the well being of our families, friends and our constituents. Together, your support and our mosquito control expertise can protect them. Mosquito control matters.

Vanderbilt University researchers say they're working to unleash an insect repellent on mosquitoes that's more powerful than DEET. The discovery could one day be effective in reducing the spread of mosquito-borne diseases, such as malaria. It's based on a mosquito's sense of smell. With early support from the National Science Foundation, Vanderbilt University biologist Laurence Zwiebel researched which mosquito genes are linked to odor reception. Since then, he's discovered a separate odor sensor on a mosquito's antennae. According to Zwiebel, mosquitoes use odor sensors to sniff out humans and other tasty animals to bite. The new insect repellent compound takes advantage of his discovery by overwhelming the mosquito's odor sensors, thus scaring them away.

The Mosquito was one of the most remarkable planes of World War Two. The Mosquito in full the De Havilland DH-98 Mosquito was a twin-engine, two-seat bomber that was modified to serve as a fighter which could operate during the day or at night or as a photo reconnaissance plane. In whatever capacity, the Mosquito proved to be immensely successful for a wooden plane. The first Mosquitoes were powered by two 1250 horsepower Merlin engines. To enhance its aerodynamics, all tail surfaces were elliptical and the wings were sharply tapered. The original Mosquitoes were designed to internally carry four 500 lb bombs. The first flights of the Mosquito confirmed what the design team had hoped for the fastest operational plane of its day. The Mks II, III ands IV could fly at 380 mph - 19 mph faster than the Battle of Britain Spitfire and 50 mph faster than the Hawker Hurricane.

WHAT DOES THIS VIDEO MEAN?: First off... there's not enough kung-fu videos on YouTube! LOL, but really the other day, the mosquitoes were so bad in the Everglades that when we stepped out of the car we could almost feel ourselves losing weight from all the blood loss. We were just at a rest stop along the freeway and didn't expect to get attacked. I have also been playing with a new animation program and decided to try it out in public for the first time. What do you think? More animation? WHY WAS MY SLEEVE ROLLED UP?: The reason I had my sleeve up wasn't because I was trying to show off the tattoo... I actually filmed this video the day after I got my tattoo and I didn't want to get any of the slimy medication on my shirt. If you have a tattoo you'll know what I mean. I'm currently in Washington DC now (August 7th, 2008)... You'd know that if you saw the funny pictures I posted on Twitter! ; ) Thanks for watching and commenting! I wish I had more time to respond to you all... Seriously... THANK YOU : ) -Cory Williams

To complete this How-To you will need: Repellent containing DEET Yellow light bulbs A fan Mosquito fish or a larvicide A carbon dioxide trapping device Insecticide Warning: Always use extreme caution when using insecticides, and follow the directions on the label. Step 1: Get rid of standing water To get rid of mosquitoes, you must eliminate any standing water near your home—that's where they breed. Things like flowerpots, recycling bins, puddles, or even a overturned lid can result in thousands of mosquitoes. If you have a birdbath, change the water every couple days, be sure to treat swimming pools, & ask your neighbors to do the same. Tip: Stock ponds with mosquito fish, which feed on the larvae, or use a mosquito larvicide product. Step 2: Mow Mow your lawn frequently and try to reduce vegetation around your house, which is where mosquitoes live. Step 3: Seal off your home Make sure all of your windows and doors are ...

I'm Alex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Health Report from, voaspecialenglish.com | http Israeli researchers say they have developed a substance that attracts and kills mosquitoes infected with the malaria parasite. However, the sweet smelling substance is said to be harmless to people and animals.Scientists at Hebrew University in Jerusalem developed the sugary bait by combining fruit juice oils and boric acid. The fruit juice gets the attention of the mosquitoes. Boric acid kills the insects when they eat it. The scientists took the boric acid sweet bait to the West African nation of Mali. They sprayed it on plants near man-made ponds. Villagers use water from the ponds during the dry season. But the area is also home to Anopheles gambiae, the mosquito that carries the most deadly form of malaria. The researchers also placed a sweet-smelling spray on grasses near other ponds. But that spray contained no boric acid. Both substances also contained a substance that would mark any mosquito that came in contact with it. This way the scientists could count the mosquitoes that fed on the bait.Yosef Schlein is an expert on insects that affect human health. Professor Schlein led the sweet bait research. He says thirty-eight days of results show the sweet boric acid bait proved very effective at killing mosquitoes. He said in Mali eighty percent of the females and ninety percent of the males were killed. But the area is full of little ponds, so it is impossible to stop ...

Scientific Breakthrough In Mosquito Control!!! Developed with technical assistance from NASA (USA) with 17 years of research and development. Declared by PhD Entomologists to be the very best mosquito control solution ever developed, no other products or machines on the market can kill as many mosquitoes or reduce mosquito populations in a one-acre area as effectively or quickly as the Mosquito Killing System (MKS). Disease/mosquito tracking agencies has been tested the system in Australia, UK, Asia, Canada and USA, and thus these tests have all proven the MKS to be the most effective mosquito solution available. The MKS also carries the European CE quality mark and is approved by the US Underwriters' Laboratory and displays the UL safety logo, which guarantees the safety of the electric system. Unlike the traditional method of pesticides spraying or fogging which can be hazardous to people with compromised immune systems, cancer survivors, people with allergies, children and the elderly, the MKS produces no chemicals, pesticides, propane, octenol and has no odour. Meanwhile, Duke University Medical Center researchers have found that prolonged use of repellents containing the insecticide DEET can impair functioning in parts of the human brain. They and other experts from the World Health Organization, the US EPA, the US Department of Defense and health officials from several states warn never to put a product containing DEET on an infant's or child's skin.
