Be Safe, Be Seen - Stuart O'Grady's safer riding tips - Riding Smarts

It's amazing to learn how many people are getting into riding these days! At least 1 in 3 South Australians rode a bike last year. But with so many of us out on the roads, there's a flipside. Each year around $20 million in compulsory third-party insurance claims are made because of cycling crashes. That's huge -- let alone the emotional cost. The Motor Accident Commission (MAC) has teamed up Stuart O'Grady to promote being safe and being seen while riding. This video looks at how the way we ride and share the roads with others can help us to be seen, and be safe.

TAC Campaign - 20 year Anniversary retrospective montage "Everybody Hurts" music by REM TV ad

On December 10th 1989 the first TAC commercial went to air. In that year the road toll was 776; by last year 2008 it had fallen to 303. A five minute retrospective of the road safety campaigns produced by the TAC over the last 20 years has been compiled. The montage features iconic scenes and images from commercials that have helped change they way we drive, all edited to the moving song Everybody Hurts by REM. This campaign is a chance to revisit some of the images that have been engraved on our memories, remember the many thousands of people who have been affected by road trauma and remind us all that for everyones sake; please, drive safely. "Motorcycle Man" TAC Motorcycle Safety Campaign tv ad

March 2008, Protective Clothing Campaign For the first time in almost six years, the TAC launched a motorcycle safety campaign promoting the importance of protective clothing for all riders. The ad begins with the aftermath of a motorbike crash at the scene. We then see the victim lying in the operating theatre at the Austin Hospital with a Doctor talking to the audience about the mans injuries and how it could have been prevented. In the background the victim is moaning with pain as the nurses and doctors remove pieces of denim from his wounds. The public education campaign asked riders "What's between you and the operating theatre?". This campaign was developed to highlight the risks associated with riding without the appropriate protective clothing and focuses on two key rider groups; motorcyclists and scooter riders. The ads take on a reality television show feel similar to RPA, beginning with the aftermath of a road crash.

Connectsafe Wireless Vehicle Communication System - University of South Australia

Dedicated short range communications combines high reliability wireless communications and GPS, allowing cars to "talk" to each other and to roadside infrastructure such as traffic lights. This gives cars a three hundred and sixty degree awareness of nearby vehicles, even in situations where the driver cannot see them. Using vehicle position and speed information received from nearby cars, an onboard computer can warn the driver of hazardous situations, such as a vehicle running a red light or failing to give way. This helps avoid intersection collisions which are responsible for sixty percent of multi-vehicle crashes. The technology can also help prevent level crossing accidents. The system can alert drivers of a car braking ahead, even when the driver's vision is blocked by other cars or trucks. The system can also alert drivers to approaching emergency vehicles. Infrastructure to vehicle communications can warn drivers of roadworks and temporary reduced speed limits, for example in school zones. Real-time notification of roadworks, breakdowns and congestion help drivers to select alternate routes. ConnectSafe Adelaide is Australia's first field trial and on-road demonstration of dedicated short range communications for cooperative safety and traffic management.

TAC motorcycle ad critical review

The Transport Accident Commission in Victoria, Australia, recently released another 'you're all gonna die' motorcycle 'safety' TV ad. Here's our take on it: it's essentially a misguided and very expensive vilification of motorcycle riders, with numerous errors of fact. It seemed only fair to complete this review with what we see as the sub-text of the ad. Here is the original: www.youtube.com Posted Oct 2009

'The Cell' TAC's anti drug driving tv ad

The TAC launched a new public education campaign in July 2009 targeting occasional cannabis users. This campaign, spearheaded by a 90 second television commercial highlights the types of impairments that are experienced when you drive after taking cannabis and the impact that this can have on yourself and others. The effect of any drug varies from person to person. Some of the common effects of cannabis include impaired mental function such as the ability to concentrate and react in driving situations. The new advertisement depicts a drug driver whose driving skills are imparied. The impairments that he displays include stopping for longer than necessary at a stop sign, misjudging the road edge and going over the kerb, travelling on the midline of the roadway and lack of awareness when stopping in an unsafe environment. A recent report from the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (Kong. F, 2009) found that 60% of drug users had driven a motor vehicle in the last six months within one hour of taking any illicit drugs. Of the 61% reporting driving under the influence of drugs, 75% admitted to using ecstasy, 70% for amphetamine type stimulants* and 85% for cannabis. Furthermore, just over half of people who admitted to drug use while driving believed that they were not impaired in any way. Since random roadside drug testing began in December 2004, approximately 84562 tests have been conducted, with 1367 drivers caught drug driving. "If you drive on drugs You're out of ...

Vintage Car Safety Film: Anatomy of an Accident (1960s)

thefilmarchive.org DVD: www.amazon.com Automobile safety is the study and practice of vehicle design, construction, and equipment to minimize the occurrence and consequences of automobile accidents. (Road traffic safety more broadly includes roadway design. One of the first formal academic studies into improving car safety was by Cornell Aeronautical Labs of Buffalo, New York. The main conclusion of their extensive report is the crucial importance of seat belts and padded dashboards. Improvements in roadway and automobile designs have steadily reduced injury and death rates in all first world countries. Nevertheless, auto collisions are the leading cause of injury-related deaths, an estimated total of 1.2 million in 2004, or 25% of the total from all causes. Risk compensation limits the improvement that can be made, often leading to reduced safety where one might expect the opposite. When pregnant, women should continue to use seatbelts and airbags properly. A University of Michigan study found that "unrestrained or improperly restrained pregnant women are 5.7 times more likely to have an adverse fetal outcome than properly restrained pregnant women". If seatbelts are not long enough, extensions are available from the car manufacturer or an aftermarket supplier. Children present significant challenges in engineering and producing safe vehicles, because most children are significantly smaller and lighter than most adults.
