PAKISTAN MOTORWAY

Problem overview: Meeting information requirements: This example shows the adverse impacts of a major motorway project on the socio-economic conditions of the people because an impact assessment had not been carried out prior to the construction of the highways. Background in summary: The Pakistan Motorway Project: Recognizing the need for high quality road net work in the country, the Prime Minister of Pakistan inaugurated Pakistan Motorway Project covering the whole of country: from Peshawar to Karachi and Karachi to Gawadar and Karachi to Quetta and Quetta to Iran. Magnitude of the project: It was a massive project involving 3 major river bridges, 8 interchanges, 27 flyovers, 17 bridges on canal, 39 bridges on drains and 4 overhead railway crossing, 183 subways and cattle creeps, 22 culverts on canals and 73 culverts on drains. Funding for the project: The project was approved by the National Highway Council headed by the Prime minister of Pakistan in 1992 with 60 percent financing by the Government of Pakistan and 40 percent financing through foreign loans. The project was completed in December 1997 at an estimated cost of Rs. 30.5 billion. Neglecting to do the EIA: Environmental Impact Assessment report of the project required under section 8 of the then in vogue Pakistan Environmental Protection Ordinance, 1983 was neither prepared nor subjected to any review/approval process at the time of initiation, construction or even at completion stage of the project ...

Rebuilding Iberian motorways with slime mould

This video supplements the paper Adamatzky A. and Alonso-Sanz R. Rebuilding Iberian motorways with slime mould BioSystems (2011), in press. doi:10.1016/j.biosystems.2011.03.007 www.sciencedirect.com Abstract Plasmodium of a cellular slime mould \emph{Physarum polycephalum} is a unique living substrate proved to be efficient in solving many computational problems with natural spatial parallelism. The plasmodium solves a problem represented by a configuration of source of nutrinets by building an efficient foraging and intra-cellular transportation network. The transportation netwokrs developed by the plasmodium are similar to transport networks built by social insects and simulated trails in mutli-agent societies. In the paper we are attempting to answer the question ``How close plasmodium of \emph{Physarum polycephalum} approximates man-made motorway networks in Spain and Portugal, and what are the differences between existing motorway strucutre and plasmodium network of protoplasmic tubes?''. We cut agar plates in a shape of Iberian peninsula, place oat flakes at the sites of major urban areas and analyse the foraging network developed. We compare the plasmodial network with principle motorways and also analyse man-made and plasmodium networks in a framework of planar proximity graphs.

Pakistan Motorway - The National Pride

INTRODUCTION The Motorways of Pakistan are a series of international-standard, high-speed, limited-access highways in Pakistan, which are maintained and operated by the National Highway Authority. The first motorway in Pakistan was opened in November 1997 and, by April 2010, the total length of operational motorways in Pakistan was 632 km with another 233 km under construction and further planned. FEATURES Pakistan's motorways are either six-lanes or four-lanes with a universal minimum speed limit of 80 km/h and a maximum speed limit of 100 km/h for heavy transport vehicles and 120 km/h for light transport vehicles. They have a central median and are fenced on the outside for safety and prevention of unauthorized access by pedestrians, animals and slow-moving vehicles. Entry to all motorways in Pakistan are restricted to fast-moving vehicles only, including high-performance heavy bikes. Pedestrians, bicycles, low-performance motorcycles, animal-driven carriages and other slow-moving vehicles are not permitted on the motorways. By February 2010, operational motorways in Pakistan had a combined length of 632 km with another 233 km under construction and further planned. Pakistan's Motorways are part of Pakistan's National Trade Corridor Project, which aims to link Pakistan's three Arabian Sea ports, namely Karachi Port, Port Bin Qasim and Gwadar Port to the rest of the country and further north with Afghanistan, Central Asia and China.

This road serves as a cheap extension to the M42, hence the reason why it is featured on Pathetic Motorways. It is only 2 lanes each way and has no hard shoulder. There have been plans and rumours that it will be made into a motorway, but this hasn't happened and it still keeps it's "A" road name. The Secret Life of the Motorway - Part 1 (BBC 4 - 21 August 2007)

This series pays homage to Britain's motorways -- the people who built them, the people who use them and the people who risked their lives to stop them. Along the way, everything from early driving experiences and the joys of motorway services to the rise of the protest movement are re-lived. At just six miles long, the first stretch of motorway, the M6 Preston Bypass, was opened in 1958. For the first time, people could travel further, more easily and quicker than ever before, thanks to this groundbreaking "road revolution". This programme charts the beginning of Britain's love affair with motorways, meeting the engineers and builders who designed and built this first motorway, through to those who toiled to complete the most complex road intersection in the country -- Birmingham's Spaghetti Junction. The bizarre and often thrilling experience of driving on these new, fast roads is described by the people who were among the first to drive and work on them. But with no speed limit, no crash barriers between the carriageways and cars that weren't built for high speeds, the risk of accidents was high. To combat the dangers, the Motorway Code was introduced -- along with some rather amusing public information films to explain the "do's and dont's" of motorway driving.

George Galloway interviews Andrew Howard on 80mph motorway speed limit

Go to 2:57 for the interview. From BBC News: Climate change and road safety campaigners have criticised plans to increase the speed limit on English and Welsh motorways from 70mph to 80mph. Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said the current limit, introduced in 1965, was out of date due to "huge advances in safety and motoring technology". But the Green Party said the plan would increase carbon emissions. Stephen Joseph, from the Campaign for Better Transport, said it would lead to more accidents and casualties. He said in practice if you increase the limit to 80 then most people will drive at 90. The consultation begins this year with a view to raising the limit in 2013. Road safety charity Brake's chief executive Mary Williams said: "This is a selfish move that will achieve nothing other than carnage and is pandering to an uninformed few. "What is far more legitimate is the grief of families bereaved on Britain's motorways in horrendous pile-ups at high speed, and the rights of all UK citizens to have slower, not faster, speeds on roads to enable drivers to avoid collisions." She pointed to evidence that raising the limit would lead to more deaths. The Department for Transport says advances in technology have made cars much safer, contributing to a drop of more than 75% in the number of people killed on British roads since the 70mph limit was introduced. As a result, it says it is time to look again at whether the current limit is "still appropriate". A Scottish ...

The Secret Life of the Motorway - Part 2 (BBC 4 - 22 August 2007)

When the first British motorway opened in 1958, it seemed to promise a drive into a world of prosperity and freedom. This programme takes a journey through the weird and wonderful destinations these roads have taken people to -- from glamorous, early service stations to the out-of-town shopping centres that are now amongst Britain's largest leisure destinations. Before motorways, Britain was an unexplored isle for most people -- holidays were largely confined to just 200 seaside resorts at the end of a train line. The rise in car ownership and the burgeoning road network revolutionised this. Tourist destinations blossomed and the motorway journey itself, with its attendant rituals of travel sweets and I-Spy books, became an adventure. Such was the excitement surrounding the early motorways that service stations were as glamorous as Soho coffee bars -- Meccas for fine dining and teenagers in search of a 24-hour place to party. Even today, they hold an allure for some -- not just somewhere for a quick break, but a communal space for people to meet. The motorway network wasn't built to help holiday travel. They were created to serve business -- HGV drivers, travelling salesmen and commuters. Nearly 50 years on, sleepy country villages have been colonised, business parks have sprung up around junctions and vast distribution centres mushroomed in "golden" motorway triangles. The Secret Life of the Motorway - Part 3 (BBC 4 - 23 August 2007)

In 1958, the first British motorway opened with huge celebration, and, over the next decade, 1000 miles of road were built across open countryside to little opposition. Welcomed by all, they quickly relieved congestion. However, at the end of the Sixties, the detrimental effects of motorways became apparent and public opinion began to change. And, when the engineers turned their attention to solving London's mounting traffic problem, it became clear that building a motorway through the capital's densely populated streets would always destroy "someone's back garden". Protests against the Motorway Box -- a proposed elevated ring road built through the heart of London -- meant that urban motorways were no longer politically acceptable. In our cities, the brutal modernism of motorways quickly became a thing of the past. However, in the countryside, plans were still going ahead, culminating in the late Eighties with the Government's plan of "Roads for Prosperity" -- the biggest road-building plan since the Romans. For many people it was just too much, and when the Department of Transport began to build a motorway through Twyford Down, near Winchester, things soon came to a head. Forced evictions, pitched battles and radical young protestors grabbed the headlines and inspired numerous other protests around the country. And, when Labour came to power, the road programme was dropped. Featured contributions, in tonight's concluding programme of the series, range from the genteel ...

PAF fighter jets successfully undertake landings on Motorway during exercise High Mark 2010

PAF s' News Section paffalcons.com Pakistan Air Force (PAF) successfully validated its concept of fighter operations from motorway when its two fighter aircraft landed on a motorway. The historic landmark was achieved as part of the ongoing High Mark-2010 exercise. After landing, the aircraft were refuelled, rearmed and re-launched. While the point where the two aircraft touched down was not specified, it was believed to be somewhere on the Islamabad-Lahore motorway or that linking the capital with Peshawar. High Mark-2010, launched March 15, is the PAFs biggest war game in five years and covers the the entire country from Skardu in the north till the Arabian Sea in the south. According to a PAF spokesman, the ever changing geo-political environment in the region demands change in the employment concepts and doctrinal changes in the application of air power with emphasis on joint operations. High Mark-2010 would provide the PAF an opportunity to validate these concepts that are vital for the overall defence of the country, he added. To this end, the spokesman said, High Mark-2010 is aimed at conducting operations in a near-realistic tactical environment while integrating new inductions and providing role-oriented training to the combat and support elements of the force. The exercise is designed to achieve stipulated objectives with special emphasis on exposing PAF combat crew to simulated air battles based on contemporary concepts, he added. I-spy on the M5 motorway - and score some points.

This is a re-edited version of an earlier upload. We're travelling north-east on the M5 motorway and turning off at junction 19. This stretch of the M5 was built onto the side of the Gordano Valley. I-Spy the south-westbound lanes (on the right), getting higher and higher until they're some forty feet above us. As we drive uphill, there's an extra, fourth lane on the far right, to let faster traffic get past the slower traffic that's on the left. I-Spy where this extra lane comes to an end. It's clearly and repeatedly signed, but you'll see skid marks where the blind, the careless and the unwary have been caught out. I-Spy how well everyone drives and how no-one gets blocked. In this video, slower traffic is going at around 60mph on the left; traffic at the legal maximum of 70mph is in the middle lane; and in the outside lane traffic may be going at around eighty-plus. If you're not familiar with British motorways - as we come down the hill towards Avonmouth, I-Spy the signs for the junction one mile ahead, then half a mile. And on the left, I-Spy the helpful \\\ \\ and \ countdown markers which tell motorists it's 300, then 200, then 100 yards before the exit. Ten points for each thing you spot. And finally, you're right, it's Fats again on the soundtrack! Please note: the wide-angle lens makes vehicles ahead look smaller and more distant than they actually are.
