JAW HARP JOHN

John Fowler Playing the jawharp in the Appalachian style. The instrument here is called a "jaws harp", and is most commonly called a "jews harp". It's a world instrument mostly related to a "mouth Bow" (like a bow you shoot an arrow;the first string instrument). In other parts of the world it's refered to by other names. Like "thrump".

Jaw Harp played by Richard Tipping

Australian poet Richard Tipping plays two tunes on jaw harp: Waltzing Matilda (the national song of Australia) and a Scottish jig to dance to. Recorded as a part of his poetry performances in Germany in 1985, including the city of Wuppertal and its famous university. The jaw harp has a history as old and mysterious as the flute and the drum, appearing in many different places, made of many materials, but with a distinctive sound. The jaw harp is sometimes called the jews harp - an English mishearing of the Scottish saying jaw harp back in the eighteenth century, according to a dictionary of musicology.

(Jaw Harp) Taranta Marranzano Dance (Jew's Harp)

(Jaw Harp, Jew's Harp) I come from Sicily and i live in Milan. In this video, i play the jew's harp, before in black and white with sicilian cap (coppola) and after to colors in a more modern context. Also music changes, before folk (tarantelle) and after tecno or dance (only and exclusively with the marranzano). I didn't forget the Sicily!!!

How to Start Playing the Jaw Harp

Hope the video helps guys. By no means am I an expert on the jaw harp, but I did figure some things out and maybe this video can help. I tried to cover how to hold it as well as how to get three different sounds. The first sound is your basic notes that take little effort. You can change which notes you play by moving your tongue like a lizard, or from the back of your mouth to the front. The second sound is exactly the same as the first except you slightly push air through your mouth. The third sound is made by softly putting your thumb on the piece of metal that is located in the semi-circle. I'd assume this stops it from vibrating. Hope this helps anyone that viewed it, and please leave comments if you have some tips and tricks of your own concerning the jaw harp. - Phil

Refined mouth harp. Its sound is consistent and rich in harmonics. The instrument body is so solid that it does not vibrate when played. The reed allows great movement versatility without generating tension on the jaw. Size: 11cm / 4.3"

Mina Sakai of the Ainu Rebels playing the traditional Ainu instrument, the mukkuri (mouth harp)

Kaha:wi Dance Theatre (KDT) visited Japan in October 2009 to collaborate and share Indigenous movement and song with a young Ainu group, the Ainu Rebels, led by Mina Sakai. This video was taken by the GM of KDT at the welcoming ceremony on October 1, 2009 where Mina delighted audiences with a short performance of how to properly play the mukkuri. The Ainu Rebels then presented all company members with their own mukkuri made of bamboo. Many different cultures around the world have used some form of the mukkuri, which has also been called a Mouth Harp, or more controversially, a "Jew's Harp" (according to Wikipedia sources.) Thank you Ainu Rebels and thank you Mina for sharing this wonderful instrument with us! During the beginning introduction, which is cut short, Mina is saying, you play this instrument if you want to make the sound of nature, for example the sound of the rain, or you play it for your lover.
