Roberto Alagna : death of Edgar (Lucie de Lammermoor)

One of Roberto's best characterization is Edgardo in "Lucia di Lammermoor"... but even more : Edgar in "Lucie de Lammermoor", the French version of Donizetti's masterpiece. These operas are not exactly identical (a different 1st aria for Lucie for example) and Edgar's part is not in the same key as Edgardo... Here is the last part of Edgar's great scene : "... Mais qui faut-il que je pleure ?... Oh, bel ange dont les ailes..." Conductor : Evelino Pido / Stage direction : Patrice Caurier & Moshe Leiser Recorded in Lyon, in 2000.

Roberto Alagna & Béatrice Uria-Monzon (final Act III Carmen)

The intense finale of Act III of Carmen wit a superb Don José performed by Roberto, very manly, the sensual mezzo Béatrice Uria-Monzon and Norah Amsellen disappointing Micaëla (far too much vibrato). Recorded at the Chorégies d'Orange in July 2004. Conductor : Myung-Whun Chung / Stage director : Jerome Savary. Enjoy !!!

2 Tv reports "Lohengrin" with karita Mattila as Elsa

2 French TV reports on Paris-Opera Bastille production of "Lohengrin", in November 1997. Karita Mattila waas the most exquisite Elsa opposite the late wonderful Gosta Wingberg's Lohengrin. Gwyneth Jones was Ortrud... and I just cn not endure her awful voice & vibrato !

Roberto Alagna : scene and Lacrymosa from "Don Carlos"

This is a very rare part of Verdi's "Don Carlos". This opera is the ORIGINAL french version of the future "Don Carlo". The music is not exactly the same between the 2 operas. Tenor voice needed is not exactly the same (due to French specificities) And scenes have disappeared in the italian version. In the 1996 Chatelet's production, the scene after Posa's death with the beautiful Lacrymosa was reintroduced. And it is soooo moving. i remember having cried with my mom in the theatre (all the more so as this part was totally new to us !). Verdi used the orchestral music (rearranged) for his requiem's lacrymosa... Roberto Alagna is really moving, with Jose Van Dam. And I will repeat myself : what a beautiful French he sings ! Conductor : Antonio Pappano / Stage director : Luc Bondy

Karita Mattila is Elsa from "Lohengrin" - Duet with Ortrud

Our beloved Karita rehearses her Duet with Gwyneth Jones' Ortrud. Karita was just lovely in this production... I feel not the same with the now uncontrolled & even awful voice of Jone's (as awful as her character ???) Paris - Opera Bastille - November 1996

Natalie Dessay - Hamlet - "Pâle et blonde" (scene - part 2)

This very peculiar Ophélie's 2nd aria of her scene requires great agility. But Natalie succeeds in using this virtuosity to emphasize Ophélie's dispair... Honestly, I've never heard this aria so well sung and ACTED. You feel for Ophelia and don't care anymore about notes... This is the 2rd part of the scene dedicated to Ophelie's madness & death, in Ambroise Thomas' "Hamlet".. Conductor : Michel Plasson / Stage direction : Nicolas Joël Recorded in June 2000 at Paris Théâtre du Châtelet. SHOULD BE RELEASED ON DVD (announced for quite a while by the Chatelet)

Romeo & Juliette : Alagna sings "Ah, lève-toi soleil !" (ROH 1994)

Music by Charles Gounod Conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras, from the Royal Opera House, 1994 Famous production with Roberto Alagna : Romeo, Leontina Vaduva : Juliette... Enjoy Roberto's performance in what might be his best characterization ever : the best of Romeos to me (and a lot others) with a wonderful diction (I'm French, you can believe me !)

Roberto Alagna "Che gelida manina" (La Boheme) - 1995

Roberto Alagna is just wonderful as Rodolfo in this production of Puccini's "La Bohême", opposite Leontina Vaduva as Mimi. Conductor : James Conlon / Stage director : Jonathan Miller Recorded in December 1995 - Paris, Opera Bastille

Roberto Alagna "Tu ca nun chiagne"

VERY RARE. In July 1992, a young Roberto Alagna sings a napolitan song "Tu ca nun chiagne" as a tribute to his "mentor" Gabriel Dussurget (who founded the Aix-en-Provence festival). I just love this young shy tenor in this video... and you ? + an interview of Roberto speaking of Dussurget & his first Werther in Toulouse (1997).
Natalie Dessay : "Der Hölle Rache"

2nd & most famous aria of the Queen of the Night from Mozart's "Die Zauberflote", sung by Natalie Dessay (pregnant) at Aix-en-Provence Festival in summer 1994. She's most probably one of the most beautiful Queen of the night (to me, the best remains my Lucia Popp) . She does not focus on coloratura but on expression through them. Here, the second section is really amazing... Conductor : William Christie with Les Arts Florisants
