This project is a depth-sensing and projection system that enables interactive multitouch applications on everyday surfaces. Beyond a shoulder-worn system, there is no instrumentation of the user or the environment. Foremost, on such surfaces—without calibration—Wearable Multitouch Interaction provides capabilities similar to those of a mouse or a touchscreen: X and Y locations in 2-D interfaces and whether fingers are "clicked" or hovering, enabling a wide variety of interactions. Reliable operation on the hands, for example, requires buttons to be 2.3 centimeters in diameter. Thus, it is now conceivable that anything one can do on today's mobile devices can be done in the palm of a hand.

The webcam sees these shadows and sends the image to the tracking software which tracks the shadows as they move on the touch surface (paper). All you need is a room with (at least) some light; a dark room will not work. Even room lighting gives the best results. Here's my proof-of-concept HD video of using a hacked Kinect camera for multitouch-like interaction. Written using libfreenect by marcan42 and libTISCH ( tisch.sf.net ) by myself. Play for a few minutes. Specifically see if you have issues firing to the lower right on the right stick, WHILE also moving with the left stick. If you have this issue, you'll find that the right stick often goes "dead" while using the left stick, rendering the game hardly playable. If you have this issue, quit out, then try a MultiTouch tester app like this,and see if you have the issue I showed. The issue should remain until you power the screen off and back on again. Post in the thread linked in the description and in the comments if you have this problem! There seems to be an issue with the Verizon Galaxy Nexus registering multi-touch input while the phone is in landscape held vertically. The problem goes away when you rotate to other positions. It also goes away if you turn the screen off and back on again, until you play another multi touch game.

Medusa is a Microsoft Surface that has been instrumented with 138 proximity sensors. These proximity sensors enable the Surface to sense the users around it, as well as the hands and arms above its display. Not only are these sensors inexpensive and simple to configure, but also they enable an integrated hardware solution, without requiring any markers, cameras, or other sensing devices external to the display platform itself. As Medusa has an awareness of users' locations, it can for example, identify touch points by user, and disambiguate between touches made with left or right hands. This video demonstrates a number of interaction techniques that are now possible using this information. Medusa's additional sensing is meant to enhance the touch sensing of the underlying multi-touch tabletop, rather than to supplant or replace touch-based interaction. The multitouch microscope brings new dimensions into teaching and research. Researchers at the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) and Multitouch Ltd have created a hand and finger gesture controlled microscope. The method is a combination between two technologies: web-based virtual microscopy and a giant size multitouch display. The result is an entirely new way of performing microscopy: by touching a table- or wall-sized screen the user can navigate and zoom within a microscope sample in the same way as in a conventional microscope. Using the touch control it is possible to move from the natural size of the sample to a 1000-fold magnification, at which cells and even subcellular details can be seen.

NEW Mac Tutorial: Multi-Touch Trackpad (Macbook/Macbook Pro), released by Apple Inc. Actually it's not so much the 15-in. MacBook Pro you're going to be swiping -- it's the new multitouch trackpad it features. The trackpad, which represents the biggest change from earlier MacBook Pro models, borrows some of the same hands-on -- maybe I should say fingers-on -- user interface touches that premiered in the iPhone. The change to a multitouch trackpad means you can use the trackpad to perform a number of functions that heretofore required key combos or trackpad taps and clicks. In this video I demonstrate the 3D interaction prototype that I have developed during my Master Thesis at Fraunhofer FIT in Bonn, Germany.
