Murnau's Tabu - Story of the South Seas (Masters of Cinema)

In 1929, FW Murnau (Nosferatu, Faust, Sunrise), one of the greatest of all film directors, invited leading documentarist Robert Flaherty (Nanook of the North, Moana, Man of Aran) to collaborate on a film to be be shot on location in Tahiti, a Polynesian idyll in which Murnau imagined a cast of island actors would provide a new form of authentic drama and offer rare insight into their "primitive" culture. The result of their collaboration was Tabu, a film that depicts the details of indigenous island life to tell a mythical tale that is rich in the universal themes of desire and loss. Subtitled a "Story of the South Seas", Tabu concerns a Tahitian fisherman (played by an islander, Matahi) and his love for a young woman (played by fellow islander Reri, who went on to star on Broadway) whose body has been consecrated to the gods, rendering her tabu as far as mortal men are concerned. The lovers flee their island and its restrictive traditions, but will their love prevail in the "civilised" world? Though Flaherty eventually left the film following a series of artistic and other differences (the film is credited as being "told by" Murnau and Flaherty, but directed by Murnau alone), what their South Seas adventure left behind was an Oscar winning film (the Academy Award went to cinematographer Floyd Crosby for his lyrical vision of island life) that is both poetic and simple in tone. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present, completely uncensored and fully restored, and <b>...</b>

FW Murnau's FAUST (Restored Deluxe Edition DVD Trailer)

www.kino.com Inspired by the German legend and by Goethe's classic tale, Murnau's Faust tells the story of an alchemist (played by Gösta Ekman) who, struggling with his faith amidst a devastating plague, is offered the power to cure and the gift of youth ... in exchange for his soul. As the diabolical Mephisto, Emil Jannings (The Last Laugh) delivers a performance of operatic scale and intensity, by turns charming, comical, and horrific. With this restoration, the spellbinding images produced in Faust, such as the classic shot of a horned, black-winged figure (Mephisto, played by Jannings) looming over a small town, now look more impressive and pristine than ever.

Faust (Murnau 1926): new music (1/2)

An excerpt from FW Murnau's 1926 masterpiece, Faust. This is from the first part of the film; Satan unleashes the plague upon the town where doctor Faust lives. With death all around, some people go into a wild and desperate revelry, others seek the word of the Lord with a sort of holy abandon. Faust learns that all his knowledge is to no avail. He burns his books, including the Bible, but then one very special and sinister tome captures his eye ... The music is from Gustav Holst's The Planets and Hector Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique; both film and music has been edited to fit each other. Please note that the sound has not been compressed before uploading, which means that quiet passages are very quiet, and loud ones are very loud. With youtube's 10 minute limit, I've had to divide the excerpt in two parts, so look out for Faust (Murnau 1926): new music (2/2)!

Nosferatu (Masters of Cinema Trailer) with Original Score

An iconic film of the German expressionist cinema, and one of the most famous of all silent movies, FW Murnau's Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror continues to haunt — and, indeed, terrify — modern audiences with the unshakable power of its images. By teasing a host of occult atmospherics out of dilapidated set-pieces and innocuous real-world locations alike, Murnau captured on celluloid the deeply-rooted elements of a waking nightmare, and launched the signature "Murnau-style" that would change cinema history forever. In this first-ever screen adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, a simple real-estate transaction leads an intrepid businessman deep into the superstitious heart of Transylvania. There he encounters the otherworldly Count Orlok — portrayed by the legendary Max Schreck, in a performance the very backstory of which has spawned its own mythology — who soon after embarks upon a cross-continental voyage to take up residence in a distant new land... and establish his ambiguous dominion. As to whether the count's campaign against the plague-wracked populace erupts from satanic decree, erotic compulsion, or the simple impulse of survival — that remains, perhaps, the greatest mystery of all in this film that's like a blackout... Remade by Werner Herzog in 1979 (and inspiring films as diverse as Abel Ferrara's King of New York and The Addiction, and E. Elias Merhige's Shadow of the Vampire), FW Murnau's surreal 1922 cine-fable remains the original and landmark entry in <b>...</b>

Nosferatu [ FW Murnau ] 1922

Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (translated as Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror; also known as Nosferatu: A Symphony of Terror or simply Nosferatu) is a classic 1922 German Expressionist horror film, directed by FW Murnau, starring Max Schreck as the vampire Count Orlok. The film, shot in 1921 and released in 1922, was an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, with names and other details changed because the studio could not obtain the rights to the novel (for instance, "vampire" became "Nosferatu" and "Count Dracula" became "Count Orlok"). Nosferatu was the first and only production of Prana Film,[1] founded in 1921 by Enrico Dieckmann and Albin Grau. Grau had the idea to shoot a vampire film; the inspiration arose from Grau's war experience: in the winter of 1916, a Serbian farmer told him that his father was a vampire and one of the Undead.[2] Diekmann and Grau gave Henrik Galeen the task to write a screenplay inspired from Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula, despite Prana Film not having obtained the film rights. Galeen was an experienced specialist in Dark romanticism; he had already worked on Der Student von Prag (The Student of Prague) in 1913, and the screenplay for Der Golem, wie er in die Welt kam (The Golem: How He Came into the World) (1920). Galeen set the story in a fictional north German harbour town named Wisborg and changed the character names. He added the idea of the vampire bringing the plague to Wisborg via rats on the ship. Extracts from Wikipedia article: Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens ("Nosferatu, a Symphony of Horror" in German) is a German Expressionist film shot in 1921 by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, and released in 1922. He had wanted to film a version of Bram Stoker's Dracula, but his studio was unable to obtain the rights to the story. Murnau decided instead to film his own version with only slight changes to the story. For instance, "Dracula" became "Nosferatu" and the names of the characters changed, with Count Dracula changed to Count Orlok. The role of the vampire was played by Max Schreck. Other major actors in the film were Gustav von Wangenheim (as Thomas Hutter/Jonathan Harker), Greta Schröder (as Ellen Hutter/Mina M. Harker), and Alexander Granach (as Knock/RM Renfield). Origins of the name: The original meaning of the word nosferatu is difficult to determine. Faust [ FW Murnau ] 1926

Faust (German title: Faust - Eine deutsche Volkssage) is a silent film produced in 1926 by UFA, directed by FW Murnau, starring Gösta Ekman as Faust, Emil Jannings as Mephisto, Camilla Horn as Gretchen/Marguerite, Frida Richard as her mother, Wilhelm Dieterle as her brother and Yvette Guilbert as Marthe Schwerdtlein, her aunt. Murnau's film draws on older traditions of the legendary tale of Faust as well as on Goethe's classic version. UFA wanted Ludwig Berger to direct Faust, as Murnau was engaged with Variety; Murnau pressured the producer and, backed by Jannings, eventually persuaded Erich Pommer to let him direct the movie. Faust was Murnau's last German movie, and directly afterward he moved to the US under contract to William Fox to direct Sunrise (1927); when the film premiered in the Ufa-Palast am Zoo of Berlin, Murnau was already shooting in Hollywood. * Gösta Ekman - Faust * Emil Jannings - Mephisto * Camilla Horn - Gretchen * Frida Richard - Gretchen's mother * William Dieterle - Valentin * Yvette Guilbert - Marthe Schwerdtlein * Eric Barclay - Duke of Parma * Hanna Ralph - Duchess of Parma * Werner Fuetterer - Archangel * Anderhusan von Arteblach - Gretchen's aunt Murnau's Faust was the most complex and expensive production undertaken by UFA. Faust (Murnau, 1926) / DOMESTIC version + FITTING Brock-score (1) / edited by Pieter de Rooij

This video, a special edit prepared and presented by me, Pieter de Rooij, shows the first part of the domestic version of Murnau's Faust in a slightly different way than usual. It's the result of an experiment I did to find a way to combine the 'domestic cut' of Murnau's film Faust with Timothy Brock's brilliant score, written for another version of this film, the so-called 'export version'. Let me explain a little bit further what I've done and how and why I did this. FW Murnau's masterpiece-film 'Faust' was released in 1926 and there are seven known versions of the film. The most well known version is the so-called 'export version' with english titles, that premiered in december 1926 in the USA. That export-version is 10 minutes longer than the newly discovered 'domestic version' a couple of years ago, the domestic version being the original 'German print', the one with German titles that was shown at the time in German cinema theatres. The export print is slightly darker and softer, lacking the detail and clarity of the domestic version. Incidentally, the differences between the export and the domestic version are considerable. There's no difference in terms of the overall structure of scenes and storyline, but the pacing and lengths of scenes often vary greatly and there are often striking differences in the order and in the composition of shots, the domestic version certainly being the superior of the two. Timothy Brock's orchestral score, written for the Faust <b>...</b>

There are still a few moments where the pitch will waver a bit, but it's a huge improvement over the minute+ audio/video discrepancy it had by the end of the original file I had.
