The making of a #1 Hit. Muscle Shoals Sound Studio w/ The Swampers, Mary McGregor Part I

Note: Don't forget to see Part II, just click on my username and it'll be there. Here is a rare glimpse into a session at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio during a 1970's recording session that produced Mary McGregor's #1 hit song "Torn Between Two Lovers." Pete Carr, Lead Guitar for Muscle Shoals Sound says: "Peter Yarrow, who heard of us from Paul Simon, brought in a young lady named Mary McGregor which he and our piano player Barry Becket were to produce. Peter narates the video and we studio guys go through our usual setup, tuning, working out the song and recording etc. You can probably tell we were nervous with cameras on us the whole time. It is a little intimadating when you are trying to work and don't want to make a fool out of yourself. It all turned out very well I thought. I good one look in the studio where we made hundreds of records but just a small look at the varied styles of music we could do from week to week."

Creating the Muscle Shoals sound

In 1969, four Alabama studio musicians left the storied Fame Recording Studios to create the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio. Their first client was Cher, who even named her album "3614 Jackson Highway" -- the address of the studio. In this clip, drummer Roger Hawkins and bassist David Hood describe the early days of a studio that would go on to become a 1970s icon.

The Decoys promotional video - Muscle Shoals musicians!

The Decoys are a five-man powerhouse rock n' roll band, featuring five of the most seasoned musicians anywhere. David Hood, bass guitarist, was a member of the world famous Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, better known as "The Swampers", made famous in the song "Sweet Home Alabama". David has played on a list of albums that reads like a who's who of the music industry, such as Aretha Franklin, Bob Seger, Rod Stewart, The Staple Singers, Paul Simon, Traffic, and many more. David was recently inducted, along with the rest of "the swampers", into the Musicians Hall of Fame in Nashville,Tn. Congrats, and well deserved. SoLost: The Stones, The Keys & Noel's Midnight Muscle Shoals Music Lesson

Noel Webster is one elusive cat. The man operates Muscle Shoals Sound in Sheffield, Alabama—a recording studio with a past as rich as some of the greatest studios in rock-n-roll history. "Hyperbole," you ask? Perhaps. Perhaps, that is, if an act named the Rolling Stones doesn't ring a bell. And you've never heard of Paul Simon. Or Bob Seger. Or Aretha Franklin. Or Rod Stewart. Or Lynyrd Skynyrd. Or....get our drift? (Did we mention last year's Grammy-gobbling insta-classic "Brothers" from The Black Keys?) Yep. All recorded classic titles there in a rickety old building emblazoned with the address: 3614 Jackson Highway. But back to Noel. He owns the place. Brought it back to life, in fact, after it sat defunct for 20 years. He knows the history. He's a master of great analog recordings and the gear that can bring it to life: a kind of musical archeologist who's not only revived the place, but brought back all the equipment to help Muscle Shoals Sound reclaim its original, irreproducible sound. But that doesn't mean he's easy to get on camera. Sure he'll give you a tour (likely at some bizarre hour of the night), but when the camera comes out, he's got a way of disappearing. At about 1 am Saturday morning, Noel the night owl finally, fitfully agreed to sit down with SoLost. Was it worth it? Absolutely. Watch and see why. Muscle Shoals Horns: Keep On Playin' That Funky Music

From 1977 on Ariola-America, this is a magnificent album that I wouldn't wanna live without. It is also a testament to the fantastic musicians that worked atMuscle Shoals Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The studio was formed in 1969 by musicians Barry Beckett (keyboards, producer of this LP), Roger Hawkins (drums, also on this LP), Jimmy Johnson (guitar) and David Hood (bass, plays on this LP) and that's where such legendary and groundbreaking artists as Aretha Franklin, Millie Jackson, Joe Simon, Wilson Pickett, The Rolling Stones, Paul Simon and the Staple Singers recorded some of their finest work. The Muscle Shoals horns were of course the horn section of the Muscle Shoals Studio and consisted of: Harrison Calloway: Trumpet, Trombone, Keyboards, Vocals Ronnie Eades: Baritone Sax Harvey Thompson: Soprano, Alto and Tenor Sax Muscle Shoals Horns first recorded in their own right for Bang Records, in 1976, another LP well worth seeking out called "Born To Get Down". From that album, the group had a major hit with "Born To Get Down (Born To Mess Around)" which hit #8 on Billboard's R&B Singles Charts in early 1976. On that record, Charles Rose was also part of the official line-up. When preparing to write this "descriptive text" I found that it was a near impossible task, as all the gentlemen involved have done an incredible amount of outstanding work for over 5 decades and I'm glad to see that many of them are still going strong.
