Tel Aviv Art Museum's popular new wing

www.israel.org Israeli artworks get their moment in the spotlight thanks to the museum's recently opened $55 million addition. Thousands of people from several countries have come to see the new $55 million addition to the Tel Aviv Art Museum (http since it opened in November 2011. "Everything started with the vision of the late Mordechai Omer, who was the chief curator and the director of the museum," says Shuli Kislev, acting director of the museum. "He really thought that Israeli art -- which was mainly in our storage, because we didn't have enough space in the main building -- should be exhibited in large beautiful galleries." Social and business entrepreneur Jay M. Schultz adds, "The new museum is really a major step forward to showing Israel on an international level." Do Museums Still Matter?

Increasingly, our world is filled with tablets, smart phones and lap tops. We move at a pace that would have been unimaginable only a few decades ago. Steven Conn's book "Do Museums Still Need Objects" uses museums as a lens to explore 21st century challenges around public space and civic identity. How have globalization, technology and progress influenced our relationship with the museum? Steven Conn joins a panel of world-renowned experts to debate the importance of having a public space to be among tangible artifacts which connect us to the past.

Science, Museums, And College-Age Adults

A short film I made for my Science Communication class @ UW. I'm interested in informal science education, particularly at museums, so I thought this would be a fun and informative project. I asked three questions: 1) What's one science fact or idea that fascinates you? 2) What would your ideal science museum be like? 3) How would you describe your last visit to a science museum? For me, what this film demonstrates is that young adults - a difficult demographic for science museums - *are* interested in science. There are clearly scientific subjects which capture their imagination - but it's somehow not being translated into an experience they can appreciate. They have ideas for what would improve their experience - such as more truly hands-on activities (instead of just button-pushing, as Hein and others have written). Otherwise, we're going to lose - or, continue losing - an amazing demographic with so much potential for learning science and its culture, and for creating a more scientifically literate - and, I believe, somewhat Renaissance - society. **You can find my science and science-education blog at realcleverscience.tumblr.com The background song - "Turning," by Vitaliy Baldych - is from creative-commons: www.jamendo.com (And my apologies for the low quality; due to technical difficulties, I had to shoot this on a flipcam last minute!) Ps And no offense to the Museum of Glass! I've actually heard that it's a very enjoyable museum!

Collecting Ancient Central America:: Museums, Explorers, & Archaeologists in Pursuit of the Past

Starting in the late 19th century, travelers, amateur scientists, businessmen, politicians, and later, professional archaeologists returned from Central America with never-before-seen artifacts. Many of these ceramic, stone, gold, and jade objects ended up in museums and many entered private collections. Regardless of their final destination, these early collections have helped, and continue to help, define a unique and unparalleled ancient history of Central America. This symposium delves into this history by looking at both early antiquarians and more recent scholarly approaches to collecting and understanding the past. It focuses on individuals, institutions, and the social and political factors that have impacted the collecting of objects from Belize and Guatemala in the north, down to Panama in the south. By extension, this conversation is also about understanding the history of archaeology, the history of museum building, and how we construct the past. Featured scholars include Dr. John Hoopes (University of Kansas), Dr. Francisco Corrales (National Museum of Costa Rica), Dr. Rosemary Joyce (University of California, Berkeley), Luis Sánchez (Department of Environmental Management, Costa Rican Institute of Electricity), Dr. James Snead (California State University Northridge), Dr. Elin Danien (University of Pennsylvania), and Dr. Alexander Benitez (George Mason University).

A Woman's Touch: The National Museum of Women in the Arts

The National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC offers the single most important collection of art by women in the world. The museum provides an astonishing survey of women artists representing every major artistic period from 16th-century Dutch and Flemish still lifes to 20th-century abstract expressionism to postmodern art. This GREAT MUSEUMS special reflects on everything from how women artists have been overshadowed in art history to feminism and the French Revolution to the memorable feminine artistic expressions of the late 19th century. The good news is that due to shining stars like the National Museum of Women in the Arts women artists in the 20th century are anonymous no more! The program integrates themes of history and diversity with art the great common denominator.

Museu De La Xocolata (Museum of Chocolate) - Barcelona (Spain) (HD)

Museu de la Xocolata (Catalan for "Museum of Chocolate") is a museum in Barcelona, Spain, owned by the Gremi de Pastisseria de Barcelona (the city pastry-makers' guild). The museum opened in 2000, at Carrer Comerç 36, in El Born, Ciutat Vella, on the ground level of an old barracks. Many of the displays are chocolate sculptures, including various well-known Barcelona buildings, and illustrations from various stories. The chocolate museum Museu de la Xocolata shows the history of chocolate in Europe: its origins, how it got to us and how it was traded as an element between myth and reality, between medicine and food or as an aphrodisiac. It also shows the manufacturing of chocolate, from the cocoa bean up to industrial production processes. The chocolate museum is one of the smaller museums in Barcelona. But none of the other museums will tickle your senses as much as this one. The smell of chocolate is all over the place, teasing your appetite, so the piece of chocolate that you receive at the entrance may not last for long. If you bring your kids with you on your trip to Barcelona, this museum will probably become their favourite.
