Music Matters - Bernard Butler

Like us on Facebook! www.whymusicmatters.org See what your friends like! Written by: Lee Gingold and Bernard Butler Directed by: Lee Gingold, Daren Turner, Giles Dill. Character Designs by: Darren Turner Original Score: Bernard Butler This is Bernard Butler he played lead guitar for Suede McAlmot and Butler. Now he produces and plays on albums for people like Burt Janich, Black Kids, Duffa, The Libertines, and Kate Nash. When I was a kid I saw a picture of my dad with a big quiff and shades just like Roy Orbison. I have to admit that I got a bit confused and for a while I actually wondered if my Dad was Roy Orbison. On the record sleeve he had a big red guitar and I loved the way it looked. The way he looked playing it. And when I was a teenager I saw Johnny Marr playing a cherry red Gibson 355 for the Smiths. I feel in love with the sound it made. I guess that's why I've always had such a big thing for cherry red Gibsons and the people who play them... Chuck Berry, Keith Richards... All I wanted to do if I could be a guitar player was play my own cherry red Gibson and make records like the people I loved. I'm lucky that I get to do that everyday now. Sometimes I'm playing guitar...and sometimes I'm recording other people. I can even let people play my 355 when I record them.j One of the strangest things that happened to me was playing on a Roy Orbinson song for a film soundtrack...it was Roy's voice recorded before he died and I played the guitar bit over the top. Music Matters - Kate Bush

Like us on Facebook! whymusicmatters.org See what your friends like! Film by Elliot Dear / Winter Champion Once there was a girl who created her own magical worlds...By 11, she could compose her own songs, by her teens she had over 50 of them. Kate's demo recordings were heard by Pink Floyd guitarist Dave Gilmour. As a result, she signed a record deal aged 16. When she appeared in 2978. Wuthering Heights was like nothing else anyone had ever seen, or heard before. Kate performed with vibrancy and passion. She was spectacular. "I think everyone is emotional. A lot of people are afraid of being so. They feel that it's vulnerable. I feel that it's the key to everything." Kate has disappeared to family life after a career that has spanned four decades. It won't be the last we will hear from her...Her work continues to have influence on a new generation of female performers: PJ Harvey, Lady Hawke, Goldfrapp, Tori Amos, Florence and The Machine Kate Bush remains enigmatic, truthful and wedded to her art. Music allowed her to share her emotions and gave a voice to her dreams. And that's Why Music Matters.

Whether we're making animated films, music videos or educational shorts -- it all comes down to telling a good, entertaining story. And music is the most powerful tool we've got. In all our work we aim to highlight the hand of the artist and that's what Music Matters is all about. Exposing the blood, sweat and tears that goes into creating any art, be it music or image. Why an "A" is not enough

A musical demonstration of what is wrong with education in the United States today. How just an A, is not good enough. How teaching to pass the government's test is dumbing down America. The Conductor gets it and he has a great way of explaining his point. Watch, listen and consider his message!

We want to give fans a hand to navigate the huge variety of music available to them, particularly online. The Music Matters mark signifies the support of musicians and their craft, and will be carried by legitimate music services and retailers. It will give music fans aa chance to make the ethical choice. If you think Music Matters look for MM mark on all supporting music sites.

Words from the filmmaker: "I chose to tell the story of Sigur Rós because I had a friend in university who kissed a girl on an A-road over-pass in the rain one night, and he said it was so incredibly emotional he imagined a movie camera spinning around them both while the sparkling rain fell in slow motion and Sigur Rós played. I found that funny and wanted to show how people match their surroundings and experiences with music, and vice versa."

Music Matters - The Jam

Like us on Facebook! whymusicmatters.org See what your friends like! Film by Show & Tell In 1958 Paul Weller was born. One of the most influential figures in British rock, Paul Weller and his friends were at the forefront of 70's Mod revival taking influences form Small Faces, The Who, The Beatles. The Jam were formed in 1976 alongside punk bands like The Clash and Sex Pistols. The Jam dressed in sharp, clean-cut suits with their melodic pop songs and Mod image The Jam became British superstars. Renowned for being passionate in his beliefs Weller felt conflicted by their success. Where punk was blunt, anarchist and rejected musical refinement, Weller's songs were energetic, bracing explorations of modern English life. A social and political reaction to Thatcher's Britain. Weller was inspired by influences as diverse as rhythm and blues, beat music and soul. It was this hunger for experimentation that would eventually lead him to believe he had come as far as he could with the band. At the height of their popularity The Jam split up. An unstoppable music force, Weller was free to experiment. He spent the next three decades continuing to push boundaries. From The Style Council to his incredible solo years. To top all of this, The Jam continues to inspire future generations. And that's why Music Matters.

Florence and The Machine on Janis Joplin

Like us on Facebook! tellus.whymusicmatters.org See what your friends like! Florence and The Maching on Janis Joplin: I learnt about Janis Joplin from an anthology of female blues singers. Janis was a fascinating character who bridged the gap between the psychedelic blues and soul scenes. She is so vulnerable, self-conscious, and full of suffering. She tore herself apart yet on stage she was totally different. She was so unrestrained, so free, so raw, and she wasn't afraid to wail. Her connection with the audience was important. It seems to me the suffering and intensity of her performance go hand in hand. There was always a sense of longing of searching for something. I think she really sums up the idea that soul is about putting your pain into something beautiful. And that's why she's so important to me and that's why Music Matters.
