Taxi driver Barbaro picks up the maestro, 85-year-old Pio Leiva, one of the stars of "Buena Vista Social Club," who is late for a radio show. On the ride over, the two decide to put together a band with some of the best and most acclaimed young artists living in Cuba today. The film documents the new band searching for their own voice, through the rehearsal and recording of classic Cuban songs, culminating in a huge concert in Tokyo where The Sons of Cuba is finally born.

Available at www.CubaCollectibles.com Born Maria Antonieta Pons in Havana, Cuba, on June 11, 1922, she was discovered by the Mexican film producer, Juan Orol, who became her ... all » first husband. Her debut was in the made-in-Cuba film "Siboney" (1938). Soon she became a famous star participating in 53 more films until her retirement in 1965. She was one of the stars that helped to define the "rumbera films" genre. Characteristic of this genre are melodramatic stories about seductresses, fallen women and especially the musical numbers they performed in cabaret scenes. Pons was one of the stars that with her extravagant costumes and wild rumba dancing earned the nickname "Tropical Queens" and created a style that lasted into the 50s. Her second husband was Ramon Pereda who produced and directed some of her films. This is a compilation of 40 musical numbers (1942-1959) and is an homage to the memory of this great star of Spanish language films. urviving on the dance floor Many Cuban exiles live in New York City and the nearby Latino neighborhoods in New Jersey. Some of them are the central characters in "Dame la mano". All week long, they look forward to Sunday night, when they can let themselves go on the worn-out dance floor of a dance club called "La Esquina Habanera." This is the only place in the US where the authentic rumba is celebrated. Cuba connoisseurs describe it as "one of America's best kept secrets". The characters know the secret of this club, which is just an ordinary diner on weekdays. The rumba is the least well-known yet the most sensual and original form of Cuban music and dance. When the Spanish rulers abolished slavery in the mid-19th century, the true Afro-Cuban rumba that we know today emerged: its rhythmic and harmonic phrases refer to ancient African songs and prayers, mixed with Spanish musical influences. Rumba as a necessity For Cubans dancing is one of life's necessities, like walking, eating, making love and breathing. This inner drive creates a strong zest for life. Dancing means much more than just 'a night out' --for the characters in this film it's their oxygen. It's amazing how full of vitality they are and how music and dance helps them forget their day-to-day worries and even seems to ward off fate. En 1996, el compositor, productor y guitarrista Ry Cooder viajó hasta los Estudios Egrem, en La Habana, interesado en cierta música con ritmos provenientes de África. Si bien su búsqueda resultó infructuosa, esto no le impidió conocer a un grupo de legendarios músicos cubanos, que habían pasado prácticamente al olvido, cuyas edades fluctuaban entre los 60 y 80 años. El resultado fue Buena Vista Social Club, un álbum ganador de un Grammy cuyo éxito fue aclamado internacionalmente. Filmado en 1998, este documental registra el regreso de Cooder a Cuba, ocasión en la que se reúne con el vocalista Ibrahim Ferrer y el resto de los músicos con la intención de grabar un nuevo álbum. El director de cine Wim Wenders, junto a un reducido grupo de filmación, observó a los músicos en el estudio y rastreó sus vidas en La Habana. Así se dio inicio a este documental, que registra el viaje de los ancianos desde su país natal hasta la ciudad de Ámsterdam -donde ofrecieron dos conciertos-, y que finaliza en Nueva York, con una presentación en el Carnegie Hall.
