Chinese classical music - Liu Fang guzheng solo 劉芳古箏獨奏《廣陵散》
This is a famous ancient guqin masterpiece called "Guangling San" transcribed by guzheng master Wang Changyuan for guzheng solo. Liu Fang performed this piece during the concert at City Theater of Paris on May 8, 2006. The original guqin solo was composed by the renowned scholar and guqin master, Ji Kang, one of the "seven gentlemen in the bamboo forest" in the Wei period (3rd century). www.liufangmusic.net Guzheng (where "Gu" and "Zheng" stand for "ancient" and "zither" or "harp") is one of the most popular traditional instruments from China. It's beautiful and mellow sounds are very attractive. Pipa soloist Liu Fang also has also an excellent command of guzheng playing, particularly for classical styles, as evidenced in this piece. According to history, the composer, Ji Kang, who refused to serve the tyrant emperor Sima, was persecuted and finally killed by the order of the Emperor. Liu Fang's unique style of interpretation of this ancient classical piece has been highly acclaimed internationally. This current video clip is an extract of 6 minutes. The complete version is about 11 minutes and can be found in www.myspace.com This is one of the most famous master pieces from the traditional pipa repertoire, know as "wu qu" (martial style) as constrast to "wen qu" (civil style or lyrical style). A typical example of the latter is 飛花點翠, see www.youtube.com The following text is from the concert program note: The King Chu doffs his Armour (Chinese classical tradition): This masterpiece of pipa is a musical description of a tragic historical event: the defeat of King Xiang Yu who thought himself invincible. During the war which followed the foundation of the Han Empire (202 BC - 220 AD), Xiang Yu suffered a fatal defeat. The pipa depicts the scene of the battle, noises of the soldiers' flight, and the indescribable feeling of being defeated. The performance of this piece demands a whole range of complex techniques and virtuosity, with speed, precision and restraint.
