Music from track 2 of a 1974 Muzak LP known to collectors as the "Blue Album", demonstrating the concept of Stimulus Progression. As a predecessor of Environmental Music, Stimulus Progression was typically heard as background music in supermarkets, departments stores and offices from the 1940's to the 1970's. Stimulus Progression was broadcast in 15 minute blocks, alternating between 15 minutes of music and 15 minutes of silence. Each quarter-hour program consists of 6 tracks, beginning with one of low level stimulus (ie stimulus level 1 of 6) and ends with a tune of more upbeat instrumentation (ie stimulus level 6 of 6). The average stimulus level for a quarter-hour block depends on the time of day. This in the second track in a 15 minute block of 6 songs.

Elevator music (also known as muzak, piped music, weather music, or lift music) refers to instrumental arrangements of popular music designed for playing in shopping malls, grocery stores, department stores, telephone systems (while the caller is on hold), cruise ships, airports, doctors' and dentists' offices, and elevators. The term is also frequently applied as a generic term for any form of easy listening, smooth jazz, or middle of the road music, or to the type of recordings commonly heard on "beautiful music" radio stations. The Muzak Holdings Corporation is a major supplier of business background music, and was the best known such supplier for years. Since 1997 Muzak has used original artists for its music source, except on the Environmental channel. Elevator music is typically set to a very simple melody, so that it can be unobtrusively looped back to the beginning. In a mall or shopping center, elevator music of a specific type has been found to have a psychological effect: slower, more relaxed music tends to make people slow down and browse longer.[citation needed] Elevator music may also be preferred over broadcast radio stations due to the lack of lyrics and commercial interruptions. This style of music is sometimes used to comedic effect in mass media such as film, where intense or dramatic scenes may be interrupted or interspersed with such anodyne music while characters use an elevator

A very short video showcasing the Muzak equipment in my garage. The speakers you'll see are both Muzak-branded Quam C8M10 8" speakers with U187 transformers. Mounting methods are described. The wall baffle is tapped at 1 watt, and the ceiling speaker is tapped at 4 watts because it has a much larger area to cover than the wall baffle speaker. I didn't mention how this is operated, but in short, the audio signal passes from a standard desktop computer (the "music computer", as it's called, because this particular computer is used to play overhead music and nothing more) through a Bose Freespace controller. The Bose controller is routed through a TOA A-506A amp, which controls the Bose 32's in the ceiling in my room. The audio signal from the TOA amp is routed out the "Booster Out" RCA jack on the rear of the amp into the Paso DMA2120 amplifier that powers the zone you see in this video. The music is actually controlled in a very nifty way by a special software program on the computer called RadioBoss. All I have to do is set a schedule, and the music and volume leveling changes throughout the day. Volume dayparts are set at 8 am, 12 noon, 2 pm, 6 pm, 8 pm, and 12 midnight. Music dayparts are set at 12 noon, 6 pm, 8 pm, and 3 am on weekdays and at various times on the weekends. The music schedule is something like this: WEEKDAYS: 8 am - My own version of Muzak's FM1 12 noon - My own version of Muzak's FM1 (a reschedule that reshuffles the playlist and keeps things "fresh <b>...</b>
