Suu Kyi 'offered' Myanmar government post.mpg
An official from Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party has told Al Jazeera the Nobel Peace laureate has been offered a senior position in the Myanmar government. It's one year since the democracy campaigner was released from house arrest and she's now being courted by some of the same politicians who ordered her detained. Al Jazeera's Wayne Hay reports from Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Increase in tourists gives Myanmar locals hope
Myanmar is still considered to be one of the most politically isolated countries in the world, but there are signs that life is improving for some. The government's recent overtures to political dissidents are encouraging others to have cautious optimism. U Pwe Ba Swe, a taxi driver in Yangon, said he is seeing more tourists arriving, who in turn provide new opportunities and sources of income. As a taxi driver, he manages to take home around $13 a day, which works out to about three times the average income for people in Myanmar. It is enough to put his three children through university. Al Jazeera's special correspondent reports undercover from Yangon.

Myanmar frees some political prisoners
www.euronews.net Myanmar started releasing political prisoners on Wednesday as part of an amnesty announced by the government. Reports say between 150 and 300 'prisoners of conscience' have been freed. Authorities have yet to give the exact figure. Pro-democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi welcomed the move. She was released from 15 years of house arrest last November and has since held talks with the government. There are conflicting reports as to whether dissident Buddhist monk Shin Gambira is also among those to go free from jail.

Myanmar regime 'to free 6300 prisoners'
www.euronews.net Myanmar is set to free more than 6300 detainees, state television reported on Wednesday. The report failed to specify if any of the 6359 people to be freed are political prisoners. On Tuesday, a new government-created human rights body urged the release of "prisoners of conscience". The country formerly known as Burma is subject to Western sanctions. The main reasons are human rights abuses and its detention of pro-democracy activists.
