He is best-remembered for his ability to transform European classical music into pop music. His 1971 arrangement of Mozart's Symphony No. 40 recorded with the Manuel de Falla orchestra, reached the top spot in the Dutch charts and scored a top 10 hit in several other European countries. The Hawaii Five-O theme song is another legacy of the famous series. The song was composed by Morton Stevens, who also composed numerous episode scores. The song has been covered by The Ventures. It is particularly popular with college and high school marching bands, especially at the University of Hawaii, where it has become the unofficial fight song. Hawaii Five-O is an American television series produced by CBS Productions. Airing for 12 seasons from 1968 to 1980, the show featured a fictional Hawaiian State Police force and an elite unit run by Detective Steve McGarrett. "The Washington Post" is a patriotic march composed by John Philip Sousa in 1889. Since then, it has remained as one of his most popular marches throughout the United States and many countries abroad. We're showing scenery photos of the US and a few soldiers. In 1889 owners of The Washington Post newspaper requested that John Philip Sousa, the leader of the United States Marine Corps Band, compose a march for the newspaper's essay contest awards ceremony. Sousa obliged; "The Washington Post March" was introduced at the ceremony on June 15, 1889, and it became quite popular.[1] It led to a British journalist dubbing Sousa "The March King." We'll hear the voices of Tenor Plácido Domingo and Soprano Ghena Dimitrova singing in the triumphant finale of Turandot, by Italian composer Giacomo Puccini. Giacomo Puccini (1858--1924) was an Italian composer whose operas, including La Bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly and Turandot, are among the most frequently performed in the standard repertoire. Some of his arias, such as "O Mio Babbino Caro" from Gianni fsSchicchi, "Che Gelida Manina" from La Bohème, and "Nessun Dorma" from Turandot, have become part of popular culture. Plácido Domingo (1941), is a Spanish tenor and conductor known for his versatile and strong voice, possessing a ringing and dramatic tone throughout its range. Ghena Dimitrova (1941--2005) was a Bulgarian operatic soprano. Her voice was known for its power and extension used in operatic roles such as Turandot in a career spanning four decades. Turandot is an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini, set to a libretto in Italian by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni. Turandot was unfinished at the time of Puccini's death and was later completed by Franco Alfano. Turandot is a Persian word and name meaning "the daughter of Turan", Turan being a region of Central Asia which used to be part of the Persian Empire. This story had been circulating through the internet. It speaks of a soldier who used a deck of ordinary playing cards as an aid to prayer and meditation. This story dates at least to 1788. The popular song deck of cards (sometimes known as "A Soldier's Prayer Book") was writen in 1948 by "T." Texas Tyler and was recorded by , among others, Tex Ritter in 1948. "The Deck of Cards" is a recitative that was popularized in both the country and popular music fields, first during the late 1940s. This religious, touching tale of a young American soldier arrested and charged with playing cards during a church service first became a hit in the US in 1948. Though Tyler wrote the spoken-word piece, the earliest known reference is to be found in an account/common-place book belonging to Mary Bacon, a farmer's wife, dated 20 April 1762. The story of the soldier can be found in full in Mary Bacon's World. A farmer's wife in eighteenth-century Hampshire, published by Threshhold Press (2010). The folk story was later recorded in a piece of 19th century British literature called "The Soldier's Almanack, Bible And Prayer Book" Woodward Maurice Ritter (1905--1974), better known as Tex Ritter, was an American Country Music singer and movie actor popular from the mid-1930s into the 1960s, and the father of actor John Ritter. Gold and Silver Waltz Op. 79 played by André Rieu and his Johann Strauss Orchestra. Lehár was born in the northern part of Komárom, Kingdom of Hungary, Austria-Hungary (now Komárno, Slovakia), the eldest son of a bandmaster in the Infantry Regiment No. 50 of the Austro-Hungarian Army. Franz studied violin and composition at the Prague Conservatory, where his violin teacher was Antonín Bennewitz, but was advised by Antonín Dvořák to focus on composing music. After graduation in 1899 he joined his father's band in Vienna, as assistant bandmaster. In 1902 he became conductor at the historic Vienna Theater an der Wien, where his first opera Wiener Frauen was performed in November of that year. He is most famous for his operettas -- the most successful of which is The Merry Widow (Die lustige Witwe) -- but he also wrote sonatas, symphonic poems, marches, and a number of waltzes (the most popular being Gold und Silber, composed for Princess Pauline von Metternich's "Gold and Silver" Ball, January 1902), some of which were drawn from his famous operettas. Jimmy Sturr is a polka musician, trumpeter/clarinetist/saxophonist and leader of Jimmy Sturr & His Orchestra. His recordings have won 18 out of the 24 Grammy Awards given for Best Polka Album. Sturr's orchestra is on the Top Ten List of the All-Time Grammy Awards, and has acquired more Grammy nominations than anyone in the history of musical polka awards. His band is arguably the most popular polka band in America, and have their own TV show on the RFD-TV network, a network devoted to rural America. A beautiful melody complimented by beautiful paintings. Ketelbey's Sanctuary of My Heart with awesome paintings by Robert Duncan of Utah, USA. THE COMPOSER: Albert W. Ketèlbey was born in Alma Street in the Lozells area of Birmingham, England, the son of George Ketelbey (written with no accent), and Sarah Aston. At the age of eleven he wrote a piano sonata that won praise from Edward Elgar. Ketèlbey attended the Trinity College of Music in London, where he showed his talent for playing various orchestral instruments reflected in the masterfully colourful orchestration, especially of oriental inspiration, that became his trademark. At Trinity he beat Gustav Holst in competition for a musical scholarship. He used the pseudonyms Raoul Clifford and Anton Vodorinski for some of his earlier works (some reference books mistakenly give Vodorinski as his true name and Ketèlbey as the pseudonym). His name is frequently misspelt Ketelby. THE ARTIST: Robert Duncan was born in Utah and began painting at age eleven. He spent summers as a boy on his grandparents' ranch in Wyoming where his grandmother gave him his first set of oil paints. It was there that he grew to love the country, the open spaces, and the rural lifestyle. Robert has painted professionally for about 25 years. He studied at the University of Utah and worked as a commercial artist before his full-time dedication to the fine art of the American West. She worked as a dancer in Spain, a secretary in England, and a stewardess on a Union-Castle Line ship, before singing with the Teddy Foster orchestra, with whom she toured the UK and America. "La Paloma" is a popular song, having been produced and reinterpreted in diverse cultures, settings, arrangements, and recordings over the last 150 years. The song was composed and written by Spanish composer Sebastián Iradier (later Yradier) after he visited Cuba in 1861. Iradier may have composed "La Paloma" around 1863, just two years before he died in Spain in obscurity, never to learn how popular his song would become. A beautiful melody by Albert W. Ketèlbey. Albert W. Ketèlbey was born in Alma Street in the Lozells area of Birmingham, England, the son of George Ketelbey (written with no accent), and Sarah Aston. At the age of eleven he wrote a piano sonata that won praise from Edward Elgar. Ketèlbey attended the Trinity College of Music in London, where he showed his talent for playing various orchestral instruments reflected in the masterfully colourful orchestration, especially of oriental inspiration, that became his trademark. At Trinity he beat Gustav Holst in competition for a musical scholarship.
